I was wondering if some of the more gheek-like posters could help me on this problem. My wife runs a discussion board for students (NO I\'M NOT GOING TO TELL YOU THE URL FOR FEAR THAT BROLI WILL POST WHORE ON THAT BOARD TOO). Lately, she\'s found that a couple of posters have been intimidating the other posters through threats by PM.

Although she bans them they just sign up under another handle and continue with the immaturity. The only that I\'ve been able to get from the posters is their IP address. I\'ve done a search on the Internet for IP locator but I get different results on each website. In most cases, it\'s all Greek to me. We would like to figure out at least who these people are so we can notify the service provider for the abuse and put a stop to it.

So my question is as follows. Is it possible to track the identity of someone through an IP address and if so.....HOW?

I have no idea about your question, but I thought it was possible to ban a full IP address and not just a user, thus those idiots could not sign up using a different handle unless they were accessing from another computer/location.

We were thinking of that but someone had advised us that it may not be wise because some Internet providers (Rogers) use the same IP address for a bunch of computers in an area. We didn\'t want to ban an IP address and loose a bunch of posters at the same time. Kinda like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Please keep in mind I haven\'t been able to confirm this through Rogers.

rogers and cogeco are pretty good in that they keep a static ip (for months) mabell is a different story :sarc your ip changes more often than you change your dirty underwear (flipping inside out doesn\'t count) thus, ip banning isn\'t a favourable choice..

now you can always use reverse dns service (http://remote.12dt.com/rns/).. look up 24.100.100.100 (random IP) and you get CPE0004e235fc3f-CM014250041074.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com from here we know that this person is on rogers and they will be able to determine what the prefix means (back when i was on rogers i remember there used to be bloor1.rogers.com wldlfe.rogers.com for bloor/royal york and mississauga areas but i forget those now) and who it belongs to etc etc..

alternatively you can use this (http://psacake.com/web/eg.asp) just tried it and it\'s nice b/c it gives you rogers\' contact info :)

and finally the \'geekiest\' ;) sol\'n.. and much quicker.. go to start button, run, type in \"cmd\" w/o quotes, at the prompt type in \"nslookup 24.100.100.100\"

cheers

Thanks majic. That just gave me more information than we had. At least we know the Internet Provider for these little farkers. And yes, they\'re on Bell Sympatico so it will have to be up to bell to respond to this promptly.

I can\'t believe I typed that last statement without laughing.

:D

Makes sense to me.

Is it possible to find an IP even thou it might be routed through different servers? Like a hacker that wants to hide his IP from everyone else.

that\'s usually pretty sophisticated stuff.. I doubt that ppl goofing around on a forum could mask their ip like that..

easier than you think (http://www.google.com/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=anonymizer&sourceid=o pera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8)

go to any one of those proxies and surf to http://www.whatismyip.com ...then don\'t surf there via a proxy (i.e. like you normally would), you will see the IP address is different.

similarly, there are a number of IP spoofers which do exactly as descriped, spoof an IP address so you appear to come from some place different....for instance, spoofing an IP address from another country.

So is there such a thing as an IP un-spoofer?

it\'s hard to obtain the IP of a person on MSN Messenger via a conversation ...this is so since the connection for the messages go through Microsoft\'s servers.

open a Command Prompt (start -> run -> cmd) and type \"netstat -na\"

you will see IPs of 207.46.2.xxx and 207.46.0.xxx with a port of 1863. those are MSN connections.

what you can do is download a port sniffer, such as Ethereal, and enable it on your network card connected to the internet. Then, set up a file transfer, webcam, or audio invite to the person on your list. The negotiation between you and your friend will result in the IP address being shown in the sniff.
