Ok this happened earlier today, I was browsing the net and the PC just shut down. I did not notice a surge or anything abnormal in the house. I turn on the fugger and all I get is a glowing HD light and a flashing system power light. There is no POST, no beeps, no monitor signal...nothing. I cannot even turn it off unless I unplug it. The power supply fan and cpu fan however are running fine! I poped open the case and a MEM_LED led on the MB was flashing Orange (later found out that only means not to take out the mem when the pc is on lol....so I dont think that has any significance) . I unpluged the PC and reseated the memory and even played around with just 1 of the set and then the other, different banks, and even without any mem and i dont even get a beep out of the fugger. The HD/CD/DVD/Floppy are motionless no matter what I do. I searched the net for this issue and there seems to be a couple of these instances but no resolution to be found. I cleared the cmos by just taking out the battery for 15 mins but that has only gotten rid of the flashing MEM_LED on the mobo, same problem persists.

P4 2.6
256MB + 512MB Ram from same manuf.
40GB HD
300W PS
and using onboard video

Similar case:

Same case + same result after clearing cmos

LOL so it has to be either the PS (even though it powers things up it still might be a gonner), mobo or cpu.....i really hate I am not getting a POST/BEEP......if it were only that simple

+There were no funky plastic burning smells at all...

bah....so any suggestions before I start replacing things that dont need replacing

same happened to my other computer... fried almost everything, burned all drive motors. only salvageable parts: cpu, memory and video card. lucky it was old athlon 1.01Ghz. I still got it back up with a new power supply, got a m-b/w onboard sound from a friend, had an aux HD, took a CD drive from a third comp i have running.

i didn\'t smell any burning either.

Could be the PS, that same scenario happened to my comp.

if you do that, adn it still don\'t do anything, bye bye mobo

A similar thing happened to a PC at work. The IT guy came down, replaced a few parts over a couple of days (trial and error) and reported that the CPU had died...rare, but it does happen.

i just took off the heatsink and the cpu looks good, pure green across the bottom and no browning whatsoever (it however still might be pooched)

ill replace the mobo tommorow and see

If you need a 300W PS, I have spare one here you can have for $5. Its an ACER.

here are a couple of suggestions off the top of my head..

1) take out the video card and try to boot up.. listen for the 3 beeps (I think/hope this is standard on all MBs but I\'m not sure if it is or not).. if u hear it then it\'s not the video card.. if u don\'t then it COULD be ur video card..

2) try unplugging ur HD (power and ide cable) and turn it on.. if u see something on the screen then it\'s ur HD..

if u don\'t see any changes then it could be ur MB..

good luck and I hope this helps..

yeah this board is all INTEGRATED, video/sound/lan/nic which is fine for browsing the net and dl....i dont play games so its good enough

i called infonec and 1 other store, and while they do have the board on their site, none of them have it in stock, and state that their supplier doesn\'t either....while I think that they can\'t be bothered with making 5$ profit :p

*****************
i searched at work for maybe an hour and even now at home and cant find this board in the GTA...so maybe someone on here with master searching skills could locate one for me lol

either the
GA-8S661FXMP-RZ
http://www.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/Products/Products_8S661FXMP-RZ.htm
or
GA-8S661FXM (which is the older model and one that I had in my pc)
http://www.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/Products/Products_GA-8S661FXM.htm

getting desperate here and would rather not go for another board...but if i cant locate one i will probably go ABIT and reformat the drive

JUST an UPDATE

PC is fixed :) , poped the new board in and everything booted fine, no need for a reinstall or anything drastic (that is why i wanted this exact board and chipset in the first place, otherwise I would have gone for a better board)

On a plus note, the cpu heat sink had a thermal goo pad..blah.... cleaned everything up and applied arctic juice

i went through a bit of hassle to get that mobo, i saw about 5 sites for mississauga with that board advertised but when I called them they all stated that they didnt have any in stock nor did their suppliers. Infonec (mississauga) initially said that as well, so i called their new HQ office in Markham and sure enough after 5 hrs they called back and sourced the board from a side supplier. I just asked them to ship it to the sauga location and picked it up 1 day later (thurs) in mississauga. All in all Infonec provided great service!!!
