That\'s a good point... has anyone seen any info regarding Mazdaspeed CAI\'s and the dreaded CEL?
I hope that the Mazdaspeed parts will be much more compatible with Mazda vehicles than the rest of the aftermarket upgrades. But then again, the MS brochure lists the CAI as an \"Orange Accessory\", i.e. \"sold as-is without any warranty of any kind\" and \"not to be operated on public highways\"... :sarc

And speaking of the brochure, it mentions that the CAI is \"polished and powder coated aluminum tubing\". Is there a selection of the powder-coat colors or does it only come in \'plain aluminum\'?

Don’t look at me – I’m just a newbie when it comes to performance upgrades… :D

But from what I’ve been reading up on CAI’s, most of CEL’s are caused by poor MAF sensor positioning, which in turn can cause abnormal readings. In the extreme cases the sensor might be registering either zero airflow reading at WOT or massive flow at idle – both can cause the ECU to assume that there is something wrong with the throttle and throw a CEL at you.
...or so does the Internet lore claim :sarc

That actually begs the question – are there any MS CAI’s installed on 3s right now, i.e. “gray imports” and such? Or is the rest of the World still waiting on their CAI’s just like us up in the Great North?

swales

In the last 10 years of owning pretty much every brand of CAI\'s out there, I\'ve NEVER had a CEL on any of my cars because of it.

if CAI is purchased when the car is purchased
is different than
if CAI is purchased after and installed by mazda,

it seems similar to me!
and that is what i understood b4, but now i was a little confused
because of the 2 examples put forth when i thought of an extra case
i applied it to the model in hand, and it seemed that it did not
fit perfectly either way . . .

Could be a ZC DOHC motor. Pretty stout little motor that\'s fairly inexpensive. Keep in mind that if it is a ZC there aren\'t a lot of engine mods available like there are for D and B series motors.

Personally I would go for a D16 before a ZC.....tons more go fast goodies available for cheap (not to mention spare parts just in case). Of course if you can afford it go for the B16 or some sort of an LS/VTEC set-up for serious power down the road.

If you go the D16 route, you could get the motor and a turbo kit all for about $2K....all you\'d need to pay on top is install (unless you can do that on your own).

Say no to the ZC, very underpowered with no mods. B16A is a great motor for a 91 model civic, if its a 93-95 Civic i\'d go with GSR or if possible ITR.

so its an intake we are talking about...:p

Hey Joe, I have to ask a question that has been asked a few times already in this thread.

I know it\'s one year warranty, or I believe you said if the car was new it came with the full 3 year or 5 year warranty.

I was wondering if there is a grace period on what is considered new, or if that\'s done as soon as you drive off the lot?

Just wanted to know since my car is a week old, if I got this now or when you get the next batch, if it would only be the one year or 3 year. If it were the 3 year then I\'d think a lot harder on this and make a decision asap.

Thanks!

Oh, and could you tell me what the installation cost would be at the dealership?

I was just informed that any Mazdaspeed parts carry their own warranty which I will post on a sticky.

So regardless of when you purchased the Mazdaspeed parts you have to go by the warranty guidelines. No 3yr./80,000km even when purchased at time of delivery.

Labour for the intake is 1.5hrs. $132.30. You could always do the install yourself.

Finally found some time this morning to head down to MoT to pick up the CAI and install it. Correct me if I’m wrong, but this is quite possibly the first installed MS CAI in the GTA area... not that I’m claming \"First Post\" bragging rights or anything :p

I didn’t bother with any pictures and in-depth walk-thoughts, as the forums are already filled to the brim with those, so just a couple of comments:

The installation was quite easy – about an hour and a half, including jacking up the car and taking the wheel off. Except for a rather odd Imperial-sized :sarc Allen key needed for the MAF sensor bolts, no special tools were required. I also didn’t find the infamous \"Third Bolt of Death\" on the lower resonator all that hard – once I managed to get my hands into the opening a small box wrench did the job quite well.

The only oversight I think is the position of the \"breather tube\" (which I think is for the PCV). You need to push the CAI quite far into the silicone pipe for this breather tube to line up with PCV line it’s supposed to be connected to. Then again, I believe this is the only CAI to have a PCV connection on the first place, is it not?

The sound is quite nice, quite similar to the rest of the CAI’s, I’m sure. Very subtle at low RPM, low throttle, but produces a very respectable roar when you get heavy on the pedal. Seems like a perfect mod for anyone looking for better engine ‘feedback’ and a slight performance increase, but with out all the draw backs of an exhaust. Cruising in 5th at 3~4k RPM on a highway the CAI almost sounds stock, where as a Cat-back already starts to drone ...but to each his own.

On one of the pages in this thread the guy from M3F installed one on his 2.0.

The only thing you have to worry about though is warranty. The kit is made for the 2.3 not the 2.0. So you would basically be buying the CAI with no warranty.

Hi Flip,

This is really good news. Can I pick mine on Saturday (that is if they do come in...)? I guess it is too late to schedule an install for Saturday at MoT for the intake if indeed it will arrive?:(

Yeah we\'ll have to wait and see. All I know right now is that the CAI\'s are coming to me it\'s just a matter of when.

Not to sure about a Saturday install. It get\'s pretty crazy here on Saturday\'s.

No worries, just let us know if they show up and I\'ll pay you a visit on Saturday just to pick it up.:)

Joe,

If there are more prepaid buyers than available CAI\'s, how long would the wait be for the next shipment? Or is this not the case at this time?

I think there is a waiting list. Regardless if you paid it off already, you\'ll probably have to wait your turn. =P

I\'m only saying this because if you do get the cai, I\'ll be hanging in the dust. =D

Anyway joe, I\'ll probably set up an apt on monday or tuesday with the service dept to get this baby installed. Thanks for the updates.

Regardless who installs it (you, dealer, shop, friend, monkey, etc), its not very likely to affect your insurance. However, if your car is stolen and the part is damaged/taken/car is not recovered, and you don\'t tell your insurance company you installed this aftermarket part, it\'s not likely they will reimburse you. Best thing to do is call another insurance company and find out by talking to a broker.

ummmm crap. I think I pulled a Justin.

Does this intake fit on a 2006 Mazda 3 5 Spd?

Edit: Only reason I ask is because the installation instructions says it fits 04-05 Mazda 3 2.3L.

I had the same concern and this is what Joe came across...

\"throttle body part numbers for 04 and 06 and they\'re different. The only parts that are the same are the intake hose, MAF, and the resonator.\"

Now go and make it fit!! I\'m going in tomorrow to have the service dept install it, I\'ll let you know if there are any complications.

Hey guys,

Picked mine up today... but mine looks like it has a dent in it... or is it supose to be there. On the end where the maf sits and the hose connectects the end looks more like a D with the flat side of the D bent in. I dont have a web cam on me till tomorrow but if anyone else\'s is like this let me know.

Paul.

It was a pain in the ass to get that lower resonator box out. If you are going to do a DIY job, you\'ve been warned. We (my friend and I) had to use an air wrench to reach up there and get the bolt out.

However, once you have gotten past that part, its smooth sailing.

Just finished DrunknFoo\'s CAI install on his 06. The only difference between the 04/05 models to the 06 model\'s MAP sensor is not located in the same area.

So basically 1 less sensor to bolt onto the intake pipe.

Hey,

I took it back to the dealership and they said yes it was a dent in it... They gave me another one, but it still seemed to be ever so slightly dented... but definately not as much as before. I think this may be a manufacturing defect or how they ship.

Paul.
