I\'ve been easin\' up on the posts lately but I\'m still keeping up-to-date on what everyone is up to!

so I just got my PIE adapter for the ipod today and did the install. it was a super quick install thanks to whodilly for the service manual and teambedlam for showing me exactly how easy it is to rip apart the centre console..

so anyway, there weren\'t many pics of complete installs so I thought I\'d share mine. Let me know what you guys think. The bracket is actually 2 pieces (from p-mall) that I hacked a bit and then superglued together...I did that b/c I couldn\'t find one that was a slim enough profile... :D

to access the ipod I select \"CD\" twice and the display will show \"EX 1\". The \"1\" flashes which is sort of annoying b/c it keeps making me look at the display. :sarc

I love the nano...it\'s my first mp3 player (well...I had that phone that played mp3\'s like 5 years ago but that was only like 64mb..). I\'d say it\'s changed my life! haha - now i listen to random songs i love but never could catch on the radio and was too lazy to burn a cd for. it\'s all so easy now. i like the colour screen too and the fact that it\'s so damn small.

battery life could possibly use some help though..

i don\'t have the changer...but instructions came along with the PIE adapter on how to get it working with the cd-changer so i assume it should be OK. I can forward you the instructions if you want.

here\'s exactly what i put my order in as...

PIE Adapter: MAZ/PC-ALP

Instructions:
1. disconnect negative battery terminal
2. mount the cd-changer at the desired location following the instructions supplied by the cd changer manufacturer
3. remove factory radio from console
4. locate 16-pin cd-changer socket on rear of radio and plug in MAZ/PC-ALP
5. connect the alpine DIN cable to female 8-pin DIN socket on the MAZ/PC-ALP and route cable to mounting location of changer, being careful not to pinch or damage the cable
6. connect other end of alpine DIN cable to cd-changer
7. re-install hte factory radio into the console
8. re-connect the negative battery terminal

those are pretty much word-for-word. :)

Can you still use the controls on your steering wheel? can you change the songs and volume with your steering wheel control?

No, with the PIE adapter you cannot control the iPod, it is only a means of giving you an AUX-in.

Aww too bad. Then the steering wheel control will be a waste, non functional? I\'m still waiting for a module that will let me connect the ipod to the car and still be able to use the steering wheel controls.

you can still use the following steering wheel control functions: volume up/down, mute, change mode :D

you can\'t change tracks with the steering wheel controls though... :(

but i don\'t see how you would do it since all the songs are organized in various tree formats...how would you go up & down the file structure?? :sarc

I just ordered a PIE adapter, a Blitzsafe module (to charge and connect via dock connector) and the Alpine RCA cable from Discountcarstereo.com. With shipping it came out to $180USD.

There\'s a couple of modules out there already that allow you to use the steering wheel controls, but they are crazy expensive and really not worth it.

I got IceLink - yeah, it\'s expensive (~$200 US) but gets the job done.
Allows you to use the wheel controls, too. Now I always keep my iPod hidden in the ash tray compartment <-- you can\'t even tell it\'s there ;)

Coz

the two mounting pieces came from p-mall. the holder is basically a cell phone holder and I also got another bigger holder that plugs into the cigarette lighter...but I chopped the bigger holder leaving only the part that sticks into the cig lighter and stuck the smaller cell phone holder to that...

the electrical parts for connecting the nano came from discountcarstereo.com and there is something called a PIE adapter and the headphone jack thingy...

not too technical sorry!!! If you want to see more let me know if you\'re planning on coming to a meet - I might be able to make it but nowadays with the snow vancouver is looking a lot better! :)

I\'ve done a setup for my iPod mini using the Auxmod and a Belkin Tunebase holder/charger. For those that don\'t know, the Auxmod is a chip that installs in the underside of the HU and tricks the unit into thinking a tape deck/MD player is there. I went this route since I have the Mazda factory Sirius kit using the standard PIE input.

Yeah i want to start coming out to meets - and yeah i agree with you about the damn snow i hate this crap!!!

Just bought the iPod roadtrip for people who don\'t want a portable solution.

Works with all iPods and has a removable FM transmitter so you can take the tunes with you.

I just bought myself one of these from the Apple Store last night...

Flexible Dock (http://www.tentechnology.com/products/products_flexibledock.php)

Once installed, it looks a lot cleaner than my previous setup and the iPod\'s screen is much higher up. Now I get a better view of the movies that I have on my iPod...not while driving of course. ;)

What program are you using to compile the video into the iPod format? Videora took too long for me and all of the other ones resulted in out of sync audio, I\'m using Nero Recode.

Optimzer
12-14-2005, 04:33 PM
I\'m using Videora. It does take a while to convert videos and movies but what I usually will do is leave a batch of files for it to convert and do it on a secondary computer so I can just leave it on (i.e. - overnight). Maj deserves credit here as well for helping me discover DVD Decrypter. Then on Monday morning before a flight I just sync up my ipod and I\'m good for the week. :D

I haven\'t found Videora causes out-of-sync issues. The only thing I\'ve found in error was a video that ended up being \'jerky\' but that may have been b/c the virus check on the computer ran automatically. But that was just one case.

Apple store in Yorkdale? Does that unit just provide a charge? I think I could use that too - about how high up does it sit? Does it block any of the controls (HVAC, etc)?

Yes it charges and it sits about 6\" high, but you can twist the gooseneck into almost any shape you can think of so it won\'t interfere with the HVAC controls. As an added bonus, when you pull the key from the ignition, it pauses your iPod! It may seem precarious just sitting atop the gooseneck, but there is a latch that locks your iPod to the dock connector. I even bought myself a new silicone case from Xtrememac in which the entire bottom of the iPod is exposed (along with a screen and click wheel protector). The case fits on top of the gooseneck without having to roll up the case!

Meh, that product has been available on eBay for quite some time now (at least for the MZ3), and is cheaper to boot.

True, but you could also purchase the iPod link thing sold on eBay that wires into the CD changer port. Now that would be a good combo....iPod auto charging, playing through the factory deck, utilizing the steering wheel audio controls, and seeing the H/K display on the dash.

Too bad that whole package would run you $400USD and that doesn\'t include the iPod nor the time to install everything.

Nice install on the Nano, good idea with the cell phone holder, I like the blue lights. I use the old school FM modulators in my Mazda3 GT. In my Pathfinder I have a direct link via Pioneer premier AUX in or the actual Ipod control unit made by Pioneer. Here is a site that I use for some reference information on all Ipod stuff.

http://www.ilounge.com

For those who do not want to tamper with the dash and what not, these are simply solutions, however direct links to the headunit yeilds the best sound, hands down.

I have the Monster Cable unit, which is nice doubles as a charger and is compact, sound is ok static here and there.

http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/accessories/product/monster-icharger-for-ipod/

My favorite, and sounds really good for an FM modulator, charges and is a stable stand- its abit bulky but works well its the Griffen Technology Roadtrip:

http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/accessories/product/griffin-technology-roadtrip/

I also bought the Xtreme Mac Airplay 1st gen this unit is so so, but works nice with home radios. The second gen unit looks really good, I might go out and get one of these!

http://www.xtrememac.com/audio/airplay2.shtml

But first I have to get a direct stereo link - a shopping i will go, a shopping i will go....
