I wonder if it uses the S40 / Mazda 3 / Focus Platform.? Looks like they took a four door hatch and made it a 2 door.

I like it. And it comes in a diesel :)

I hope Volvo brings the C30 to Canada - they need an entry level car to fill the gap. It looks kinda P1800(a good thing) - this is intelligent design people. The hatch rules!:)

TheProfessor
07-24-2006, 11:12 PM
The car is based off of the Mazda3 platform and will come with two engine options for Canada: the base 2.4L five cylinder producing 168hp and 170 ft lbs of torque, or a turbocharged variant of the same engine putting out 218hp and 220 ft lbs of torque. The car will be officially unveiled at the Paris autoshow and will arrive in Canadian showrooms ahead of the USA in early 2007.

I think I might put off looking at the Audi A3 and Volvo S40 in favor of this as it more suits our needs.

Pricing has not yet been released, though there is tons of speculation that it will start at around $29,999K for the base model.

Well for anyone who cares Volvo Canada has a build and price feature on their website for the C30. Unfortunately my fears were made true in that they have once again over priced this vehicle. Most dealers already have one or two to test drive, with regular shipments coming in April. I suspect that after only a few months they will begin discounting this car like they do all Volvo's (heavily).

I think its priced just about right . Remember volvo is an "upscale" car manufacture ... you should be comparing this to the a3 .

Anyways, i feel in love with this car after seeing this picture

TheProfessor

Picture isn't working. And you are correct, it's easy to forget how good a value the Mazda3 really is, but keep in mind that the Volvo is a premium brand and charge accordingly. I still think it's over priced if you were to pay MSRP, but in a few months time they'll start to whore that sucker out and that's when I'll look at it.

I think the gold/bronze colour on a white or black C30 would look really nice.

TheProfessor

I actually don't like the two tone very much.....if it were up to me I'd do a white on white, but the wifey wants black on black.

I'm a fan of Volvos, coming from my Step Dad having one when I was a kid. And in the Volvo lineup this is quite well priced. I also like 5Cyl motors, having quite a unique sound compared to any other type.

However....... I'm not sure about 2 things on this. First is the interior..... looks quite ugly to me, but that's purely a personal preference, I'm sure others will love it. Second is the power rating. I don't think it's high enough for where the market is going 200ish is fine for the GTI, but that's been around a while, but I think 240ish to 260ish would be better.

Good to see they're entering the sport compact market though, and this is definately a sport compact :)

Volvo will be releasing a C30R with high 200's for hp in a year or so. Whether that model makes it to Canada has yet to be seen.

So basically if you want a Mazdaspeed 3 with a different body, or different engine but essentially the same car, wait a little for the volvo.

Cool, though if it follows the other R pricing, we could be looking at low to mid 40K.

I'd hardly call it the same car. The Volvo will come with many upgrades like heated power memory seats, more airbags than you can shake a stick at, a premium 650 watt Dynaudio Dolby Pro Logic II stereo, two less doors, higher quality materials, longer warranty, much lower insurance, etc.

I'm very upset they are not offering overseas delivery on the C30. If that was an option we would've have already gone and given them our money. It will likely be available next year, though by then who knows what we'll want.

The commercial is doing exactly what it was intended to do, and that's to get people talking. My wife was really set on getting this car but right now you can get an equally loaded S40 for a little less money per month! We're still going to go drive it when the weather gets better but I'm starting to have doubts if this will make it into our 'garage' anytime soon.

I test drove the T5 before we ordered the 3. I have to say I wasn't impressed with the drive, features or dealer experience. I knew more about the car than they did, and even after booking an appointment a week in advance, I was still left waiting around for an hour before they pulled the car off the showroom floor so we could take it out. It was quiet on the inside and had great fit & finish, but you got nothing for the money. 35k for a car that small with limited features (no sunroof, heated seats, xenon, or 17" wheels) seems like they priced themselves into the A3 category, which was exactly what they wanted to stay away from. Strange...

I liked this car ever since the concept stage. In fact I contemplated on waiting for this when I was shopping for an A3. But when I saw it in the auto show, I'm glad I went with the A3. Don't get me wrong, it's still a very nice looking car, but the back seats are very small, and it's just not as versatile as I wanted it to be. The interior is decent, similar to the Volvo line. But maybe I'm biased, I still prefer the Audi interior. And I might be one of the few who actually likes it's rear hatch. Looks different than other cars, but with Volvo's classic style.

Went to the Volvo dealer in mississauga on the weekend and had a closer look at it and was not impressed. It looked better at the Auto Show. I think I will look closer at the A3 instead. The interior was very blah, and I don't like the 2-tone or the hatch area. Still looks great from the front though.

Wild Weasel
05-03-2007, 11:43 AM
I can't imagine someone choosing between the C30 and the A3. They're completely different markets.

The A3 is a very useful small wagon, while the C30 is a completely impractical 3-door hatch with a tiny opening for the hatch.

TheProfessor
05-03-2007, 01:59 PM
Not to mention they're about $5K different in price ;)

Webb70, the two tone is an option, you can get everything one colour if you prefer.

http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/cc/07c30.htm

it's all too easy for the price to get out of control if you go for too many extras. Case in point: my Passion Red T5 tester had the $1,000 DynAudio Package, which plugs a six-CD changer and a 650-watt surround amp powering 10 speakers into the C30's dash. Then, there's the $3,400 Sport Package, which adds a firmer, slightly lower suspension, 17-inch wheels, heated front seats with power adjustment for the driver, bi-Xenon headlights with washers, Homelink and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass. Pile all of that, plus $1,500 for a sunroof, onto the C30 T5's $31,995 base price, and you get a car worth $39,610 including a $100 A/C tax and the rather high $1,615 freight charge.

But hang on: that's just for the factory options. My test car sported a dealer-installed, $4,000 body-coloured side skirt and fender kit (which replaces the black lower body trim that all C30s come with standard) and a set of $2,000 18-inch wheels (replacing, in this case, the 17-inch wheels from the Sport Package). Altogether, it looks hot, but those dealer extras added an unbelievable $6,000 to the bottom line, and I didn't get to ask if that included installation (or tires, which some manufacturers like to charge extra for after you've opted for aftermarket wheels). All of a sudden, you're driving a $43,610 compact hatchback when, for a few hundred bucks less, you could've had a BMW 328xi Touring. And, for about $34,000, a VW GTI can be fitted with leather, a sunroof and 18-inch wheels, never mind its strong turbocharged motor and six-speed transmission.

Suddenly, that monkey on your back doesn't look like such a good deal. My advice? If you must have the C30, don't bother with the bigger wheels

New article... ya they go on to say that it doesn't fit things as well as a mazda sport does

the S60-R and V70-R weren't exactly stellar sellers either; it didn't help that Volvo tried to market the S60-R as an M3 competitor (hah!).

a C30-R would be something though, but i don't think it'll happen. Volvo just has too much of a pensioner's image..maybe a C30-R will change that..who knows?
