View Full Version : First oil change
Hey guys.
I've read a number of posts on other forums about when to change your oil, what oil to use and how often. But I wanted to ask you guys/girls with the same car as me. (I thought that would be a good idea)
I'm coming up to 4000 kms soon and want to change the oil ASAP. I've heard of not switching to pure synthetic until around 10,000 kms, but I don't know.
I now there were lots of talk about this topic on the old forum, but I can't search that info.
Any info would be great.

I changed to full synthetic at 2000 miles (somewhere over 3000km?). Haven't had a problem and get great gas mileage.
Some people change the oil right after they buy it. I don't think it matters in our engines since they are broken in already from the factory. No special process required either since it is semi-syn from the factory.

I've been buying 5qrt bottles of 5w30 for the past 3 oil changes (15,000 miles or 24,140km) from Wal*Mart. :) They seem to have that more than the 5w20 or 0w20... actually, I've only seen singles of 0w20.

I've seen it at Wal-Mart, I think. It's the Made In Germany ones.

1ST OIL CHANGE AT 4000KM WENT STRAIGHT TO FULL SYNTHETIC
BEEN USING MOBIL 1 FULL SYNTHETIC SINCE DAY ONE
ALL MY OTHER OILCHANGES HAVE BEEN BETWEEN 5000-6000KM
From what I have learned this week... get oil changes done at mazda... it will make it easier if you need to get your car fixed under warranty. They went through everything front to back!

if you keep all of the oil changes noted in the mannual warranty book like i do then you should have no problems at all

Anybody know what if there are any warranty consequences if the maintenance schedule isn't followed? I'm coming up on 4 month, but still way under mileage. Get the oil changed anyways as suggested or wait until the mileage goes up?

Uhhh yeah... most definately.
Reference to the thread where the guy had his engine replaced.
What was the first thing that Mazda wanted to see? HIS SERVICE RECORDS....
Put it this way; a lot of 1.8T (Volkswagen) owners were having troubles with engine sludge. VW wouldnt warranty any work unless there was concrete proof that oil changes were being done by the manufacturers specs.
GO and book your oil change NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

The dealer will no doubt try to get out of it every time. But if you keep accurate records and all your receipts for the oil and filters, then you should be ok.

Oh and I don't know if anyone has ever considered this - but the dealer has a case to get out of the warranty if you use a viscosity other than what is recommeded - 5w20.

I dunno about that. The key word is "recommended" here and not required. The manual also states that the oil must meet or exceed the required API service categories. Therefore other viscosities will apply.

The oil change intervals are also "recommended". But if you don't do them, they will stiff you out of the warranty. Every dealer is different. There are no doubt some dealers that will use this against you.

The argument with the OCI is that there really isn't any other alternative... except for the number of months. Plus, if you don't change your oil regularly, you should be hit over the head anyway for slowly killing your engine! :D

Oh I totally agree with you. I'm just pointing out that some dealers are weasels and they will nit pick at ANYTHING to get out of warranty work. Just have to be careful.
I'm glad we have a place like MoT that seems to be a trustworthy dealer.

Thanks everyone.
Small price to pay.
Sorta sucks since I'm probably going to end up parking the car in the garage for most of the winter since I'm moving to a five minute walk from work.
Going to not going to be much mileage between these next two oil changes.
At this rate, I'm going to have my 24,000 checkup at 1,200km

oops, 12,000K, not 1,200K.
Want to buy it? It'll go a long way towards a MS3. Or a slightly bigger downpayment on the house.
