Is it true that Rogers bans the use of BitComet or BT usage? and I heard Bell Sympatico allows that?

Not true. I\'m using rogers right now and i get about 80-100k/sec with bitcomet. But i use rogers extreme so not sure if its the same for hi speed.

afaik, rogers just blocks a BT specific (default) port.. and you can get around it by changing the port of the BT client.. keep in mind your 60GB/mth cap.. :sarc

Thanks, so what range of ports should I be using to get around it?
BTW, the BT situation for me right now is that the speed would freeze at the range of 1kb~10kb per sec. It happened at a sudden about 6 months ago, and before I used to get the speed as Pearly said, and I\'ve heard from friends that Rogers did it eversince.

You\'ll just have to find the right port to use.

It\'s not really the port per se. For the last few months, Rogers was throttling any BT activity. The only way to get around it was to use the header encryption option in the BT clients. Even then, my speeds were really crappy.
A few weeks ago though, Rogers supposedly upped the speeds of all connections, and I\'m no longer getting throttled.

Has anyone actually hit this 60GB maximum? do they charge you by the GB afterwards?

the first time you go over 60gb they\'ll send you a letter of warning.
after that when you go over 60gb again they\'ll drop you to a slow speed and resume highspeed at the beginning of next month.
VPN is virtual private network. If you use bt thru VPN, roger cannot do anything to throttle your bt.
you can sign up 4 free beta accounts at http://secureix.com/
buh make sure you don\'t do stuff like check your online bank accounts while connected ;)

When residing in Toronto, I have Rogers Hi-Speed Extreme Internet. No filters thusfar. I have run BitComet, LimeWire and all sorts of Torrent and P2P programs without issues.
Same goes with Bell Sympatico High Speed. Haven\'t had any issues, except sending files through MSN sometimes can be extremely slow.

Thanks guys for all the inputs. I\'ll try to see if it\'s my OS problem rather than the ISP.

Rogers or any ISP company monitors \"uploads\" and \"downloads\" on your IP. They will send you warning letter if you exceed your limit. And if you ignore that warning and continues to surpass your limit, you might be banned!
i have rogers extreme. when they first throttled BT, i changed port to 1720 which worked amazing for a few months, but recently, that\'s throttled as well and using encryption doesn\'t seem to help either...
crappy
On Roger\'s High-speed, not extreme. I live in Markham, near Markham Rd. and Steeles Ave. area. Using Azureus with header encryption on and port 1755. If you\'re on a router, you\'ll need to open that port up for your computer.
Recent download of three 4GB sized images, that was average. It\'s hit 470kB/s on and off, max.

EDIT: Win2K, P3 933 (shaddap) :p

400+ kb/s!? I\'ve never had that in my life! OK, let me sort this out, it\'s kind of complicated, so use the AZUREUS program, and what is the \"header encryption thing\" about? then turn to port 1755, and i am NOT on a router means no extra works needs to be done, right?
:D forgive me i am kind of dump on computer.
Azureus and Encryption details (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,15458750?hilite=azureus+encryption)
Basically put, Rogers has equipment that monitors the ports for the kind of data that is passing through. Unencrypted Torrent transfers will have a label stating \"I\'m Torrent data!\" and Rogers will put a speed limit on that data transfer. When you encrypt the data, the label becomes \"gjaouhtoij\" and Rogers doesn\'t have much of a clue as to the data being Torrent and it just allows it through at whatever speed.
Do note that that 400+ kB/s was actually one of a few times I\'ve ever reached that speed. Uusally I\'ll get around 200kB/s max. The overall speed depends on many factors including the other seeders/peers, the traffic on your branch of the ISP network, etc.
I capped my upload to 15kB/s. When I set it to 0 (unlimited), it actually had brought DOWN the total down speed to like 250kB/s.
sweet! I gotta try this tonight!
*** Heads-up to all Rogers Hi-Speed Internet users ***
Per their Product Comparison (http://www.shoprogers.com/store/cable/internetcontent/compare_RCI.asp) site and probably within their humungous T&C doc;
* An additional usage above the current bandwidth limit may be charged at $1.25 per gigabyte.
Ultra-Lite, Lite, and Express have a monthly 60GB bandwith activity limit. The Extreme package has 100GB.
I went to view Internet Usage (https://www.shoprogers.com/Customercare/UsageService/Usage_account_select.asp) for my account and they've started logging again (it stopped near end of October '06) as of January 26th this year.

Rogers monitors all known P2P ports. I get warning messages on my Azureus all the time letting me know about it so I can either change the port or enable I2P.
My friend who lives two streets down from me received a letter last week from Rogers informing him that he has been banned for copy right infringement. He was downloading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas...lol
What's Azureus? ;) j/k
I've yet to ever receive any letters of those sorts from Rogers altho I constantly hear of friends or friends of friends getting them. I've yet to get any of those port warning msgs too ...

i do 510 kb with bell sympatico...

I've skimmed through Bell Sympatico's Agreements and Policies (http://service.sympatico.ca/index.cfm?method=content.view&category_id=550&content_id=921) and in writing, they have similar bandwidth process in place;
The Sympatico High Speed (and Sympatico High Speed Ultra) Internet service includes:
i. a high speed Internet connection;
ii. depending on the particular Service offering available to and selected by you: (A) unlimited bandwidth usage; or (B) bandwidth usage with a limit on the combined download (from the Internet to you) and upload (from you to the Internet) bandwidth activity. In the case of (B), this limit will be identified to you prior to placing an order with Your Service Provider. An additional charge will apply for bandwidth activity that exceeds this limit. It is your responsibility to monitor and manage your monthly download and upload bandwidth activity. To allow you to monitor your monthly upload and download bandwidth activity, the Bandwidth Activity Tracker is available after you login to the Customer Self Care site at www.bell.ca/myinternet;
The Sympatico Basic Lite Internet service includes:

I'd highly recommend going with a DSL reseller. There are plenty out there, and I've found the reliability the same as Bell or Rogers. Many have true unlimited transfer and allow servers to be run.
Great site to compare ISP's including their services:

My friend has the Rogers Extreme one and he received 3 letters of copyright infringement and stuff from bting. I think they capped his usage until he called up the sales department of Rogers and say he never knew it was illegal. They had him do some confirmation thing, and they put him back on.
