View Full Version : Alternative to MS 3?
So apparently the M1 (can\'t be named that because of Bimmers old supercar) is going to be the car to have of hot hatchbacks.
The motor previously discussed on this forum in the 335i will be shoehorned into the 1-series compartment.
This tiny little car will have over 300 hp and no oversteer issues since its rear wheel drive. If i had the money and BMW would bring it over, I\'d be on the list.

Not a fan of the 1 series. Looks like a 4 door version of the M-Roadster.
Keep in mind this \'M\' version will have a different front fascia and definitly larger rims that will make the car look more aggressive.

True, true...okay so the MS3 will have some serious competition then.

lol, I disagree Joe. The rear drive platform will be so much better with higher horsepower. Looks wise, a toss up for me, probably the MS 3 for most. The key factor I think is that the 135i will be way over priced. :hoho
This car is an embarasment to BMW. It\'s nothing but a ploy to bring BMW to the masses. Once upon a time, having a bimmer was a status symbol- a touch of class. Owning a piece of machinery that was better than anything else on the road. I\'m glad it\'s not coming to North America.
Once upon a time, BMW enthusiests were legit. E39, you\'ve got a picture of an E60 as your avatar ;) :hoho

From BMW\'s standpoint there\'s nothing wrong with that IMO....they are in the business of making money afterall;) I think it\'s about time that North America started to see some of the up-scale hot hatches that the Europeans get.
Don\'t get me wrong- I\'m no BMW snob and the 1 is an excellent car- I just can\'t see it on the streets here in Canada.
In Europe, where every 3rd car is BMW or MB, this type of coupe is as common as a freakin\' Chevy Cobalt here. But that\'s Europe- where they have better taste than our American friends. And lets face it- what the American like is what we get here in Canada.

What\'s wrong with bringing the cars to the masses? You sound pretty snobby to me.

LMAO sock it to him!!! Lol, I was talking to E39 last night, and found it was my brother. Don\'t worry he didn\'t mean to come across as a snob. His other car is a corolla so he\'s far from it :hoho.
He has a good point that was mentioned before in the post. BMW and MBs in europe are as common as a GM or FORD here. BMW 5-series are used as taxis across europe where as we use crown vics. So in comparison a cobalt in europe is like a 1-series here.
In a market where BMW has a wide range of cars that sell for peanuts compared to what they sell for here, a smaller car makes sense in there wider range.
(Just a note, we dont get the smallest 3-series either!!!)
Take MB for a perfect example. They have cars of all shapes and sizes in their range, and only in the past 2-3 years did they bring over the little cars like the A-Class.
No one can tell me that MBs image to some people has been downgraded stateside because of these little benzes that scoot around town. Or what about the B-Class (van), did that possibly skew your image downward of Benz a little?
European car manufacturers are something special. We all know we want one, no matter what the brand. Bimmer to Alfa to Ferrari. They are the cars we work day and night to achieve. The reason car enthusiests exist!!!
Another good example is the Cayenne, it dimmed down porsches image a little, but they did a good job with the SUV power and handling wise and we didn\'t change our minds. But if porsche were to come out with a 4-door sedan which has been buzzing around in rumours for the past few years, I know many people who will not think of porsche as highly as they once did.
So in my opinion, I want the 1-series because it will be that much easier to be a BMW owner and enthusiest. But at the same time, if everyone were to get one, it just wouldn\'t be as special.
Side note: Same principal...a lot of people have Mazda 3s now, and are not enthusiests. Its a shame because I wish everyone could enjoy this wonderful car on more than just a point A-B level. And my car is all the less special because its so common. But like many of us on the forum, the time and money we invest into our 3s make them more special and especially our own.
You got me David (3GFX). I can\'t believe you told everyone I own a Toyota Corolla! It doesn\'t count- that\'s my \"beater\". At least it\'s the sport model with dark tints:p
For those of you who were wondering who does this guy think he is- I was just trying to yank David\'s chain a bit. But he figured out who I was- quickly. It was fun while it lasted. I\'ll be hanging around the board though- you guys (and girl) have a good thing going here. I\'m very impressed with your custom work and with the car photo\'s posted here. Mazda makes some of the best rides available right now.
Cheers,
Alan (E39 owner).

that is actually pretty damned funny!
nice!
That\'s right baby. I\'ve got a 4 year old who will join when he learns to write! He already knows good cars when he sees them. When we go somewhere I as him which car he wants to go in- he always says the BMW, not the Toyota. He always points out black Mazda 3\'s on the road too saying \"that\'s Uncle David\'s car!\".

If you\'re referring to the BMW 1 series, I\'m not so sure. Look at the competition (Audi A3, Volvo S40, MB B class)....they all start at around $32K, but can easily top out around $45K for the top of the line models with all the bells and whistles. I suspect that the Bimmer will be in the same category providing they bring it here.
The equal to an A3 is a 130i....so the 130i would start above 32k. As for th 135i which would probably have a lot of options standard, 40 sounds about right.
Picture a fully loaded Mini Cooper S JCW (also a bimmer). 200hp and a tally of about 40 grand canadian. Therefore a 1 series with more option a larger body a rear drive platform and 300hp would have to be at least 5 grand more.
I\'d say a 135i would be priced between 35k and 45k Canadian if it were in our market.

You don\'t think BMW would offer a 123i or a 125i?
