View Full Version : The dead pedal wagon

A few months ago I posted a thread about building custom parts for Mazda3.

After a lot of procrastination I finally have a rough CAD of an idea......

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y252/SourcE2/dp.jpg

Any thoughts, the logo and horizontal grips will not be cut through the aluminium, just milled in about 2-3mm. I was also toying with the idea of having them raised and not sunk into the pedal. The layout and overall design og the grips and customization is fully open to change.

So what\'s the word on the street?

Leave out the 3 and it will look mint. Just my opinion of course.

I think that sok7 has the market cornered on this one - yours looks very similar. Mine has good grip and a non slip feature which adds to it\'s rigidity.
I agree with flipspeed - ditch the 3 for a cleaner look.
Polished chrome would look good with non stick \"bubbles\" - any design ideas for pedals?

if anything, RAISE the horizontal strips instead of sinking them. also the 3 could stay there but it would have to be the same 3 as on the mazda3 emblem, otherwise as flipspeed said, keep it off..

I was planning on having the 3 the exact same as the mazda emblem, the ridges could easily be raised, and the surface would be brushed aluminum.

The product finish would be similar to a set of razo\'s. My 3A mill finishes to a very high standard. Hopefully I will have a proto soon for ya\'ll to look at...

Keep the feedback coming..... :p

I have been searching for a dead pedal for my 3 for ages. This one looks great. I agree with the above. Make sure the slits are raised and I like the 3. More importantly, when might you be ready to sell these?

How will the dead pedal be mounted? screws? or double sided tape?

As this is still in its design infancey, whatever the majority would feel more comfortable with.

I would prefer NOT to use tape, simply because it seems cheap and would not work as well as a couple of self tappers.

I want to build a very high quality product that is going to last.

That said, forum input is essential to the design of this, after all, its you guys who are going to hopefully be buying this product.

Thanks,

looks better without the 3 :)

I don\'t mind it having the 3 one way or the other, but if there was any way you could sell this to other car owners (the Mazda5 perhaps?), then I would leave the 3 out. I would also raise the strips for better grip as has already been mentioned.

I like the idea of the brushed aluminum, but would prefer an all black one. I would want it to look factory.

Either way, nice work, keep us posted on the progress.

Looks good! Do it up!
Will the slats have some kind of anti slip stuff?

I was thinking of colouring the pedal with a black anodize finish.

Maybe? Maybe not? :p

The rings will stand proud of the base and will be lined with an extending rubber ring for extra grip. Note that the base shape is not confirmed, still have to measure the damn car...! However I would it to be shaped to fit the area well, and not just a rectangle of aluminum. I am leaning towards 5mm 6063 aluminum, sturdy but not like a brick :D

Not too sure about the Mazda3 instrument panel design, but it too could be lined with rubber, or I could scrap the panel design all together.

Any thoughts?

no problem.. just sharing my opinion how little it\'s worth ;)

flange is that curved up piece (90deg, 1 cm or so) that would hug the side of the deadpedal area, just like it is in your first design (ribbed with a 3 in teh middle) and in the sok07 pedal i have. it adds something to the look.. finishes it off.. more pleasing to the eye.. i dunno.. presents continuity.. how\'s that? better? :p

I like the idea of the black anodized finish, and to be perfectly honest I don\'t care one way or the other about the flange, however here\'s my issue:

I assume people want a dead pedal so that they do not ruin the carpet in that area. However, if this or a similar style dead pedal were added, and it was say snowing outside, wouldn\'t all of the slush and salt just run down and absorb into the carpet at the bottom? That\'s not any better IMO. The perfect solution in my mind, which I know won\'t happen, is a pant-saver type of mat that will cover the entire footwell area including a portion for the deadpedal. Kind of like the way a cargo tray is molded to the trunk/hatch area, except for the footwell area.

Okay, my little sidetrack is done :p

Or velcro, or he can add a couple of countersunk holes for 1/4 inch screws (any short rustproof screws).

I think you should leave the 3 on there. It looks great!
