2007 BMW 335i Dynamometer Run
By Jason Cammisa

http://www.automobilemag.com/features/news/0609_z+2007_BMW_335i+front_corner.jpg

The 2007 BMW 335i will be in showrooms next month, and is the first application of BMW’s new twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. This is a big deal because BMW has had only two short affairs with turbocharged gasoline production cars--the 2002 Turbo in the mid-70s, and the E23 745i in the early 80s--and neither was sold in the U.S. As the saying goes, third time’s the charm.

BMW fit this new engine with two small-displacement turbochargers--instead of one larger unit--in an effort to reduce lag. And for the most part, it worked. Behind the wheel, you’re vaguely aware that this engine doesn’t have quite as crisp a throttle response as its normally-aspirated siblings do. But you don’t care--you’re too busy trying to hold on for dear life.
http://www.automobilemag.com/features/news/0609_z+2007_BMW_335i+hood_up.jpg

This is one hell of a motor, pulling smoothly and strongly from idle all the way to its 7000-rpm fuel cutoff. There’s no boost gauge, and since you barely hear the turbos spooling, it’s easy to forget they’re even there. Once you’ve adjusted to the slight lag in power delivery following big, sudden throttle openings, all you notice is the sound of that silky in-line six.

BMW says that this engine makes 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. We were so impressed with its power that we couldn’t help wonder if that was a conservative rating. Wasting no time, I swiped the keys and drove to a local dyno shop to find out.

We used a DynoJet chassis dyno, which measures an engine’s power output at a vehicle’s rear wheels. Because of frictional driveline losses, this number is always lower--generally by fifteen to twenty percent--than the quoted power output from the manufacturer, which is measured at the engine itself.

Here’s what we found:
The non-turbocharged 330i, rated by BMW at 255 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque, puts about 200 hp and 180 lb-ft to the rear wheels. That’s roughly a twenty-percent loss. Since they have similar drivelines, you’d expect the 335i to put down 235 hp and 250 lb-ft.
http://www.automobilemag.com/features/news/0609_z+2007_BMW_335i+rear_corner_dyno.jpg
But it didn’t. It put down a whole lot more: 275 hp and 300 lb-ft. A few quick taps on our trusty calculator shows that this engine is likely putting out closer to 350 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque.

Technical editor Don Sherman’s ears perked up at all this number crunching. With all that power, he wondered, is the 335i faster than the outgoing 333-hp E46 M3? We waved goodbye to the shiny new coupe’s rear tires, and sent him to find out.

Don coaxed the 335i to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds--only 0.3 seconds slower than the M3. The 335i covered the quarter-mile in 13.6 seconds @ 104 mph--again, only 0.2 seconds and 1 mph behind the M3.

So in an all-out drag race, the 335i comes close, but can’t quite match the M3’s blistering acceleration. Those numbers, though, only tell half the story. Have a look at the top-gear acceleration figures. In sixth gear, the M3 needs 14.7 seconds to get from 30 to 70 mph – but the 335i does it in only 12.5.

That, my friends, is the beauty of this engine. At full bore, it’s as fast as an M3. But at moderate engine speeds, it’s even faster. What a great way to keep us all interested until the next M3 comes along.

Hot damn!!! Doesn\'t hurt that the car is so sexy-sexy either!!! That is one hell of a car, and you know its gonna lead the class till its next redsign. BMW engines are always the tops. What engine did the McLaren F1 have? A 1990s 7 series engine, built up by the M division. OOOeeeeuuuu, if I had money!!!

Can you imagine the next M3??? Might even nudge up to some of the big players like Ferrari!!!

08-15-2006, 10:35 AM
The next M3 is going to have a V8 or something, its going to be a monster .

I love the 335i , and the fact that bmw is using two small turbos rather than one to reduce lag . I believe this car will be priced around the current M3 if not more. The new M3 might be pushed into the 90-something bracket where other competitors like the RS-4 are.

Wow.

It\'s a sweet looking car... and nice performance numbers to boot.

For those who like the styling of the new coupes I believe you can get an xi model in the new 328 coupe if you want all wheel drive.

3GFX

I doubt they\'ll price the 335i as high as an M3 or higher, keep in mind M3s are still being sold as a current model despite being on the previous platform, therefore slightly less in price.

Yes the M3 is confirmed to have a V8, there was discussion that it would be the same as the V10, just with 2 less cylenders, although to keep up with the RS4 400hp might not be enough. There are rumours of up to 420hp.

Believe it or not I stole the article from a Civic forum! I would love an e46 but I\'m gonna hold off on the new car right now (well, for at least a few months) ;)

Now that you bring it up - if you think of it this way, it\'s a steal.
E46 M3 performance, tuning potential of a FI setup, in a new bodystyle for $20k less.

I\'ll take mine in blue please!

i dont want to sound like i dont like the car...i like the 335 a lot..its sexy and im sure its gonna hawl ass. but for 50k plus, i\'d rather put myself inside a lexus IS350....i know its not a 6 speed, but ive actually driven a IS350 and OMG what a car.....i think im hooked until i could finally afford one....just my .02

chinsterr

The IS350 is a very sexy car too

But one is a coupe and the other is a sedan , two different cars in my opinion. I would take either one of them !!!

Luke (aka \'Buddy\') have you test driven a 3-series sedan (330i) back to back with and IS350? I\'m sure you\'d take the bimmer. Go take one out.

I\'m just thinking out loud here, but that new BMW 335i doesn\'t include a nice front mount intercooler does it.....imagine the power increase with just adding a front mount intercooler and big piping.....got to be at least 50 hp, right.....

TheProfessor
08-26-2006, 05:58 PM
A FMIC should add more power by keeping the intake charge just that much cooler, however depending on the factory boost I doubt it would need to be overly large. The car has some serious tuning potential though.....damn, why can\'t I just win the lottery.

When I was in for service, I asked one of the sales reps to set up a test drive when he gets one in. You shoulda seen the gleam in his eye when he saw a high rolla like TheWUD approach him. Little does he know that TheWUD is so deep in debt that he has to take out a loan to pay for his daily lunch. Bwahahaha... but that won\'t stop TheWUD from taking a 335 for a gentle spin around the block... Bwahahaha...

It does have a front mount intercooler. Although it seems minute and could be replaced with a larger one that would increase horsepower by a few ponies short of 50.

The BMW configurator for the new coupes is out. I just priced what I would like on the 335 and it came out to $59,325. White paint, sports package, park distance control and Logic 7 sound. The premium package didn\'t seem worth it at all.

I\'m going to place my order if I can get a $20,000 discount on this thing. Wish me luck! :(

I would get a white one with red or saddle interior...yummmy.

not a new law, it has always been in place.

there has to be an amber reflector on the front-sides of the car (note a reflector and not a turn signal), just as there has to be a red reflector on the back side of the car (most cars have the reflectors in the light housing, the mazda3 has the red reflectors in the bumpers, for example).

check the HTA for more info on what is required.

Step. According to BMW, the step is only .2 seconds slower to 100kph than the manual. Traditionally, it\'s like .5 to 1 second between manual and autos. Shifts are much much quicker than my step (and I even have the Dinan transmission software that improves shifting over stock).

Amazing is a great word to describe this car. My car now feels absolutely sluggish and loose compared to this thing. Dammit.
