Hey everyone,

I\'m thinking of getting a GPS for the car, does anyone have one? Are they good? I don\'t want to go spend $400 buks and then see that it\'s crap.

just in case that is the situation

for instance . . .

if you had a laptop
you could purchases a GPS reciever (a computer peripheral, like a mouse, it hooks into the USB port (or serial). You install a driver and you are half way there.

now you can obtain your local position from your reciever, but what does it mean?
and how do you get to majic\'s house?

well thats the next step, you need some sort of navigation software
microsoft streets and trips, or iguidance, or something,

obtain that program and install it!

you almost done!!

now, go to the options of your program and tell it to read from the correct port, or to autoscan everytime!

now you are done!

if you already have a laptop, this is a better option for you then buying a standalone unit, if not, and you don\'t have anyneed for a carputer, then it may be better to get a single unit!

good luck!

I\'m in the process of looking for a GPS reciever and software for my pocket PC. Same idea as a laptop. Anyone have any suggestions on a package? I don\'t really wanna spend to much. (I already have the pocket PC).

Okay, so if i don\'t have a laptop and don\'t plan to buy one, should I get one of those portable ones from Crappy Tire?

hey man,

if you really want the gps, and you don\'t have a laptop or pocket pc,
i would suggest that you get a decent one, they are portable, so they can go out of one car and into another,

maybe look around for a used on,

i am not sure if the software is updatable, i would imagine it is, since the maps may change,
just keep that in mind when looking,

or the cheapest gps,
mapquest it b4 u leave and bring the directions,

hope that helps,

good luck and happy shopping!

I have a Garmin I3 and it\'s pretty darn fun. Having a GPS is so handy for trips to the cottage / camping, or unfamiliar places. Just this weekend I used it to go camping and it proved itself very worthy. Being able to plot detour routes to avoid heavy traffic is a blast and you simply never get lost. However with detours, sometimes traffic really clears up around the next bend so you gotta weigh your options wisely.

The unit has some downfalls, it doesn\'t seem to last too long with NIHM rechargeable batteries - (2-3 hours) I think.. but that\'s somewhat expected. For long trips I usually connect it to the cigarette lighter and suction cup it right under my rear view mirror. It got a little confused the other day when I hit the highway DVP/404/401 junction but that\'s probably attributed to the recent construction. Other than that, it\'s a fun investment for those who love road trips.
