I went with both. According to them when you get rust protection from them its never suppose to rust (and so say\'s the other guys). But if it does you can yell at them \"mazda\" , as to yelling to the \"other\" rust proofing guys out there. But what it comes down to is your personal preference.

Rust Proofing - NO WAY. They outsource it anyways and then charge you the \"middle man\" fee. Don\'t be lazy and go to RustCheck or Krown to do it every year. You get an annual application which pretty much guarantees your car won\'t rust. Unlike the dealership rustproofing that gives you a \"visual inspection\" each year.
Extended Warranty - MAYBE. Depends how much you drive, but for more money you get piece of mind.
Look carefully at the warranty for the rust proofing from both the dealer and the aftermarket places. There is only certain coverage with many loop holes for them to get out of repairing your car if it does rust. As far as extended warrant goes, it all boils down to how much you use the car and how long you inteand on keeping the it. If you plan on having it for longer than the existing warranty you might want to purchase an extended package.

a can of this stuff (http://www.corrosionfree.com/automotive.html) goes for $9.99 at Canadian Tire. pick up one, or 2, and do it yourself if you wanna go cheap. ideally you\'d want to spray the seams on the hood, trunk, doors, fender...as well as any metal you feel might be susceptible to rust.
you can also spray the undercarriage with this stuff...it doesn\'t drip for days like most oil-based rust-proofing chemicals. do this yearly and you\'re saving yourself a good chunk of change.
most of the rust protection warranties at any outlet aren\'t worth the paper they\'re written on. surface rust is not their problem (which is really the most unsightly kinda of rust) and they will only cover rust-through. so you don\'t lose anything by doing it yourself.
as for extended warranty, it all depends on how much you drive. i got it since i knew i was going to be driving a lot and wanted to at least be covered until the end of the loan. (which is always a good thing since you don\'t want to pay for major repairs while having to make a payment on the car).

Just for info sake - have you or anyone that you know succeeded in making a claim for car rust from either a dealer or outside party like Rust Check ?

I\'m banging my head..... which added protection warranty for those took it... the comphrensive or major components??? I\'m thinking of the 72mths or 160k km since I commute from Mississauga to Pickering everyday.... I\'m hoping to keep the car for as long as I can lol... Can you purchase it without having it on the bill of sale within a year at same charge?? please advise if it\'s worth it or not... :)

Do NOT get the \'Major Component\' Warranty. The Comprehensive includes all of the Major plus more..
The Major Component will be about $40 or $50 cheaper to buy but it is more limited and has a $50 deductible. so, the first time you use it, you could have got the Comprehensive.
As for buying it within the yr or 20,000km, you have that option but the price may be different when you buy it, in fact if you go over the 20k of the year, expect to pay a surcharge as well ($5/1000 km on the car..)
More in this thread. (http://torontomazda3.com/forum/read.php?TID=3065)

Thanks so much Biz and others!! That\'s what I thought should wait until the end of the first year or within 20k km. Why it was tough to decide I have to commute about 100k km/day and approx 500km/week to work so I\'m figuring approx 25k km/yr if wait till 3 years is up to buy the extended warranty then it\'s surcharge plus the price of extended warranty, correct?? wow.. that would be a hefty price for the extended warranty when 3 years is up but again it\'s better than paying at beginning for nothing. I\'m definitely not buying the extended warranty when I buy the car, will wait till the year is up. Also, the deductible is zero, correct?? when they serviced your car?? ANy suggestions, where or should I stick with dealership to get my car serviced... Thanks guys.. ;)

Mazda would prefer you do this, then Mazda\'s Warranty Dept doesn\'t have to dish out a rental vehicle if you are having Warranty work done.
The factory warranty does not include \'replacement vehicle allowance\' but it is included in the Extended Warranty.

Keep in mind when you buy it close to the end of your factory bumper to bumper, the price will not be the same as today.. I have been with Mazda for 4+ years and I have seen the price go up 4 times.

I\'ve had my car 2 years...2 winters.. The only slight rust I see is in the back of the car. The rear bumper supports. A couple little metal brackets. Everything else is still has the factory black coating.
If you wanted to spray some stuff on yourself, buy a can and spray around in that area.
I\'m not sure what the car will look like in 5 years. But so far, looks fine.

I just recently noticed that I have rust on the rear wheelwells in the seam where the bumper meets the rear fender. My 3 is still under factory warranty till November. Would this be repairable under the warranty?

I think you are better off doing the underspray if you're so inclined, but any well maintained car that gets a few coats of wax a year shouldn't show any rust in the five years that the warranty is good for anyways even if you hardly maintain your car... in which case why'd you buy a new car and a warranty to not keep it up?
I manage a non automotive business.... warranties make companies alot of money, you be the judge. if you have the 1600 just put it in an investment that way the money is working for you rather than a company. Odds are for the first three years 100% of any issue would be covered by the factory warranty which means so far you have paid for one really expensive rental car... besides if it is any service of significance the dealer although not required too will likely give you a rental car anyways.
So now you've invested 1600 for 3 years which at a decent return will be worth $2200 (@10%).... you've jut made $600 and since warranty is a luck of the draw kind of thing if you happen to not need any ECP work for the 5 years you would have $2600. Thats enough to pay for a pretty major repair should you need to use it, and if you don't you wouldn't have lost 1600 when the warranty expires vs. if you luck out and have no major repairs in the timeframe you walk out with $2600 and an grand that you didn't have before
despire our intentions when buying, consumers hardly ever go full term on cars any more. 3 years is average, 5 is long and 7-10 is virtually unheard of... unless you are commited to a 5+ year ownership cycle and operate on a strict budget where you can't deal with unforeseen small out of pocket repair bills i think you are better off not getting either warranty
