As a fairly new Canadian, I was looking for any advise on good campsites in the Algonquin area.

I have tried googling it, but I am looking for a campsite that has a little in the way of modern conveniences as possible. i.e. no hydro, no showers, no stores, nothing.....

I want this be as much like \"Survivor Man\" as possible. :P

Ideally I want to do some portaging as well.....

Long shot but I just wandered if anyone here had done something like this.....?

Thanks,

If you want to spend about 3 days to a week I would recommend a canoe trip south through Smoke Lake at access point 6. The portages are faily short and the water is very calm after smoke lake. This is a good time to go cause it is not that busy after this weeken. The water is water is probaly still worm enough to swim and there won\'t be many black flies and mosquitos.

My recommendation is that you should order an Algonquin Park Canoe mape and plan your route first. You can go .HERE (http://www.portagestore.com/sect/themap.htm) to get some sample canoe routes, but definitely you will need the map to find out were the sites and portage routes are.

Another thing to note is to make sure you travel as light as possible, with all you equipment and food it gets very heavy when portaging up hills.

I am sure you will like the backcountry camping. Once you try it you will never want to go to the drive in sites anymore.

if you REALLY wanna rough it go to Temagami.. this is the route we did in 2004

http://xs44.xs.to/pics/05355/temagami.jpg

it\'s about 75km - 4 day trip.. not tooo many portages but be aware that some routes may not be accessible (overgrown, low/high water levels, etc) we had to bushwack at one point b/c the portage entry was all grown over.. also there are no potty\'s.. u dig a hole and squat :)

it was a wicked trip.. we had 13 of us in 6 canoes. one day the wind was so strong we got all 6 boats together and made a sail out of the tent tarp and we sailed like crazy mofos... covered the distance in no time.

EDIT: if i were you i would give killarney a shot first - breathtaking views.. a great day hike to silver peak.. and not completely deserted park :) if you wnat pix from killarney or temagami PM me..

If you want a real challenge then you can try canoeing from Access Point 11 (Lake Opeongo) all the way to the North Arm of Opeongo. My buddy and I did a route starting from Opeongo->Big Trout Lake (Night#1) ->Otterslide Lake (Night#2)-> Happy Isle Lake (Night#3)-> Lake Opeongo (night#4). Thats the route that we took 2 years ago. Beware tho, its a lot of work paddling the entire Lake Opeongo...we were a little crazy to do it during a day where there were white caps too while other people took a water taxi to the north arm. Also Big Trout can get pretty choppy as well but the week that we went the weather wasn\'t the nicest. I have more routes drawn up from previous trips so if you have trouble deciding on a route, I could dig the maps up.

This statement is so true. I cannot go back to \"car camping\" even with my 3 beside me.:p

Ah yes the \"luxury\" camping with the air matress! I do love taht kind of camping... but I wanna do the whole portaging thing and \"roughing\" it!

When is a good time to do it? ie. no bugs, good temp (weather, water)

God knows i don\'t want to be eaten alive and get west nile and die! Damn you TM3 and the guys who encouraged me to go \"camping\"!

EDIT: disregard my question I just read the thread!
