Lets see pictures of your winter rides, whether it be a beater, your daily driver on steelies or whatever!

Here\'s my boat, currently in snow-plow mode... I\'m gonna remove the front lip, maybe in the next few weeks or so. This is my first winter running the car lowered. It\'s dropped about 2\" at all 4 corners. I\'m also running it with 14\" steelies & some Crappy Tire winter tires (that are actually pretty kick-ass)

Only 2\"? Wow! Looks like it was dropped more than that.

Mr Fatty
11-30-2005, 10:43 AM
LOL, it was supposed to be only 1.5\" or so, but when it settled, it came to about 1.75\". I\'m running a different profile tire for my Winters, which is probably why it\'s now almost tucking. I normally run 205/50/15, but these winters are something like 185/65/14... I can\'t remember exactly.

This was the car last year, in front of Lockdown when Soopa was getting his Compustar installed:

I actually really like the steelies look and no hub cups of any sort are coming close to my black beauties.

I even washed my steelies before I put them on my car. A coworker commented that I had the cleanest steelies in the whole work parking lot. :)

kinda reminds me of the Road Warrior look. I thought of habcaps on mine - but nah - minimilism is in this season - and black is beautiful! I can\'t wait for spring (it\'s been a hard winter).
Hey perthguy - what\'s the temp down under as a reference?:p

If you do it make sure you get the spinner hub caps from crappy tire.
Those things are the coolest.

RedRaptor\'s pic looks like him grabbing the camera as quick as possible to snap the pic as someone is stealing his car and getting away with it ... :p

I don\'t steal other ppl\'s winter tire black steelies ... I go around putting fugly hub caps on them ...

majic, do a search for picture(s) of hot girls in minimal clothing modelling beside salt covered cars in a dirty slushy winter road setting! I sure as hell can\'t find any pics of that.

Like Card Fang said, there is a paid parking meter on the street.:)

don\'t laugh, that white boy holds the following record:

“Informer” held the #1 spot on the Billboard Singles Chart for seven weeks in 1993, entering up a Guinness Book Of World Records as the biggest selling reggae single and highest charting reggae single in history. “Informer” went on to sell 8 million units worldwide and 3.2 million units in the U.S.

^^ That was gonna be my follow-up question. :)
I don't have any experience in this stuff but I would think that it's a good thing. But whether it's necessary is a different story.

I remember my high-school friend's dad stored his 300ZX raised on blocks so that the car is resting on the chassis rather than wheels/suspension. Now I wonder if that's worth the trouble.

Resting it on the chassis seems very unecessary. Those of us driving the car around through the winter suffer no consequences, nor do any other cars driven normally. Simply being parked sure isn't going to jar something loose or mess anything up.

Before installing the tires afte ra sudden MAJOR dump of snow on the city. Not to mention the Goodyear RSA's I had on my car stock from June 2006 were completely done.. That day of driving in the snow was scary until I put the Dunlop Winter Sport M3's on.

Sorry about the quality of the pics. It was daker than it appeared, and the pics are from my cell phone.

what you could do as well is to jack up the car and put foam blocks under each of the tires to prevent them from getting flat spots.
However, if your garage is not heated, I would suggest that you put the car up on jack stands and take all the tires off and store them in a warm place (ie. inside the house)

i say you still nedd to drive it ones a week so u dont get flat spots on ur tires
That only happens if you store your car un-driven for a lot longer than the winter. It's not necessary to drive it at all over the winter. You won't get flat spots on the tires if the car is sitting that long.

I put the PSI up to about 40 so that they don't get flat spots, and i put a fuel stabilizer in the gas and filled her up to prevent condensation in the tank.

I am going to get some rounded stop blocks from cnd tire for the tires so that they rest against a curve not and edge though

All of this for a Mazda, wow. I wonder what you would do if you had a Lambo or Ferrari. lol I say drive the damn car. It's not going to be worth any more since it wasn't winter driven!

Although I don't have a speed3, I can tell you tips about what my father and I do with our motorcycles.
Tyres - IIRC my stock mazda3 came with 50psi in the tyres to 'prevent flat spots' on route from over seas, so I'd do what you suggested (40-50psi). I take off my bike tyres but pump up the air thou.

Suspension - whether it is my motorcycle or my dads sled, we always leave the entire suspension unsprung. Having it sitting full weight in my mind makes the suspension go flat. It's not to hard to put the car up on 4 stands, heck it will even solve your flat tyres if you do (if you leave them on).

Rust prevention - top off the fuel, run stabilizer through it, change the oil and fog the exterior (underside, suspension) with WD40.

Battery - pull the battery out and bring it inside with a manual or automatic trickle charger.

I have an 89 olds for a beater that i bought a few years ago for $800... winter rims and tires for the speed would cost twice as much and then it'd be a pain to clean in the spring so instead of getting ride of the beater why not use it and save money?

I do need to disconnect the battery though

Climate controlled storage.

I say drive the damn car. It's not going to be worth any more since it wasn't winter driven!

I disagree. Any car will benefit from winter storage (if done right):
- reduced mileage
- car will stay in better condition since it will not have to go through harsh road/weather conditions (ie. salt on roads, salt being thrown at you from salt trucks, chunks of ice flying off some stupid driver on the 401, etc.)
- Interior (especially the carpet) will remain in better condition.
All of which will help with resale value if you plan on selling the car.

Like obviously I do see many positives for storing a car in the winter but I also see negatives that would make me want to drive my car year round.

Yes it will be in better condition but I plan to get a new car every 2-4 years so I don't mind salt on the roads as I will never have to deal with rust.
Your paying for a car while it is parked, you need to have insurance and maintain a 2nd car also which is an added expense.
It's not a highend car that is un-drivable in the winter like a GT3 or a SL500

I do say if you can store it go ahead but it's just not something I would consider.

Just because it's not a high end car, doesn't mean it shouldn't be cared for.

The winter is harsh on cars... if he wants to protect his car and can afford to store it while he drive a car he doesn't care so much about!! of course he would!!

like I said.. I wish I could afford too.. I'd protect my new car too!!!

I never understand why people will buy a car and then store it and drive an unsafe POS on the roads when it's most dangerous out there.... especially when its a non-exotic

What's the point of "saving" your car, I mean it's meant to serve you not the other way around...hell if I had an Audi R8 or a Porsche I'd stick some winter rubber on there and continue to enjoy what I pay for year-round.

+100000

Couldn't agree with you more. Slapping a set of new winter tires on a old POS doesn't make it winter safe. You need a reliable car out there that won't leave you stranded. I've driven older vehicles going up in the winter time and I've always had trouble with them. When I saved enough money for the 3, there wasn't a doubt in my mind that I was going to drive it in the winter as well.

ptfire

It's one thing to store your car and protect it from the salt and sand but what is protecting you and any other person in the car? Air bags work, part of the reason why newer cars are so heavy is because of their safety standards. So to park your new mazda with all it's safety features to drive a car that is not as safe doesn't make sense.

sjd
11-27-2007, 10:03 PM
I agree, cars were meant to be driven. The other thing to remember is it has been proven that cars deteriorate faster sitting doing nothing, sure cosmetically they might be better but mechanically I would be concerned. Look at how much rust forms on rotors just from sitting a little. Now imagine several months of that not to mention that your cylinder walls will be bare from sitting when you start the engine again.

I wish I could have season-specific cars. Park my MS3 for the winter when I take out my STi. And in the summer, when I don't need the convenience of the hatch, I'd take out my Carerra GT... :bana

For the last many years I've had a summer/winter car. It's definitely a toss up as to your commute, preparation and choice of BOTH vehicles. I was given a car off the inlaws about 5 years ago (88 Buick Lesabre) and paid exactly $.15 in taxes for it ;) and drove it as my daily and winter car. I prepped that damn car with winter tires, brake adjustment and many other things so my 'Summer' cars would not rack up the 160 kms per day in the summer and never in the winter. I still think that the initial cost well outweighs the potential depreciation. That said my recent winter car decided to have BOTH front doors freeze then completely break the external handles thus letting me NOT get into my car at all last week. I now have to get in through the passenger door (kinda fixed) and Never lock the damn thing.....then the battery died on Monday, leaving me stranded.
Why the F--K am I depending on this car every day again?? ;)

Observant Sonic Boy, you are right - 17" Sport Editions from "the Rack" with Dunlop WinterSport M3's. The rims are a little more shiny than I would have preferred, would have liked something a little darker (titanium or black), but alas they were on sale! Some of the other rims they had were very nice but had much of their rim close to the edge of the wheel. Didn't want to bang up otherwise good looking rims. For roughly the same price of steelies, I got these instead! They are very similar to the GT rims.
Sorry about the ginormous pic - but, hey go big or go home right, but wait I AM at home...
