my opinion is **** what people think...who cares it's your life...if your parents are able to support you and are happy to do so to prop you up to give you a head start on life that is a resource. My parents helped me out a bit too...mainly by buying my old Optra so that I had a way to and from school. I still ended up getting a job to pay rent and gas and other expences while they worried about my tuition. But if they could have my parents would have paid for everything...

Agreed. I get alot of hate for my car because of all these guys from my old high school who drive Sunfires and Old Jettas werent so fortunate ( geobur probably saw some of the hate) . I didnt really know I was getting a car just like this. My original plan was to find a job and save up some money and go to a government auction and buy myself a crown vic or something ( I know I know, thats a horrible financial decision for a person my age... but at 16/17 the crown vic was a pretty cool car in my eyes and can be picked up for cheap). The fact that I was getting a car from my parents was pretty special to me... nevermind the fact that It wasnt a cheap car either. I mean sure I made the final call on my 3, but I respected my parents wishes and was a bit more open minded when looking around ( I was also very undecisive and spend hours and hours every night looking at auto trader and reading reviews :P) and I would have been happy with whatever car they decided to get me ( its ok... my dad hates corollas too and would never buy a corolla :P ).


Come to think of it, If it werent for my parents I probably wouldnt have even made it to college. I would be busy working my ass off trying to pay the tuition. I use my parents investment as just another way to motivate me to work harder.




Also Dont tell my parents (if one of you ever meet them) but I am planning on surprising them with a rather fancy car Once I start making the real money. ;)

exactly...is it possible to work and go to school? Yes...but it is really really tough. My mom did...I have no idea how she managed but she had me as a baby, and worked during the day and did night school to get her property management diplomas...luckily she had my dad who took pretty good care of me while she was out doing that...I know I couldn't have done it...I would have been exhausted.

Like I said...ignore the jealous haters...just never let it go to your head and always be thankful.

Theres waaay to many truly spoiled kids ( parents have more than 100k in yearly income) going around and applying for osap using fake information. If I ever find out about someone I know who does this, I will report their ass in your honour. When you told me your story, Im not gonna lie, I felt bad since thats how I felt about the situation in the first year of college and didnt apply for osap that year :bang . But I was told I should get osap this year since there is only so much my parents can do as they still have other stuff to pay off.


And ya the workload in my college is keeping me from working. I know people who work in my problem and they have really bad scheduling issues because sometimes they have work to do and end up rushing their assignments the night before. I cant handle that much stress. I think even a prof once told us not to work during the school year if you dont have to and just work your ass off in the summer. People always call me a lazy ass for not working during the year,and brag about how they or someone they know go to college/university and still work... But from What I see, most of the programs ( not all) are only just lectures and readings with one big exam at the end of each class. Working on weekends is no problem for them. And if needed they could take a week off before exam week to study. My program is more hands on and most of our marks happen throughout the semester and sometimes involve staying on campus from 7 am till 12 am the next day or whenever security kicks you out. ( I have done this 4 days in a row at the end of 2nd semester last year... I was tired as crap and On the way home I was half really tired as I didnt sleep the last night and half driving home with a goofy grin on my face at 12 in the morning on an empty 400.... Ya next time Im going to find a place in toronto to sleep)

Thats what I plan on doing. Ive heard of nightmares on how long it takes to pay off. Ive use quite a bit actually to pay for my "educational trip" ( once in a lifetime opportunity and I was uncertain if i was ever going to get another chance....as they dont allow the general public into alot of design studios. Next summer I am going to be doing an internship/co op for the whole 4 months and the year after that I will be looking for an actual full time job. My parents said to use my osap for the time being and they will help me out later on) but haven't touched it much besides that except for the occasional food or drink.

I stayed at home while attending uni. and my osap bills were not excessive. My parents also bought me a used car in my third year of uni. It was really a great help but it wasn't as exciting I think as living in residence.
Lastly my baby already has tons of money in her account for her education and she's only 1.5 years old. She'll have our full financial support. ;)

It certainly is great. Residence is waay to overpriced and I would have constant trust issues with whoever my roommate would be. It was cheaper to get a car. I kind of find it funny that soo many people from my town actually wanted to move out of their parents homes after high school and live in residence for University... While it makes sense if the commute is more than 100 kms, alot of these people got residence in Toronto.


For me it was either
1) get a car and drive to campus every day
2) Find a cheap place thats near a transit corridor but in a nicer area like vaughan ( My mom used to work in the hospital next to my college and wouldnt dare let me live in that area from what she has heard of in her years of working there.) I wouldnt mind this option but I suck at cooking and I dont think ill last long if I live off minute noodles for that long of a time.
3) walk to go train station, take train to YorkU, then take a ttc bus from there to my campus... sounds ok? Well what if I told you that would take me about 2h 45 min one way. and The Go trains stop after 6 so I would then have to take the subway all the way down to union on late nights and then hopefully find a bus that will take me up to newmarket, from where I will hope there is someone there to pick me up or else Ill have to take a cab.


Ya Option 1 doesnt sound that bad now. And It was probably the reason I got my car.
