View Full Version : Considering SRI, need Advice.

Hi everyone,
I have been searching around for an intake for my 2.3L MT. It seems that some say SRI works better if it comes with a heat shield like the Simota Carbon fibre one. But I\'ve always thought that Cold Air was always best... I searched on Ebay and there aren\'t that many GOOD SRI for a decent amount of $$.
Another thing I have to consider is can I use the CAI in the winter, as I do some highway driving from Markham to Oshawa. Would it be better to go with a SRI and which brand?
Thanks,

I\'ve got the Simota V1 and have had it on for almost a year now and driven through all seasons with no issues. I don\'t know the status of their current design as there were cel issues when they changed over to the V2. The Simota pricing increased like everything else. Look at some members stuff at the next meet and then decide. Don\'t buy a cheap SRI and expect to pay over $250.00

i\'m still trying to decifer (sp?) what all the different types of intakes are and their pros/cons.... i tried doing a seach, but i didn\'t feel that i was getting the answers i needed answered as every discussion thread found seemed to talk about advanced topics about the system...
if anyone can chime in and tell me quickly whats what, what\'s good/bad ..etc, that\'d be great...
i know there is something called CAI and SRI, any other types of intake systems? I found a GB on the other mazda forum for the F2 intake...that\'s the same thing as a CAI right?
I\'ve been considering a Simota intake. For me its a little late, because I don\'t want to have it for just the fall. A key thing to consider is the amount of water it will take in. CAI (cold air intake) rests just behind the left fog light. The SRI (short ram intake) rests just behind the left headlight.
I\'ve narrowed it down to the Simota for Spring, summerish to fall, and back to stock for winter.
My only concern is will I have issues with the current Simota intake???? Is the newest version causing problems with software...I want to install and go come next spring.
PS For those with the CAI I have a suggestion. If you have any model (GS/GX/GT) take off the plastic around the fog light (or where the non foglight is). GET SOME EXTRA AIR TO YOUR INTAKE...more dirt and water too :p...Just a suggestion.

have you heard of anyone hydrolocking their 3? with a CAI? with SRI? a lot of us have had CAI/SRI setups and we\'ve been fine.. of course that DOESN\'T mean it won\'t happen to you
the placement of the filter on an SRI is MUCH more favourable hence the chances of a hydrolock on SRI <<<<<<<<<<<<<< CAI..
and why would you bother removing it for the winter? just a pain in the arse..
V1 - no probs
V2 - cell issues, runs too rich
V3 - AFAIK, no probs
V1 -> V2 was a plastic insert that was too narrow and did not allow enough air in.. V3, that inlet has been resized/fixed IIRC
check the other thread for a link to a $165 kit.. it might be sold by now..
thx Majic, thats all the info I need :)

from your responses, does it seem like that CAI does actually perform better than a SRI, but due to hydrolocking issues the SRI is better? Can someone tell me what hydrolocking is? getting too much water thru the air system?

Hydrolock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrolock)
I\'m not worried about hydrolock, just water in general is not good for the engine. You\'d really have to try to hydrolock your car...hmm maybe a lifted off-road 3...hmmm? :p

V1 had an inlet tube inside the filter area that was approx. 0.25\" smaller inner diameter than the MAF tube, but NO velocity stack

V2 had a bigger inlet tube in the filter area (to match the MAF housing tube diameter) and included a velocity stack (the plastic insert) to smooth the air flow into the MAF. however, this bigger tube and velocity stack caused a CEL since there was too much air going over the MAF and it couldn\'t meter it properly.

V3 kept the bigger inlet tube and velocity stack BUT it reduced the MAF tube by approx 0.25\" in diameter (you will see that the V3 MAF tube is skinnier than the V1/V2 -- the opposite of V1).

Question...
I might be ordering an Umnitza intake soon, and I\'m wondering if there is any other place to get them other than off the website. They\'re listed at 200$US on the website, but I have to add shipping and mostly duty. I\'m wondering what kind of total am I looking at here?
i\'ve had a v3 for 8 months on my 2.3 06 sedan. no cel yet
i have really enjoyed it ever since installing (which took me about 45 minutes with no previous experience with anything remotely related to automotive work)
How did you end up paying?
I purchased from Umnitza but I live in the states. Sorry not much help for your situation.
Yea...the emailed me 35$ for shipping....I\'m just worried about the border, it will probably bring costs to over 300$...So if Joe has an MS intake in stock, I\'ll stick with that.
