Today\'s topic is God.
How can there be a God when there is so much injustice in this world? A 43 year old mother was killed by a fallen tree while camping near Peterborough. I\'m assuming she\'s not a crack-dealer of course, but she\'s dead. Then we have pedophiles that keep on hurting children and get away with it. Where\'s the justice in that?
The Tsunamis from a little whiles back. Why did those 200,000+ people have to die?
And the typical response from the clergy? \"We must not question the Creator\'s ways\". That sounds like a cop-out answer if you ask me. If you can\'t explain it, then just say \"We must not question the Creator\'s ways\".
If I\'ve offended anyone, then good. I wanna hear what you have to say.

I agree with Jobes - this is going to become a big debate. And I\'m not a bible thumper/die hard religious type. And no, you haven\'t offended me.
One of the classic reasons why someone says God doesn\'t exist you have brought up here - because injustice is allowed.
The assumption one makes here is that God will prevent injustice, however no where in scripture (from a Christian stand point) do I recall it being said he\'ll prevent injustice now. What we are told is justice will be served when the saviour comes (i.e. end of this world).
It\'s quite possible that God chooses to allow things to just happen - though he could control the weather, he chooses not to - no different in ways a cop may allow something \'not nice\' to happen to someone. At least based on scripture, God made man in his own image, so it\'s quite possible that God allows things to \'just happen\' like we do and not do anything about it at that point. It\'s a question of what you (God) does in the end - if you (God) continues to do nothing, then you\'re right - there is no God. For all of the possible debating that could be done - we\'ll really not know till we\'re dead or the rapture comes.
When the clergy/strongly religious types answers with \"God\'s will/mysterious ways....\" stuff - what do you expect - they\'re only human and are trying to give an answer for a being that they have never met or could understand at this level.
Maybe in the end, read
Pascal Wager (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascals_wager) - it\'s an interesting way also to look at why/why not believe in a God/religion.

I am not a hard-core Catholic, but I am a Catholic nonetheless. I believe in the \"Ant Farm Theory\".
God set things in motion at the beginning of time and sat back and let civilization and humankind evolve. Once you\'re dead He \"debriefs\" you on your life and you are either sent to Heaven, Hell or Pergatory.

A friend of mine once told me an old proverb they have in his country.
\"Bad things happen for a good reason\"
oh yeah, and Confucius say, \"Man who walk wrong way through airport
turnstyle going to Bangkok\"
I wasn\'t gonna touch this thread, because I thread like this causes to much controversy anyway and no one and I mean NO ONE, athiest or priest or Ali G, never gets anywhere.
BUT I do have a slight opinion!
The mysterious ways thing is my call to, no matter how lame, or wierd...its just what my religion (catholic) believes.
Trully though, I have matured to the point, where these \"works\" of God are not my religion. I believe in the resurrection, and life after death. As for works of God? Sort of, something made that big bang.
(I like the family guy where God puts a match to his but and farts the universe, I like that theory.)
Religion is a matter of \"goodness\".
I learned this nice and early.
ALL RELIGIONS follow something close to the \'Golden Rule\'
Do onto others as you would have done onto you...
in otherwords... BE NICE!!!!
What can you disagree with about that? You don\'t need a God to be NICE, so I respect athiests too.
Its all about unity and being good to one another, not blaming eachother or something greater than us.
My two cents.
Peace

I agree.
I had to take Religion up until Grade 12 and that last year was the most fascinating and satisfying Religion course that I had ever taken. That year we learned about different religions, Judaisim, Hinduism, Budism, Islam, etc. It left me with an appreciation for all of the religions of the world and how, essentially, all religions are the same.

Injustice isn’t caused by God. Injustice is caused by man (i.e. Human race). Accidents of life should not be confused with injustice. God doesn’t exercise control over these things. The notion that an omnipotent being would visit suffering and turmoil on people as part of a greater plan is obscene in the most repugnant way.

I can\'t speak for all clergy but in my case my response would have included a quote from Monty Python to break the ice before coming down with some \"rath of God\" quote.
Humans have a need to believe in something. The notion that we are all alone on this blue marble is enough to stir up questions in all of us. Why are we here? How did we get here? Why is Broli allowed to post so much? These are all questions that will foster discussions over and over again. I believe in God. I don’t exactly know why but I do because there is something inside of me that compels me to believe. I don’t believe in religion.
I think the two and separate entities. Religion is Man’s interpretation of God. It relieves us all of any responsibility for our actions. It sanctions discrimination of people on the basis that it’s “God’s Will.†God gave a conscience and free will. We have unlimited potential. How we use it is up to us not God.
Approximately two thousand years ago a simple carpenter dared to question the prevailing religion of the time with the notion that we should treat one another with the respect that we all deserve regardless of who we are. He preached compassion to those less fortunate. It was a radical notion. So radical that he was put to death. Those that came after him took his words and twisted them to suit their own agenda and to advance their own causes. Religions have been used and are still used today to start wars and oppress people.
God doesn’t oppress people. God doesn’t call on people to bomb abortion clinics. God doesn’t call on people to blow themselves up. God doesn’t afflict innocent children with deadly viruses and makes them suffer to the bitter end. Man does all of this. As someone mentioned before, you don’t need to believe in God to practice the “Golden Rule.†Religion does not have a monopoly on morality. We all do. Somewhere along the way mankind has lost its way and it became easier to relieve ourselves of any responsibility by claiming it was required by God.
The preceeding post represents the voices inside my head.

even in ur god rant u have to mention me!
shame on you Cardi!
I believe people have th right to believe whatever they want!
but it boggles my mind when people who are intelligent believe for the sake of believing
and this notion of Faith!
the onus of proof is on those who believe, to prove what they believe is true,
i was brought up with a mixed religion background, my mom and dad are different reglions, neither of them are any sort of christian/catholic, growing up in canada, i was surrounded by the christian religion,
i am not religious, i don\'t believe in god,
this is my position, having grown up without the force feeding of religion that is generally pushed upon children. (even when subtle)
i believe that if no one was exposed to religon until they were cognitively mature, and at that point, they learned about religion, they would see it as BS
the morals that can be instilled by religion, are good, but as mentioned they can be recieved from other sources. certainly, it was advantageous throughout history to form groups of people for protection, religion was simply one way to do that,
and it had the advantage of
1. explain the unexplainable (gods will, mysterious ways and such)
2. organize people and control them without question (religions are like the biggest cults, u tell people what to do and they do, \"what u don\'t want to do that?, well ur choice but ur going to HELL\")
through history the most corrupt organization ever, is the catholic church,
and it is the most powerful religious body in the world

That\'s the reason why I don\'t believe in the Catholic Church, but I do believe in the
Catholic teachings. Not the literal teachings, but what those teachings stand for, respecting and caring for your fellow man. I just don\'t like those bible thumpers who try to shove it down your throat.

For me, God is a trusted friend.
I may not see him every day, but I always feel that he is with me in one way or another. I\'m not a hardcore catholic, but I do practice my faith with pride. But let me make something clear. I whole-heartedly believe that there is a God, and I believe in and practicing the concepts and ideas of the Catholic faith, just not the rules. I believe that if you do something good for someone, you will be rewarded in this life or the next. What I don\'t believe are some of the teachings that are based on technicalities of the Catholic Faith, such as outcasting gays or sex before marriage.
There have been situations in my life that if I didn\'t believe in God, then I probably wouldn\'t have been able to get through it. What kind of God there is I don\'t know. But there are times in my life where I just saw things work out too well for it not to be a part of some \"divine plan\".
But I also believe that people should be able to believe what they want. People should do what makes them happy, and what makes those around them happy. And for doing that, they will be rewarded in one way or another.
\"Not the literal teachings, but what those teachings stand for, respecting and caring for your fellow man. I just don\'t like those bible thumpers who try to shove it down your throat.\"

Friends can betray you. Friends have betrayed me in the past. God has not. In the most trying of times my faith in God has given me the strength to do some pretty amazing things. My faith has given me a greater sense of confidence which no one can deny is a good thing. What does it matter how I came upon it?

I and many others were brought up in a strict Catholic house. When I questioned my faith I was told to shut up and carry on. When you get to a certain age just towing the line isn\'t important any more. You have to find your own faith Broli. You are happy the way you are and that\'s great but don\'t use words like \"programming\" to decide that my belief in a God is foolish. YOU are programmed by society whether you know it or not. of course friends can betray you!
i suspect that God not betraying u and giving u strength and what not, is more, ur own strength showing, if u don\'t want to take credit for great things u have done, well so be it, but u r the one who did it. If god would act in ur life why would SHE not act to stop terrible attrocities going on,

You see, those two statements right there contradict one another. You are not attacking anyone\'s beliefs but you are passing judgement. Is it not enough to say just to proclaim that you don\'t believe in a higher power? Why call believers foolish? Why make yourself out be superior to another?
fool-ish:
adjective
1.Lacking or exhibiting a lack of good sense or judgment; silly: foolish remarks.
2.Resulting from stupidity or misinformation; unwise: a foolish decision.
3.Arousing laughter; absurd or ridiculous: a foolish grin.
4.Immoderate or stubborn; unreasonable: foolish pride; foolish love.
5.Embarrassed; abashed: I feel foolish telling you this.
6.Insignificant; trivial: spent all their money on foolish little knickknacks.
I think we just have to respect one another\'s choice of religions or lack thereof. I don\'t think WUD wanted this thread to be a debate, religion vs. non-religion.

that people only seem to think that is offensive to say
\"god doesn\'t exist\"
and it is ok to say he/SHE(cardi) does!
i don\'t take offense to anything,
i am sure that is well documented throughout this board!
and foolish,
yes i think that the term is applicable
1.exhibiting a lack of good sense or judgment; silly: foolish remarks.
2.Resulting from misinformation; unwise: a foolish decision.
that is how i meant it!
to select from ur definition!
it makes no, logical sense for a god to exist
it is foolish to believe without proof of said existence

I\'ve decided that it\'s not worth the effort other than to say you\'re a hypocrite. I\'m not supposed to take this personally right? Foolish isn\'t believing in God Broli. Foolish is believing YOUR own belief system is above everyone else’s.
Live and let live Broli.
u have to appreciate this from the angle that i see it!
it would be different if i said i believe pig could fly
and u guys all said u didn\'t beleive it and i called u
foolish!
if this was the case i would be foolish for beleiving my belief system is better than urs
but, the important thing here is that
whoever is right, be it me or you,
the other is foolish,
this we must agree on!
basically it sounds to me like u r saying pigs can fly
or i believe in magic (not majic)
and that to me seems foolish
it is ok to beleive it
and i am open minded to say
if u could prove to me that i am wrong
i would accept it
belive me,
as time moves on religion will have less and less to do with
the world
and out postions will turn
well we will all be dead
but the people who don\'t believe will outnumber those who do believe
it is ineveitable!
i would concede this point!
the big bang
was something coming from nothing
or if u beleive in a multidimentional universe, with big bangs occuring on top of eachother
creating alternate dimensions
then, the first big bang
was someting coming from nothing
how this occured is beyond out comprehension at least for now
but, i would say that something came from nothing
u might call that act of something coming from nothing god
not that god caused it to happen
but rather the act it self is what u call god!
i could accept that!
but then god is an event
and not a entitity
and that is an important distiction!!

Since blunty so succinctly answered today\'s Caramilk question, today\'s Supplemental question is: Should a woman have the right to have an abortion?
You think I am posting this question to stir the pot even further (well, yes I am), but I am really conflicted on this one. If you had asked me years ago, I would have been staunchly pro-choice. No question about it. But once we had kids, I have changed my mind (somewhat). I find it offensive on my part to think that I could require a woman to carry an unwanted baby to term, but I\'ve also been so moved by thoughts of severed baby parts... And all of this once I had kids. It didn\'t have this effect on me prior to kids.
Weird.

Why Can\'t I Own a Canadian?
October 2002
Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a east coast resident, which was posted on the Internet. It\'s funny, as well as informative:
Dear Dr. Laura:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God\'s Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them:
When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can\'t I own Canadians?
I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don\'t agree. Can you settle this?
Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn\'t we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God\'s word is eternal and unchanging.
Your devoted fan,
Jim

Actually, I have a more important question that\'s been buggin me for ages (religion related, what a surprise!):
What is the meaning of Joan Osbourne\'s song, \"One of Us\"
If God had a name, what would it be
And would you call it to his face
If you were faced with him in all his glory
What would you ask if you had just one question
And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
If God had a face what would it look like
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like heaven and in jesus and the saints and all the prophets
And yeah yeah god is great yeah yeah god is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
He\'s trying to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in rome
And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
What if god was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
Just trying to make his way home
Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just trying to make his way home
Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in rome

life is like purchasing summer tires. some people want them to that last longer, some people just want to have fun, and some people want the best of both worlds.
tis not that i dunno whether to believe in it or not, its that i dont care. dont u think its frustrating to understand things through whatever perspective people tell you to? how about just looking through the looking glass without an opinion on why whatever your looking at is happening.

Einstone was a character from the Fred Flintstones cartoon series. Einstien was German-born American theoretical physicist.
\"This formula proposes that when a body has a mass (measured at rest), it has a certain (very large) amount of energy associated with this mass. \"
\"The E of the formula can be seen as the total energy of the body, which is proportional to the mass of the body.\"
In practical terms, when reading your questions my right arm is at my side at rest (M). Although it may not be doing anything it can, if tempted enough, exert enough energy (E) to administer a cock punch. This total energy is directly proportional to the mass of my hand at my side. If I so choose, and believe I\'ve been thinking about it quite a bit. I can hold a brick in my hand and therefore have enough potential energy to really do some harm to you. This of course can only be tested in a vacuum where the speed of light (c2) comes into play. Unfortunately, my Shrink-O-Zap gun has been misplaced so you\'ll we\'ll have to pretend we\'re fighting in a Dyson.

There is a battery back up with Rogers but I\'m not sure how long it lasts (~2 hours). For me there is just no incentive to switch from Bell. I would only be saving $5 per month and I don\'t like the idea of losing phone service during a power outage or possibly not having access to 911/emergency services. Also, it would require some pretty ugly wiring to run across a room in my condo from the cable modem to the VoiP box.

You may want to contact your home alarm company before you decide to VOIP. Many alarm companies require active phone lines to monitor your home alarm. They need more time to switch over the technology to VOIP.

1) battery backup - how often are you w/o power? yah i thought so.. besides.. for the emergency times there are cellphones
2) $5 mth? wow.. our bill went from ALMOST $60/mth with tax to $19.32/mth tax in
3) ugly wiring.. yes that would be the ONLY downside if your phone sits far away from the phone

my friend currently has his VoIP plugged straight into the main (distribution or whatever you call the thing where bell\'s line is hooked up and then it splits it to all the phone outlets in your house) and it works as long as you have a clear signal. so now all he does is plug a phone on any phone outlet in his house and voila, he has VoIP line. :)

4) there are some cool features such as a \'0\' out option or vmail as an email attachment.. can maBell do that? :p
1) Not often at all, but still, the one time you\'ll need a live phone line you won\'t have it
2) My wife and I do not use our home phone for much so we have a fairly basic $30/mth package
3) You agree so I don\'t have to argue this point
4) Why would I want to send my VM to somebody else via e-mail?
I\'m not saying that I won\'t switch to VoIP, but right now there are too few incentives to bother.

1) Not often at all, but still, the one time you\'ll need a live phone line you won\'t have it - true.. i guess it\'s hard to teach an old dog new tricks ;) :D
2) My wife and I do not use our home phone for much so we have a fairly basic $30/mth package - i see where the savings may not warrant the trouble.. did i mention 5c/min (if you don\'t get a \'plan\' for LD to can/us and many other countries
3) You agree so I don\'t have to argue this point - moot point
4) Why would I want to send my VM to somebody else via e-mail? - to yourself.. say you\'re waiting for some phone call, you can redirect your # to your work phone or receive an email on your bberry and hear the vmail left on your house phone.. just something to make the life a tad easier - maybe a gimmick but it\'s damn cool :)

We don\'t call anybody long distance with any frequency.

But I can check my Bell Canada voicemail from anywhere. And if the call was truly urgent, why wouldn\'t I just have the person call my cell anyways?

Today\'s question:
0-60 runs via a camcorder
Just curious, can I time my 0-60 runs via a camcorder? My camcorder has a xx:xx:xx display to show minutes:seconds:frames. It\'s 30 frames per second, so each frame number would be 1/30th of a second.
So, if I record my speedo, will I be able to calculate a more accurate measure than simply by way of handheld stopwatch? Or does the time/space continuum fabric get ripped by the use of such a method? Pipe up ya geeks!
Don\'t hate me \'cuz I\'m stupid...

the reaction time will be non existent (a few tenths that can trun into some extra time you shoudl add to your run) and unless you have a digital spedometer the 60mph mark will be quite subjective considering the mph readout is probably very small on your speedo (not the bannana hammock) but yah.. it\'ll be a better approximation than a stop watch imo..

^^^ Thx majic. Gonna try some runs this weekend.
Today\'s question:
Should we have some form of privatized health care? I think there are some inefficiencies in the public system that can be done away with via a privatized system, but the socialist in me does not want to admit there will be at least two classes of health care, with the rich jumping the queue to faster service and reaping the benefits of better technology. On the other hand, as my parents grow older (as I do as well), I struggle with the notion that I would like the best possible care for family, even if it means going down to the U.S. until similar standards are avaiable here. What a dilemma.

OK, since no one bothered answering the previous question on health care, let\'s do an easier one.
What is the purpose of those little mats that you see in some urinals? Are they some sort of splash reducing mat or are they just some sort of advertising for a \"captive\" audience?

They\'re meant to keep you from grounding yourself when taking a piss. You can\'t imagine how many people are killed each year when they complete the circuit and electrocute themselves. I read that on the Internet.

Huh? I always place both of my hands on the wall in front of me and ground myself to the the ceramic tile on the walls.

Never!
Some ceramic tiles are applied using a steel mesh to hold the mortar base to the substrate. The rubber mat is safer. Besides, that obscures your view of the literary prose written in the grout lines of the tiles.

i think they stop splash back!
and decrease the odurs from returning up thru the urinal

I think there\'s some confusion here - u talking about the plastic mat inside the urinal or the rubber mat on the floor?
