With gas prices climbing I was entertaining the thought of buying a scooter just to go to and from work, maybe 10km both ways, all on city streets. I was thinking of picking up a Honda Ruckus...

Whaddaya think?

Weird, I was thinking the exact same thing.

We got a flyer with all the new Vespa\'s and to my surprise, the missus actually agreed with me...!

:D

I don\'t know about the newer Vespas, there\'s just something missing on them. I love the older Vespas, like the ones in Quadraphenia or something. Maybe it\'s just the hidden \"Mod\" in me.

I believe you still need your motorcycle license for these, correct me if I\'m wrong. What sort of mileage would you get on that? How much for insurance?

Yes you need an M License (http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/classes.htm) (can be conditional) to drive one.

How much does something like that cost? You\'d have to figure in the cost of the scooter, increased insurance, maintenence, etc. and see if it still make sense financially. Also, would you still take it if it were raining out?

I was considering the same thing but because of the free parking!!!. I pay $8/day, that monthly cost alone would cover a scooter and most of a motorcycle. I\'ve been fighting the urge for a motorcycle for the last 5 years, this doesn\'t help.:D

BTW, if the scooter is 50cc or under you don\'t need a an M license. I\'ve had my M since 87 so I am not worried.

Oh Lord, I don\'t even understand the new rules regarding low speed motorcycles and I work in the office that made that new rule!!!

You pay 15 a day? Damn! What area do you work?

I just heard it on CTV news last week, they did a scooter special and said 50cc and under no license required and the best thingh is the free parking. Though I can\'t imagine riding anything under 50cc.

There is a licence required, but it\'s not a moped licence and it\'s not a full M licence, it\'s called a low speed motorcycle licence (diplacement up to 49cc, speed limited to 60km/h, I believe, and special plates are required). It looks like an M you driver\'s licence but the condition for the low speed motorcycle use only appears on the back of the card. Obviously it restricts you to low speed motorcycles, but it will be up to the police to enforce that.

So, after you factor in all of the costs of acquiring, operating and maintaining said vehicle, would you still be saving money? That is on the assumption you keep your 3. I can see it making a lot of fiscal sense if you get rid of the car and go scooter alone, but don\'t see the benefit of keeping the car and getting a scooter just to save gas.

majic, do the math man and post up some figures.

w/o crunching too many numbers and rounding stuff up.. you can do 100km on 2L of gas (this is a PURE guess, 5th of what you can do with a mazda3) 10km trip times 2 is 20km a day times 200 working days a year = 4000km

now.. mazda3 would cost you 4000km/100km=40 times 10L = 400L times a buck a liter = 4 large
scooter a 5th of that so 8 bills.. 3200 saved BUT.. add extra isnurance costs, factor in that out of the 200 days you can do maybe 150 or even LESS due to weather and quite quickly you\'re down to maybe 2500 saved.. and this is based on 2L/100km fuel economy :p so you would need at least 2 years to recoup the purchase costs..

my 3cents :)

you forgot my crazy $15 per day parking at $5,400 for the year vs. $0 for parking a scooter anywhere in the city.

that makes 1yr to recap losses, plus after talking to the salesman, the stock speed is 60km, however Aprilia Italy provided him with the codes to remove the speed limiter, plus he is throwing in a performance exhaust, rear damper set-up and something else so that i will be running this puppy 90-100km\'s per hour.

SCARY FAST ON A SCOOTER......:p

LMAO!!! i park for free so i didn\'t really take that into account.. :p

don\'t forget tho.. riding a scooter is like banging a phat chick.. might seem cool at the time but when you really think about it you wouldn\'t want to be seen doing the deed ;) :p

What la la land are u living in?

Dat\'s like saying broli\'s mom is hot. She may be a great bang for the buck (figuratively and literally), but she ain\'t hot.
