Well guys i was lucky enuff to get to talking with Vibrant Performance for some prototyping. After about a month of playing e-mail tag, i finally dropped off my car this morning to Vibrant.
They will be doing a test fit for a set of headers w/flex pipe, and also some re-work to their existing front strut brace. I met with Dino Jr. and Derek this morning, and i have to say that these guys are realli great to chat it up with. I spent about 30 or so min alone just chit chatting with Dino Himself. They have a set of headers ready to bolt on, their pretty confident that the one from the ford focus will just directly bolt up.
To my knowledge once their done fitment and such, i think it will be around march/ish when the first production pieces will start to roll out for retail.
Im realli pumped to be helping out a canadian company for our cars, this is whats exciting me the most, to aid in development for more things for the mazda3.
Ill do my best to keep you guys updated on the progress of this in this thread.

which headers are they trying to fit on the 3 (not familiar with any of the focus ones) 4-1? 4-2-1? i know it\'s early but estimated gains (or gains the focus gets)?
bubba1983
12-13-2005, 12:14 PM
i can\'t tell u which ones they will be putting on, i was too buzzed from talking with dino i never realli payed much attention to teh header when it was on teh desk, but from the pic i took with my phone, i believe its a 4-2-1
my guess they can\'t realli estimate power gains untill they do their dyno runs, so realli, time will tell...

I know nothing about bolting headers to cars so i\'m not too sure what you guys are talking about 4-1 or 4-2 or something like that. But I want to know how much would these babies go for (approx)? As i said i know nothing about headers on cars so i won\'t know how much they would cost for a focus or any other car.

bubba, thanks for initiating the work with Vibrant on Headers for the 3.
i\'m sure you\'re aware of this thread on M3F about the Draxas Header fitment issues on the sedan and hatch (http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=21957.0)...does Vibrant know so that they won\'t make the same \"mistake\"?
also, there\'s a CEL eliminator that\'ll have to be sold prefereably with the header. any mention of that?
Looking forward to seeing the work in progress :D
btw, let\'s hope they don\'t do to your car what they did to mazda3team\'s car when they tested the sedan exhaust.

they know about the fitment issue with the drxxas setup, and hope to eliviate that problem!
im by far not a technical person, so i put my trust into vibrant at what they do....thats my comment on the CEL eliminator, sorry can\'t be of much help.

worry about winter tires first ;)
headers help the flow of exhaust gases.. read more here (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question172.htm)
4-1 and 4-2-1 is just how the pipe is shaped.. 4-1 goes from 4 pipes into 1.. 4-2-1 goes from 4 pipes to 2 then to 1.. do a google image search :)
4-1 is designed for mid-top end, while the 4-2-1 is designed for low-mid range boost in power..
i would assume to make the best use of the headers you should get an exhaust to help the exhaust gases escape more freely.. a very quick/rough search revealed focus headers for 250-350USD

Wow thanks a lot for the brief info. I kno how it looks like just do\'nt know too much about them and how they work or stuff like that. And I\'m soon to be on my way for winters :)
These other stuff i\'ll worry after winter. But anyhow thx for the info. ;)
A few years back I went with my buddy and his sir civic to test fit some headers at vibrant, we met with Justin who no longer works there and Dino Jr. At the time they were just getting into the performance stuff and developing some proto-types to take to SEMA. This was when they had either just finished or were about to finish the CRX drag car. My friend got the proto-type headers and full exhaust that they were developing for his troubles. They even used his car for the cover of their performance parts book. He was so jacked. So I can imagine how you feel. Can wait to see some pics.
Don\'t forget swapping the factory cat out will make the car off-road (ie. NOT street legal). Just giving the necessary warning. ;)

i already talked to them about off-roat use.
They don\'t plan on making it for off road use only, cause that narrows their market down significantly, they want to be able to have a streel legal system to market to pair up with their cat-back exhaust system (which i already have on teh car)

to make it street legal, they\'ll have to incorporate a catalytic converter into the header (reducing flow quite significantly compared to no cat).
The stock exhaust manifold contains the \"main\" catalytic that the ECU takes its oxygen sensor readings from. The reason why the Draxas header needs a CEL eliminator is because it doesn\'t have a cat; which will cause the o2 sensor readings to be off, thus throwing the CEL.
this will be interesting.

UPDATE
thought i would share the e-mail i jus got from Dino.
Everything bolted up perfectly. The only tiny problem is the location of one of the O2 Sensor fittings but it\'s not an unworkable problem. It\'s not in the most ideal spot for installation but we were able to work with it. We\'ll change that O2 fitting location for production.
I go pick it up tomorrow morning. Im sure he\'ll give me the big debriefing and such!

what?
holy my ears are ringing....quite a nasty drone bellow at 140km/hour, haha fills the entire cabin.
Im charging my batt\'s for my digi cam and will take some audio clips for you guys tonight....
initiall impression, much greater throttle responce. You notice it immediately...
pulls EVENLY thru the rpm range from my first initiall takeoff in the cold leaving vibrant, none of that 3K urge of power...but ill have to test that out again when the buzz calms down...
On the highway, when you downshift and punch in 4th, LOUD>...it puts a distinct raspyness to the exhaust, it sounds like its goign to bite you or hurt you.
On teh lower rpm scale...again, LOUD, haha, city driving will be tricky.
Cruising at 100 hasn\'t realli changed much for sound....
anything else???

It seems to me Vibrant has started selling their Mazda3 Headers for the 2.0 and 2.3!
I found both models on JRPONLINE.com
Maybe Adam can get vibrant to cut us a deal/GB :D!

they\'ve had part numbers for the header in their 06 flyer before my test fit...so they knew they wanted it done..

Wow, that\'s a lot of money for headers, but JRP isn\'t exactly known for being cheap. Who knows, perhaps other retailers will have slightly more reasonable pricing.

all i can really say, is thats WAY over the pricepoint that i was estimated...

~$800 for headers doesn\'t seem out of place. Until you\'ve got x gazillion different companies making them such as for a Civic say, that seems like a reasonable price point.
However, the gains seem a little low? I\'ve never had aftermarket headers before, but would\'ve thought there\'d be +15whp. Maybe a good I/H/E combo will yield good gains...
Kevin@nextmod
02-19-2006, 09:17 PM
Ohhh I can get a price quote for those headers. I think i can get them cheaper. The store i\'m getting the prokits from gets stuff from jrp. If we have a GI then i can get price quotes for however many we want/need.

well.. if you order them from CVR. You pay no tax or shipping or duties and can pick them up from Vibrant...like we do for their exhuast systems. And exchange is great right now.
A Draxas Header is under $500 CDn.. So $800 is too high anyway..
