So, I dropped by Treo from waist height onto ceramic floor. LCD is cracked in certain places. It\'s going to cost $250 to get fixed. After my firm\'s discount, I had only paid $250 for it! So the frickin repair is going to cost me the same amount as the capital cost of my phone. WHAT A KNOB I AM. :(

Someone\'s selling used screens on eBay, but I don\'t think it\'s quite an easy plug and play thing.

Anyone here, by chance, work for Palm? :D

Ack... should have had a leather case... my expereince with dropping numerous PDAs is that the ones wrapped in leather tend to survive better when dropped.

Incidentally, you can drop an IBM T or R series laptop from a height of 3 feet & nothing will happen to it (so long as you drop it on its base)... dropped on it\'s corner from 1 foot, cracked screen, lol...

What a $hitty product Palm makes.

You\'d think that a product like this aimed for the retail market could withstand some punishment. Like being run over by a car. But, hell, it can\'t even take a simple blunt force trauma of a couple of tons without cracking all over the place.

Yes, dropped my phone in the GO lot (after an all-nighter at work; didn\'t even know I lost it til the next day). Was returned to the GO station this morning, with, um, some, um, minor \"cosmetic\" damage. A total write off.

Anyone have any hook ups with Bell Mobility? <sigh>

don\'t mean to seem like a smartass ;) and it might be a little late but ever thought of getting a case for the device?

EDIT: btw.. when did u buy it? did you use a CC? b/c SOME companies cover you for 90days against theft .. so you could claim it as stolen ;)

*sounds in the background* \"step away from the computer and put your hands behind your head..\" dun dun dun..

Trust me, that would not be possible.

I did! After the first incident, I got myself a really nice case with magnetic clip. Very secure. But the wifey called me in the middle of my nap on the train and I really don\'t recall what I did next with the phone. If it went back into the case, there\'s no chance it could have come out. <double sigh>

What a $hitty product Sony makes.
All I did is just sat my a$$ down on that thing (I have/had a Sony Clie palm device) - the screen cracked and the replacement cost twice as much as I paid for the whole damn thing!
Damn electronics, why can\'t they last? :sarc

It seems like the Blackberry is a pretty resilient product. I\'d give it a go, but I\'ve gotten used to the Treo.

I\'ve got a couple of associates who had both the Treo 600 and the newer 650 - all crap was their reporting. One had a cracked screen and was replaced three times under warranty. This stuff is not one of Palm\'s better devices.

I have a PDA for calendar and appointment tasks - with a cellular having the dedicated task of phone calls and messaging. The problem with an \"all-in-one\" device is the \"weakest link\" scenario - if one component fails they all go down. Blackberry seems to be the way to go - yet the new generation cells can do everything within a smaller compact body as the Nokia has shown.
Will RIM continue to offer service in the US with the recent court ruling?
US Government types hope so....

I work for RIM in waterloo in the manufacturing plant as basically a repair technician. (So I fix blackberries)...If you bought the LCD from ebay I bet I could bring it in and fix it, although I cant make any promises.

Could save you alot of cash though... just a thought :)
