Model Code Breakdown

Had a member ask the question what does the code mean...

Thought I could let everyone know.

On a mazda3, this is how the codes work.

example D4SS85 GA00

D - Mazda3
4 - either 4 or 5 tells how many doors (sedan vs sport)
S - either X, S or T indicates the model GX, GS or GT
S - either S or D indicates engine size S=2.0L & D=2.3L
8 - either 5 or 8 indicates transmission 5=5 speed manual, 8=automatic with sport shift
5 - indicates model year 5=2005

GA00 - indicates package (ie power package, sport package, air conditioning, convenience package, GFX etc....

Where is the colour code?

Colour code is after the model code 22v, A4D, 27B.... etc.

Where on the car would I find the "Model Code" ?

same place you'd find the correct pressures for the tires, the driver's side door jamb

EDIT: just came back from my car and it's not there :P but i do recall seeing it on the bill of sale

Actually, you won't find the model code on the car, it is a Mazda thing and used more by the dealerships/factory and is only on the invoice, price list, and it should definately be on your bill of sale.

ok, then, If I am Joe Smoe looking at a used Mazda 3 on a dealer's lot or in the Auto trader, what is the easiest way and most definitive way to tell if a Mazda 3 is a GT or not?

I have an '06 GT but say Joe Smoe is looking at an '04/05.

any GFX features (the body coloured grille is a good one although the GT sans GFX will have a different one but MOST GTs are GT+GFX)

Thanks for the offer "The Biz". I may just send you an email at one point or another as I have a friend looking at used 04/05's after taking ours for an afternoon. To be honest I'm not sure just how committed he is.

hey man, i have the 2008 hatchback. i dont remember reading the code but last time i lifted my hood, there was a sticker on the top left saying my engine was the 2.0liter. Isnt that vastly impossible? i have the hatchback in 4speed auto, didnt they ONLY come in 2.3???
