I bought my M3 back in August and love it! I have the AT with tiptronic or triptronic on it, I love to drive it in the manual mode, upshifting and downshifting. Is is a bad thing to use all the time? I do notice that I go through gas a heck of a lot faster using it. Any insight would be great! Thanks!

I don\'t think it\'s a bad thing to use it all the time. I mean, it\'s there for a reason..

and about ur car going thru more gas.. I didn\'t notice that.. but maybe u\'r shifting too late/early?? I usually shift at 20 km intervals.. that is, shift to second at 20 km/h, shift to third at 40km/h, etc as per the instruction manual\'s suggestion. Or you could shift at about 2500 rpms..

when do you shift gears??

I do\'nt know about using the tiptronic too often because one of my friend is uses his tiptronic everyday everytime he hopes into the car. And now he is having problems with his car. Not sure what problem but i\'ll update the issue as soon as i talk to him again. But at this time IMO i suggest don\'t use it too often.

for bmw\'s steptronic and i assume for every other higher quality manufacturer, they recommend that you break in the car at 10000km before using it. so Pearl_Hatch, your friend might have pklayed wiht it to early?

for our car there is nothing like that, that i remember. i used to drive in the manual mode EVERY DAY. rofl raped by milage but thats cause i downshift exactly when im allowed to (from 2 downshift to 1 as soon as it hits 40km/h) makes me think im driving a manual =D

There aren\'t very many situations where you downshift from 2 -> 1 in a manual, let alone at 40km/h. :sarc

I just let the car downshift by itself..

just leave the gear changes to the computer.. isn\'t that why you got AT??? as clem said.. wtf are you doing downshifting to 1st at 40kph??? if you wnat to shift for real trade it in for 5MT :sarc

tranny costs 9K so i hope you haven\'t ****ed it up yet...

lol...typical kid these days...

What autoexe said...the first thing i learned with my driving lesson guy was to never shift into first with manual...The transmission of the mazda3 is the extact same as the normal auto...just a extra lever to select gears rather than going from 1-2-o/d off-o/d on...its bad for the engine and transmission to shift gears in the auto...you can do it if you plan on keeping the car for less than 5 years...the $$ problems starts coming up after that though

yeah.. you can still do that 1) if you have 5MT 2) just let the computer shift 3) shift properly (or know when to downshift)

anyway.. if it\'s still good then it\'s all good ;)

Everybody wants a piece of your new car. I can totally understand. But eventually, you really are the only person driving it.. sigh.. and the bad thing is, Mazda actually make $400 more profit off auto than manual. ($1000 = $600 (cost of actual auto over manual) + $400 (extra profit)) ;)

I usually change to gears when it reached no more then 3000/3500 rpm\'s. I do not downshift to 1st gear as I know how to drive stick and I know not to....Will it wreck the tranny if I use it too much? If yes, then what is the point in having it? What is it supposed to be used for?

It won\'t wreck the tranny if you use the Sport mode a lot. Now if you suddenly switch from auto to sport mode you might. I\'ve done it once by accident and all I heard was a loud bang from the engine bay. Hmm..maybe that\'s the reason my engine mount was leaking??:D

what do you mean by suddenly switch from auto to sport mode?? do you mean u\'r driving in auto and then while going 60km/h down yonge street you just switch over to sport?? if so, then I\'ve been told that that\'s ok.. you can switch back and forth while driving.. if it doesn\'t work then something\'s wrong.. I\'ve done it a few times just for the sake of testing out my car but I normally switch over when I\'m stopped at a red light..

when idling, if u switch from auto to manualmode u can hear this funny sound, well i hear this funny sound, does anyone else hear it? i think something is PHYSICALLY moving to use manualmode, but then isnt this manualmode just telling the ecu to switch when it recieves a command? why would tbehr ebe moving parts in this?!

I\'ve done some reading and a search on 3 different Mazda Forums about prolonged use of the Sport Automatic Transmission and I can\'t come up with conclusive proof that shows this being detrimental to the car. I\'m going to do an Internet search to see what pops up if I can make it past all that porn.

Word of warning.

When searching the Internet for information on tiptronic trannies use the full version of the word \"transmission.\" It saves alot of references to questionable websites poping up.

9K for a tranny. I think that would be out of the crate from the factory.
I am sure if the the tranny should go and is fixed under warranty I would think they would only fix what is broken, a rebuild, and not put in a 9K tranny. $9,000 X 3 == $27,000... the price of a new car, tax in on the road, out the door.

That\'s it! I\'m done!

I\'ve done a pretty good search online for information and I haven\'t been able to find evidence that using the AMT in manual mode for a prolonged period of time causes damage. Most people object to if for personal reasons. But then again this doesn\'t mean that damage isn\'t being done.

oh, I don\'t know if I like ur give up attitude.. j/k man.. :D

anyways, I don\'t see a problem with using tiptronic mode as long as you know when to shift up.. and maybe u guys should be letting the computer down shift for u since it knows best and it\'s been programmed to do so.. the car downshifts in tiptronic mode just like if it were in auto but it won\'t upshift until u shift..

if my memory serves me correctly, I remember reading in the manual that if you need to stop quickly you can downshift manually in tiptronic mode.. it\'ll help you stop quicker..

yah and you mentioned this same thing a while back (http://torontomazda3.com/forum/read.php?TID=3065&page=2#41987).. at least you\'re consistent :sarc

whether they put in a new or rebuilt tranny that was WORST case scenario WHICH COULD STILL HAPPEN.. and god forbid it\'s AFTER the warranty expires..

umm

lol lets just put it this way.

unless you own an expensive luxery car that has a manual shift option, it will only hurt the car if you have not broken in the car first (eg break in engine as prescribed WITHOUT USING THE manualmode).

for our cars, im sure our manualshift mode isnt really sophistocated and shoudlnt require much conditioning at all. but if u want to make sure, just break in the car normally while not using the manual shift option!

haha this topic is to long

If you\'re coming to a stop, sure. If you are driving normally you better learn how to drive unless you want to mess something up.
