Folks ... In my quest to find Brake Pads / Rotors for AutoCross (Solo-2 and lapping), I came to the conclusion that there was not alot of options (At least by Honda Standards) sooo to keep everything straight I put together this list for myself ...and I thought I would share it.

Keep in mind this is NOT the definitive list nor is it 100% accurate ...So this is where you guys come in ...if you notice a mistake, or know of other options, can you post it up and I will update this list.

The Part numbers are as accurate as I could make them HOWEVER there may be typo\'s / mistakes so PLEASE do not order by these numbers alone ...please confirm the application if and when you place an order

I broke down the Brake pad options into four ROUGH types of pad to help determine what type of pad you might want. I do suggest that you reasearch the pads further to determine the compound that you might need/want. Each type of pad comes with its own set of positives and negatives, and comprimises.

Added PBR/Axis Front and Rear Pads (three flavours of each) to the list

The Ultimates/Ceramics were VERY good when I used them on my Civic .... Similar to the Hawk HP+ compound ...

Update

I just talked to my Wholesale contact about Grandsport pads ... they are now avaiable in GS-3, GS-4, GS-5, GS-6(rear)

The GS-5 should perform as well as Hawk HP+ and the GS-3 Should perform as well as the Hawk Blues ... Very good pads for the money

I have ordered a set of front GS-5\'s and a Set of Gs-3\'s for track days. I will be ordering a set of the Either the GS-6\'s or PBR Ceramic for the rears to match the front setup.

Cheers

I have a set of Hawk HP+ on order. The EBC Greens I have now are adequate for street driving but are rather susceptible to fading on the track, maybe even more so than the stock pads.

I\'ll get the part numbers when they come in. Good info btw.

Hmmm .... I did not think that the Hawks came in a HP+ ...only the HPS. When did they become available ????

Nope: I checked with the Canadian Importer/Distributor and they do not know as of yet ... I suspect by the end the year (2006) as it took almost a year for the Integra Type \"R\" rotors to be relesed in North America after they were realeased in Europe ...

Each of the 4 types of what, the pads ???

If you are refering to the Pads .... well the price is all over the place ... and the prices will vary by location / region

I were to guesstamate the approximate price ranges this is what they would be ... but the only way to know is to get a quote from a retailer or do some searching arround the web

OE Replacement $30-$75 a set
Street Performance $75-125 a set
High Performance Street / Track / HDPE $100-150 a set
Track $150 +

Rear paqds will generally be a bit cheaper .... but not allwyas

Brembo Rotors - I have not heard anything yet

One more question. Since brembo don\'t ship the 3 disc yet. Will any other mazda cars have the same size disc that we can use for the 3? ie. MPV, Mazda 6, protege, ?

Not that I am aware of ... one would need access to the Mazda parts look up to cross reference the rotors

I've had customers purchase both EBC Greenstuff and Hawk pads, both have made them happy. I've only sold the KVR rotors so far for the 3, and no complaints there either. The price/quality is a delicate balance, but I wouldn't recommend going cheap on either the pads or rotors, especially those $35 EBay rotors :)

can someone fill me in on the difference between

Hawk Ceramic are low noise + dust. Not sure about the performance. I believe it would be equal-to or better than OEM pads.

The HPS pads are "normal amounts of dust" and probably a bit more noise. Performance should be better than OEM for sure, though I think they will probably need to heat up a bit to get to proper operating temps. I have a friend who uses these plus some slotted rotors on his 3 and his brakes are substantially less than OEM performance at the beginning of his work commute.

I know some drivers who have also used HP+ and they are basically more extreme versions of HPS - even more resistant to brake fade caused by pads and can endure more abuse from track days but take even longer to warm up to proper operating temperature and can squeal a fair bit. These are street-able but probably not recommended for daily driving. Best thing would be to put them on for track days, drive to the track, have fun, drive home, put back OEM pads.

Not that you asked, but I would recommend that if you want shorter stopping distances on the street and you don't autocross or track, you should consider getting better tires first. They're more expensive than pads, but they will really help you all-around in more applicable everyday situations. Actually, the OEM pads are probably even pretty decent for autocross as you don't do a lot of high-speed braking. I know with OEM tires, it was my traction that gave way first before the brakes.

Oh and BTW, the Mazda3 parts numbers for Hawk in the first post seemed off. Here are the values from their website:

Front:

HPS Part: HB519F.682
HP PLUS Part: HB519N.682

Rear:

HPS Part: HB478F.605
Ceramic Part: HB478Z.605
HP PLUS Part: HB478N.605

Okay, its that time.

I just got told by the dealer I need to replace my rear pads. So I want to replace my braking setup to all new. I'm looking for a slight performance upgrade in pads. I'm wondering if its worth it or should I just pick up a set of pads from Canadian Tire. I'm looking into the Hawk HPS they seem right up my ally.

What gets expensive is that I'd like to replace my discs as well. I want either slotted or cross drilled OE Replacements.

I want to replace but improve a little at the same time. Where can I find a good deal. I really don't want to put a huge hole in the wallet. HELP ME!!! (Sponsors?)

Hawks HPS seem to be marginal better than OEM performance-wise but I haven't done quantitative tests. Where they definitely are better is in resistance to glazing if you do frequent heavy braking.

For daily driving, I've noticed that they do squeal slightly when cold and brake application is light (i.e. when you come to a relatively gentle stop at an intersection). It's a bit annoying as I never had this symptom with the OE pads.

Otherwise I've been running with Hawk HPS on all four corners for about 7 months now with no issue. I also replaced brake fluid around the same time.

Not sure about discs. The OEM discs seem more than adequate performance-wise - we have huge brakes for what is technically an economy car. But I guess slotted / cross-drilled look better. I wouldn't recommend changing them if your budget is limited.

Thanks for the informative write up Elder! ...best one I've read so far! I'm in the same boat as 3GFX and am planning on the HPS pads, as for rotors, if I can't find some zinc-coated blanks or slotted ones.I think I'll stick with the oem, your right they seem pretty good for the money.

I was suprised at how in expensive the OEM rotors are from Mazda. They are roughly $50 a piece which is awesome! The pads on the other hand, its cheaper to actually get an aftermarket performance set!

I'm still in search of rotors that are within my range....

Elder_MMHS
01-16-2008, 06:02 PM
One more addition - if you are doing frequent hard braking, you'll want to change brake fluid above all else. It will likely boil and cause brake fade long before your pads glaze.

Fluid > Pads > Rotors.

Long, informative read:

I haven't had a chance to take off my wheels yet, but are the OEM rotors vented?

Also, My parking/e-brake is pretty stiff, I don't really mind it, but is that normal? It doesn't go up very high in order to set it.

Front Rotors are vented
Rears are not vented.

If you need to set your handbrake really high, that means your handbrake may needs some maintenance.

there really is no need for vented rear.
Most of the braking is done by the front, and Mazda 3 is technically a sub-compact.
look at it this way, we save money on parts

I think even the speed 3 is non-vented rear. (can a speed3 owner confirm please).

My rear rotors went first and I asked at the dealership about it and they told me that the the rears usually go first on the the 3 due to the brake force distribution.

I'll be in the US to pick them up and the price looks good. Building a set of generic is either the same or even more expensive.

I know the slotted/drilled isn't necessary but that's the way they come.

I didn't buy them yet as i didn't end up going to the US.

Shipping to Canada is pricey and I don't need them yet but expect to need them soon as i'm at 104K.

I was told on my last service that my brake pads are done. I have a safety inspection coming up so double the reason to get these fixed. I have a Mazda 3 GX 2008 and was told that it will cost be approximately $400 + tax by the service shop. I want to get these myself and online as I assume that will be cheaper. I want the basic stuff, any links to what will suffice?

Thanks a bunch

Hi all,

Sorry noobie here. I was told I need to get my front brake pads and rotors changed. Looking for recommendations on what to get. Just a daily driver nothing crazy performance needed. Should I buy OEM parts?

Thanks

You have some choices.
- Max brakes. Fairly reasonable prices. It mostly has good reviews.
- dealership with TM3 discount. OEM is not cheap even with the discount but many members recommend them.
- Nextmod rotors and pads. OEM type. Generally good reviews. Although I think I heard the price went up or they switched to a more expensive brand.
- AC Delco. I just got my front rotors and pads replaced with AC Delco premium coated rotors and premium ceramic pads. Rotors don't rust like the OEM ones. Got a 10% discount on parts and labour from the shop that I used in Richmond Hill. Happy with them.
- Canadian Tire/Napa/Parts Source will have cheaper and more expensive options.
- Rockauto online has some good prices.

Thanks for the suggestions Jackal! If you don't mind, could you share how much you ended up spending? The dealership is quoting me $500+ which seems like a lot. But I have no idea what's a reasonable price.

I probably went overboard on mine but I got premium/pro grade AC Delco parts. Total was around $400 but it is better than the OEM stuff. Rotors are thicker and made of material that dissipates heat faster and coated so they won't rust. Pads are pro grade ceramic. Add 1.5 hours for labour (which should include servicing and lubricating calipers, bushings and slider pins). That's where you're paying more at the dealership. Had mine done at Lucky 8 in RH.

If you go dealership, go to an Affiliated Dealership with TM3 where you can get 20% off on parts (not labour). You will be able to save some money but ask the advisor beforehand if they can give the discount.

If you go with slightly cheaper parts from Canadian Tire or Maxbrakes - oem type front rotors and pads $125 taxes in and bring them to an independent shop and just pay the 1.5 hours of labour (1 hour is in the range of 70-80 per hour for an independent shop). So that would set you back $125-160 for parts and about $130 (labour taxes in). So you're looking at around $300 or cheaper this route.

All of these will work fine but the dealership OEM or better parts will most likely last longer than the cheaper stuff.

Here's my experience. I installed new rotors + pads in June, so I have about 5k on them under all weather conditions, so I know I can safely recommend this setup for daily use.

Rotors are the Centric premium part # 120.45066 & 120.45068
Pads are the Stoptech Street performance (also made by Centric) 308.10440 & 308.10950

Pads came with all necessary gear (hardware, lube)

I left out the prices because, well, many people aren't going to drive across the border to pick up the parts, and getting them in Canada would mean a much higher cost.

But, for the record, I guess I can edit my post with the prices I paid and from where I got the parts.

Edit: well, looks like I can't edit my previous post, so I'll post the prices here.
The pads were 50$ CAD a pair including shipping to the US border from RockAuto (always google "rock auto 5% discount code" first)
The rotors were 43$ each for the fronts and 30$ each for the back, including shipping to the US border from JC Whitney (always use a coupon finder for this site)

I then paid the taxes at border crossing, so add about 40$ for that. Total cost roughly 285$

I DIY installed them, at a cost of 2 beers.

max brakes is a good option. Been using max brakes for almost two years now and no issues.

Rock Auto is a good source for brake pads, but be aware of Stop Tech Street series 308, they are actually Posi-Quiet ceramic series#105 ,so you will pay premium for nothing. I returned one set thinking I will get back the correct part, nope, same thing came in the box. So, lesson learned, no Stop Tech Street anymore. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180720/715fded2eb54a38c4c506c533f240195.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180720/35d0de826b0174fc4645daaa5632784c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180720/5467205840d42353e21d0b3448deb16b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180720/6bdfdbd0fc7bf3afcd2cf136f38b962d.jpg

Also pay attention to the friction code written on the pads, that tells you something about braking power of the pads. These are FG , metallic one is FE for the same brand

So its time for me to change mine... OEM Rotors and Pads are about $670 with TM3 discount...my have times changed. Is anything better than OEM? I found Hawk has not been as grippy as OEM

$670 for OEM rotors and pads? That's $167 a corner. I don't know where you got that price but its seems extremely high.

Check out MaxBrakes first. I paid less then $200 for their top set all around, and are still on them almost 5 years later.

I can't remember how they compare to OEM cause I haven't had OEM for many years, but they are pretty good.

Sorry I looked at the quote again $587.88 taxes in with TM3 Discount.. I was looking at Max Brakes too.. how grippy are they? Mind you I've been on some random Cross Drilled Rotors on Hawks and Jimmy was telling me should switch back to OEM. Did you use their pads too?

Yes I used their pads also, which are ceramic. I purchased the MaxBrakes Elite XDS which is their top brake kit.

They are grippy enough, I have no issues stopping and they have good feel. Also damn good in emergency stops.

I've had them on for atleast 5 years of mostly city driving over 100k kms and they still shine, although the backs are down.

I'll be getting the Elite XDS again possibly this spring or summer 100%. You can't beat the price ($200), and I'm happy with the performance and durability.

Unfortunately their site seems to be having issues. I'll probably just call ahead and go up there like I did the last time to pick them up.

MaxBrakes Elite XDS look super nice with the M1supreme brake pads.

I went with the R1 Concept CarbonGeomet series with Performance Sport brake pads.
I bit more expensive than Maxbrakes.
