Avoid Compton and Long Beach.

I was there last year this time for a cousin's wedding. I didn't find it to be anything special. L.A. is a dirty hole IMO. Hollywood was admittedly very nice (exactly as I expected, including the high prices). If you've never been than I would definately suggest going and seeing as much as possible.

Newport is pretty nice. A bit expensive to each lunch there but pretty nice to watch the boats coming and going.

Say Hi to Tessa and Chase. If you see Cami, can you kick her in the teeth for me? :D

I've been to LA several times to visit family, I think the last time I was there was 4 years ago.* The place is huge, renting a car is a must.* Long Beach is fine, Compton is fine, heck, Watts is fine too.* Sure there are flare ups of violence, but that happens in any major city in North America.* There's really nothing spectacular in LA aside from all of the "touristy" attractions - Hollywood Blvd, Rodeo Drive, Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach, etc.*(for me the place to be is in the Bay Area).* If you've never been, LA a definite "must see".* Try driving up the Pacfiic Coast Highway to Malibu in your convertible...should be a nice drive. Shopping is good, Beverly Centre, Del Amo Fashion Mall, South Bay Galleria.*

Kudos on the Bay area!
The drive from San Francisco along the coast on HWY 1 is fantastic.

US101 - Pacific Coast Highway all the way. Going south on your left are the mountains and the right shows you the Pacific Ocean.
Drove from San Francisco down to L.A. stopped off in Montery and Carmel. The wife got pretty sick in the car because of the constant turns and breaking of the road. Totally safe drive but many love to push the cars. For those that love driving a manual the drive is a kick in the ass.

How long is the drive?

From San Francisco down to Carmel would be about 3.5 hrs. This is the more beautiful part of the highway. After Carmel you have at most an hour before it starts to look like a regular highway. Then it's about 4 hours to L.A. There's more of the highway that runs north from San Francisco but I've never travelled it.
The Nappa Valley kicks ass too.

I travel in and out of California pretty regularly for business. As a whole, I prefer N. Cali (San Francisco, San Jose, etc.). SoCal is still nice though.
As for your drive time from location to location. Take what the online maps, and add about 50%, CAli traffice is insane.
