Oh yeah, that\'s great if it\'s true.......the lack of a retractable hardtop has always been an issue with this car IMO.

I wonder if a set of golf clubs will still fit in the trunk?
Anyone want to buy a 2004 Mazda 3? ;)

That would be a first for Mazda.

Wonder if the retractible hardtop would weigh more than the standard ragtop? If so, that\'d be a bummer. Now you have a complex and costly motor for the top as well.
The Miata has always been about being light and affordable. Not saying it\'s terrible (I think a retractible hardtop is great), it\'s just that the car gets heavier, slower and more costly.

Looks nice, does it come in a Mazdaspeed version?

Look what I found:
HIROSHIMA, Japan, June 20, 2006â€â€Mazda Motor Corporation will use the 2006 British International Motor Show for its global reveal of the new Mazda MX-5, now equipped with a power retractable hard top roof ** - and the regional debut of the Mazda BT-50 one-ton pickup truck.
The British International Motor Show will be held in London from Tuesday, July 18, through Sunday, July 30, 2006.
Featuring a new, unique power retractable hard top roof, this is an all-new addition to the third-generation Mazda MX-5 which has been celebrated globally since 2005. This new Mazda MX-5 model provides a unified sense of driving exhilaration, ready to spread the fun of lightweight sports cars in diverse and distinct new ways.

Note the retractable top will not affect the trunk space at all.. it is said to go directly behind the seats and in front of the \'trunk\'

lol
the miata is the best selling convertible of ALL TIME because:
1. fun to drive
2. CHEAP
lol with the added weight, like mentioned earlier, will it still be as fun to drive? it should stronger though with the top up
secondly, hard top convertible? how much will this cost? lol the limited 3rd gen mx-5 already cost 35k. will this actually go over 40? i forget what price, but the vw eos is supposed to be the cheapest hardtop convertible so far, but then agian, it has the potential to seat 4.
i love the idea of the hardtop convertible. but it effects this car in the 2 ways it appealed to people. for me, im mainly worried about price lol. stupid car =p

Another reminder of why Mazda continues to be my main car company of choice now and in the future.
This is too cool!:)

Any chance that they\'ll offer both style of covertible tops? I know it\'s a long shot and not very cost effective, but I could have sworn that one of the articles I read on it hinted that might be the case, though I can\'t find it anymore.
Mazda promo 2 minute video on the new mx-5. It shows how the roof folds up and down. Kinda cool to watch :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAGkOUMhq5Q&NR

I Still say it\'s Gay!! Who in their right mind wants to drive arouond in a car that has a half open roof ???
dumb....
Why didn\'t they make it so it fully opens...and retracts into the back?? Mazda missed the boat on this one...

I think the picture is meant to show the retractable hard roof in action. Obviously the roof goes down all the way right?

I\'ve always like the Miata, but for the last few years, it\'s been ridiculously priced. When it first came out, wow, that was a good deal.

I was watching one of those Motoring2006 shows over the week-end and they did a quick blurb about the new hardtop, saying that in Mazda\'s press release they claim this top will not reduce trunk space at all when down.

That\'s my understanding as well. The trunk is fully available in the MX-5 as the hardtop folds behind the seats. You can\'t do that in the poorly concieved Solstice and that trunk has a large bulge in the middle which makes it useless. Score once more to Mazda!
