So after reading up on what people have been running on this board I decided it was time for me to upgrade audio once again.
Im currently running a
Pioneer MP-80 Headunit
Jbl 301.1 Sub Amp Running about 300watts rms
2 10\" JBL 1000 Sub\'s Wired into 2ohms.
Stock Door\'s
I went to G&G today and got a great deal on the JL VR series components and coax\'s. So those will go in, but my main question is what subs, if even I should replace.
The options are
3 10\" 10W0 with JL 250/1 Amp
OR
1 10\" 10W7 with JL 500/1 Amp.
I dont really want it \"boomy\" I want some nice tight bass that has a good round sound. A combo of both SPL and SQ.. but if i had to choose one SQ. Also, considering the two box styles available for the W7. Both the ported and sealed. Steve at G&G mentioned someone was running a W7 in a sealed and sounded great.
I think the amp and subs i got at present are decent... but i know it could be better. And presently my amp is on the fritz and being repaired so it might be my chance to just start over.
Any help would be much welcome.. thanx.

Okay first off, good choice on the JL stuff ;) Now, nobody can tell you which set-up will be better as you\'d have to listen to both and decide which you prefer. For me, I wouldn\'t choose either of those. The 3 W0\'s, while good drivers, will take up too much room IMO. Also, the 10W7 is a pretty crazy sub, usually a lot more speaker than many really need. It\'s also a hungry bastard, and I\'ve heard more than a few people say that the 500/1 isn\'t even powering that to it\'s potential, and that a 1000/1 is more suited to it.
Having said all of that I would go with a 10W6v2....it\'s considerably newer technology then the W7\'s, plays super low and is very musical, is more efficient than the W7\'s, and costs less to boot. Read some reviews on the W6.....very impressive, and if I could afford it would\'ve been the route I would\'ve taken.
BTW, I have a good friend who works at Gemsen, the exlusive Canadian dealer for JL gear, and where retailers like G&G get their goods. Even he is getting a W6 over a W7, and he gets it all for near cost price!

Thank PCIVIC for your quick reply.
As I was driving around as well I was thinking pretty much what you are saying. The W7 is crazy hungry, and not very efficient. And for me to set it up to for full potential will require 1000/1. Dont know if i wanna spend that kinda dough. After all at a certain point I find that its to much bass. 3 W0\'s. After much consideration, Im gonna pass altogether. I know Im gonna want a higher series sub for sure and I dont believe that it will be a big enough change for the money to be spent. As far as boxes go? I dont mind the size of box for the 3 10WO, its roughly the same size as the box I got at present, but the H.O. box for the W7. Thats a monster.
I was driving area Yonge & Steeles area to drop off my GF so I decided to check out Auto Sound Design. The guy there suggested a good option of 2 10W3\'s. Ill do some reviews on it and check it out.

Well, if it makes a difference I have one 10W3v2 in my 3 powered by 250watts rms (part of my JL 500/5 amp). I love it, but it does not \'pound\' like my 12W3v2 did which I sold recently. I would again suggest going with one 12w3v2 vs. two 10w3v2\'s......you will get near the same performance but with half the power required, which means money saved on both the sub(s) and amp. What kind of box do you intend on using?

Thats a big dilema right now. What box. I am leaning toward a sealed box in any setup that I do. Mainly for space restraints and I like the nice tight bass. The H.O. ported boxes that JL has to offer are much larger.. my main concern is depth.
I wanna be able to still lift up the first section of the trunk cover to get to the storage cubby.
I keep alot of stuff in there and wanna be able to open it. Currently my box does come close so I have no worries. Ill have to remeasure to see how close the JL\'s will get.
My main concern is mainly if I go W6. If I go sealed, I will save space. But I dont wanna sacrifice a great deal of SPL by not going H.O. I know that the full potential of these subs are meant for the ported.

In my wife\'s hatch we have a 10W3v2 in a sealed box made to JL specs and it fits in the corner perfectly. You can still fold down the 60 portion of the 60/40 seats and flip up the first section of the trunk.

So I think I have come to my conclusion.
I am going to go with a Single 10W6 in a sealed box, running off of a JL 500/1. Im not big on SPL more SQ but I feel that this sub will provide some SPL, if not more than enough.
I\'ve gone with sealed for a tighter bass response, and save some room.
Now, I would like everyone\'s opinion. I will be leaving a pair of 10\"JBL\'s GT100\'s in a sealed box.
If I run the same amp for both setups... the JL 500/1. Which might produce a better overall output?
I\'m still betting that the single 10W6 will outpreform the dual JBL 10\'s.
Any thoughts??

That\'s a tough call....but I can tell you that the W6 would be more musical while still being capable of some decent SPL. I\'ve only ever heard JBL subs once a while back and have to say that I was fairly impressed, but I can\'t recall the model number or what was powering them.

So I picked up the Component and Coaxial\'s this afternoon and I cant wait to install them.
As I was speaking with Steve, the W6 is pretty decent price. About 450 in a sealed box, about what I remember seeing on here. The amp however is a bit more pricey. 500/1 is going for $680. Ill wait to see if I can get a better deal or wait for a bit.

Yeah, JL amps are pretty pricey, that\'s one thing I\'ve always disliked. They also tend to hold their value well, so used ones are often not that \'cheap\' when available.

Hey,
I\'m running the JL ProWedge W6 in my car with just over 400w mono amp, the SPL is not great but the SPQ is awesome. It fits real nice, I can lift the cover and fold 60% of the seat back.
If you would like to take a listen to it, maybe we can set something up it would give you a better idea if its what you want.
