This morning was drizzly, damp, and foggy, and when I started my car, I heard a squeal sound just before the engine started. I am pretty sure it was a slipping belt, but have never experienced this before. Should I be concerned? Isn’t the belt self-adjusting so it shouldn’t be loose? I have less than 24k, so it can’t be worn already?
Thanks in advanced.

I just noticed a similar sound when I start my car, but i only notice it when the car is cold. Not sure what it can be.

The squeal you are talking about is even happens to my 06 it seems if the conditions are just right the pulleys will collect condensation as when the engine was shut off it was warm.when its starts up the belt may slip due to water droplets the only reason I know this is because it happened to me twice so i checked it one morning and sure enough there was some very minor condensation,I checked with the dealership and they said the same the tension was fine.

another major cause of a slipping belt is if the weather is too cold and the rubber will freeze causing the belt to spin until the rubber warms up

I heard the same squeal on start up this morning and I instantly thought of this thread.

Thanks for the responses. I hear the squeal 3-times in a row, while it was wet, not after that when it was dry, and even this morning when it was raining. I took it to Mazda for an oil change, and inquired about the squeal. They did check and didn’t find any problem. Here was what was printed on the invoice. “Check and report squealing on startup. Could not duplicate customer concern at this time – some brake squeal is normal.â€ÂÂ
I will monitor the problem and see how it goes.

Took my car into Avante today to have them look at two issues:
1) Squeal on start up last week (after rain)
2) Really loud ticking/hissing sound coming from engine. Lasted 15 min (after heavy rain Friday night)
Unfortunately they could not replicate the problems and recommended that I leave the car overnight to have it diagnosed properly. The tech did inspect the car and found everything okay. I guess everything is on record so should anything happen to my car, I should be covered...I hope? :hoho

I get this squealing alot mainly in the winter. I have found that using a belt dressing that you can pick up from Can tire. I let the car run and try to coat both sides of the belt well.
Seems to help. The squeal isn\'t there very often or at all. My family has used it on all our cars and we haven\'t had any issues.

Candle wax also helps eliminate that squeal.
