Looking for something like this:

Future Shop Bose Speaker Station (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10071945&logon=&lan gid=EN)

http://www.futureshop.ca/multimedia/products/large/10071945.jpg

Really not an audiophile, but want something good; be great if it were less than the $400 Bose system.

No computer in the room where it would be located.

Any recommendations?

Any of the Altec Lansing speakers would make a good choice. I have their IM3 speakers, their smallest ones, on my desk beside me at work and it can get quite loud. ;)

agreed.. i don\'t have an ipod but i got these (http://www.pricegrabber.com/p__Altec_Lansing_IM3c_iPod_Portable_Audio_System_B lack,__17631203/sort_type=bottomline) for my boss while in the states.. nice tones but lacking the THUMP.. i guess that\'s what you get with small drivers.. also.. you gotta read the small print closely to see which ipods (3rd 4th nano mini etc) they will accomodate.. i remember that was the biggest PITA when i was looking for the set of speakers for him..

There\'s always the JBL On Time ($299)
http://a248.e.akamai.net/7/248/2041/1036/store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/th416lla_125.jpg

or the Klipsch iGroove ($329)
http://a248.e.akamai.net/7/248/2041/1036/store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/tf189lla_125.jpg

or the Altec Lansing iM7 ($299)
http://a248.e.akamai.net/7/248/2041/1036/store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/td059zma_125.jpg

Personally, I would go with either of the last two as I am not a big fan of the sound quality of the JBL speakers.

I bought the Klipsch iGroove for my Dad last xmas. The sound from these things are quite nice. All types of music sounded good on it. I liked it better than the Bose one after listening to the two. I didn\'t like the Bose\'s docking design... left the ipod quite flimsy. Never seen the Altec one so I have no opinion on it :)

I recall seeing it at Costco as well now. I don\'t remember the price but I \"think\" it was $299.

Two thumbs up for the iGroove.

Does the fact that the Bose is on sale at BestBuy for $319 (reg. $399) change any opinions?

Thanks, but eBay\'s blocked at work, so I can\'t check it out (if someone wants to summarize the results for me... :D). In any event, I never buy electronics off of eBay, especially if it\'s a U.S. vendor. By the time you factor in shipping, taxes, customs brokerage, I\'d have less stress buying locally.

I\'m with majic, Bose sucks, but that\'s besides the point.

Give it a listen and if you like it, buy it. Just be aware, it the Bose unit and Klipsch units are both rather large.

i have bought many electronic things from ebay and saved alot of coin

the secret is to have the person on the other end put that the value of the item is like 25 dollars

and u wont get taxed as much

just a little hint for people who dont know

I\'ve got the same set on my office desk and think they are perfect for how I use them. However, this set is only comes with dock adaptors for the older generations of units (ie: pre-g5 & nano only).

Junk But Loud ....... ;)

I had a similar decision to make a while back.

After listening to all of the above I wasn\'t particulalry blown away with any of them.

Instead I opted for a slightly less practical hookup to my Marantz 2325 and use a powered docking cradle to connect to Aux input on the receiver. That way I still get the great sound of my home setup without spending $300+ on something I can only use with an iPod....!

My 30GB video iPod sits perfectly fine in it. I don\'t use an adapter. I wouldn\'t worry too much about it unless you\'re in the habit of moving the speakers around while your iPod is connected.

WuD, here\'s another Klipsch model...the iFi.

It has 200w and it\'s out of your specified price range. :(

If money was not an issue I would get the iFi... it has received many good reviews.. and you can spread the speakers around the room which makes it even better.

ifi looks great, but really want to keep it in the $300 range (if not lower).

It\'s all a matter of brand recognition and marketing.

Why would I say that.....because on the whole Bose equipment is very, very overpriced and typically sounds like crap. The only good thing Bose has ever done is clever marketing/branding.

I fully agree with that advice. Unfortunately, I\'m too deep in the hole to follow that advice, so I\'m spending my way into oblivion. If you gotta go down, go down in flames baby! In blaze of glory!

Haven\'t decided yet. Want to go see and hear the products live first.

You and me, down in flames!!!!

I\'d suggest going to the Apple store at Yorkdale or the Eaton Centre for an audition.
