So the wife wants an MP3 player, and ideally would like the iPod Mini (no longer made, but a few new ones around on eBay) or the Nano (having some issues with scratching, faulty screens, and weak battery). I myself prefer the iRiver for a variety of reasons, but wanted to know if anybody here has any experience with it or a similar iRiver model.

i know this one doesn\'t do pictures/videos and all but i myself have the iRiver ifp-899 (http://www.iriveramerica.com/prod/ultra/800/ifp_899.aspx).. i like it for its portability (size/weight - could be a tad less bulky tho) battery life (it\'s a removable AA) and ease of use .. oh and it doubles as a usb key (not that i use it for that but it can be used).. also you can flash the firmware and you can do away with annoying sowtware and SRM crap :sarc if you want to see it in action, let me know and we can meet up :)

I\'ve seen your model but we want something with more storage.....in the 4-6 gb range. We typically download high quality music (192-320kb/s) and it won\'t take long to fill 1gb. Overall though are you happy with the quality of the unit?

icic.. the reason i went for that unit is - flash based.. don\'t like the idea of moving parts. anyway, i am very pleased with the quality and faetures it offers. it\'s not flimsy and even the battery door stays on shut.. the firmware/os on the player is quite intuitive and makes use of all buttons to change settings and play music.. earbuds aren\'t that bad either!!!

Yeah, the only thing I like about the Nano is that it\'s flash based memory....not a HDD.

I have the iRiver H140, had it just over a year now. It has been a great player. Battery life has been very good, and sound quality as expected.
as for the HD versus flash memory, I have never had an issue with skipping. I have used it at the gym, running outside, inline skating, never a problem.

Okay, why does the iRiver not have a good aftermarket? I think we may have to go with the Nano just based on all of the accessories we want :(

The Nano is nice. I finally got to get a feel of it. So light and thin. I think if you want i can get you a good price. But not sure i should post it here. Leave me a pm if you\'re interested.

Too late....we got a white (of course) Nano yesterday. I\'m still not 100% sold, but Future Shop is willing to let us try it out and return in by January 20th, 2006 if not 100% happy. That should give us plenty of time to \'evaluate\' the player. So far I have to say it is very intuitive, nice screen, sound quality with good headphones is great, and the fit and finish looks pretty damn good. If you can believe it, my wife was given an iPod Shuffle as a \'thank you\' today at work!

Wow....my wife just told me that TD gave a 1GB shuffle to every single TD Canada Trust employee as a thank you for being rated the #1 bank in Canada in terms of customer satisfaction! They all say TD on them though. And sorry Majic, she already gave it to her bro. Yeah, so if anyone sees a ton of TD iPod shuffles on eBay in a little bit you\'ll know why.
