SBMONKEY, did you go?* How was it?* How were the seminars?* Were there any deals to be had?
I'm not SBMonkey but I went.* I've been going for several years always with free tix.
In my opinion, I would never go unless I got in for free.* It's not really worth it and it always surprises me to see people pay for tix at the booth.
Most of the seminars are very introductory.* It's usually a lead-in to get you to sign up for Henry's Scool of Imaging classes. * I haven't found any super good deals at the show...they look like regular price to me* (especially at Henry's booth.* maybe I'm not looking hard enough) ::)
The booths I'm usually interested in (Henry's & Canon) are always packed and although you eventually get served it lacks the one-on-one quality service.* Might be better off just going to Henry's downtown (or any large camera store) on a regular day for free.
But even with that said, I would probably continue going if I get free tix.* ;D

Xerox pretty much summed it up. It wasn't a very exciting event, personally. The seminars are introductory and gives you enough to want a little more. The Flash and Lighting class sounds interesting. I might sign up for that workshop sometime later on. There were stages where they gave tips and live examples of portrait lighting, studio lighting, etc. Prices were normal like Xerox said. There were some discounted tripods. hehehe. Sigma also had a portrait contest where you take a photo of their model and get a chance to win a portrait lens of your choice.
I wouldn't spend $10 to go to it either. :D Free is good!
Oh, and lots of people were standing along the airport fence taking photos of planes landing... I drove under a jumbo jet as it was coming down and holy crap it's a bit uneasy having that thing coming down on top of you. lol. I was in the wrong lane and the area had too many cars parked there already. Gonna try stopping there this weekend to take some photos. :D

They usually have those in conjunction with the online comp. tix. I've been getting those for the last several years. You can also get comp. tix by going into Henrys and asking nicely. Depending on the sales guy they might give you one. That (hopefully) doesn't mean that there's no online version. They usually also send the link to the online comp. tix...taking a while this year though...so maybe they did stop.
Edit: Got my comp. tix in the mail today too. Yay.
damn.. I hope there is an online version as well. But I think I'll go into the store and politely ask. I want to look at camera anyways :chuckle

Put it this way, I will only go if it is free.
I don't know if the new bodies will be available, if anything, the Nikon D90 may be there since they are available in store for purchase.
Xerox

Same here. Would only go if it's free, but now-a-days I won't even go since it's too far for me.
I personally didn't find any amazing deals there. I bought a lens at the Henry's section once but it was regular price. From what I can tell most of the deal stuff are on old stock (end-of-life technology).
Various vendors are there so it's good if you want to look at what everyone has to offer. But it can get busy so you may have to fight your way to get a hold of that new lens or that new body to try out.
The free seminars are very introductory and is a lead-in to Henry's school of imaging (to which you need to pay). But if you're a virgin to all of this you may find it useful.
The seminars on portrait photography looks kinda interesting but I never sat through the entire session.
You can watch the "pros" post process an image using Photoshop - that's pretty cool.
Basically, if you're new to photography then you may like it. Just don't pay.
I have two tickets but i've been about 4 times now.
Last time I bought a camera bag, the $20 fujifilm bag that holds quiet a few lenses nicely and very secure.
I might drop by as I just started my new addiction for m42 lenses. I bought one from henry's outlet, Zeiss 50mm f2.8 for $5.

Anybody go to this? I went yesterday and I can't believe how many people where there. I guess I was expecting it to be pretty empty but damn. Parking was impossible and just getting into the parking lot took me 15 minutes. Well Everything was way too expensive in there with a max saving of like 5% or $20 wow. I tried a few Canon L series lens but I didn't really see anything special with them. I guess I was expecting alot more from them. Seems like they might have better coating on their lens, faster focus, quieter focus and a huge price tag. I then went to the Sigma and tried a few of there and they were just as good for half the price from the 3 photos I took with each lens. Well it was fun but really busy!

I missed the show.
My dad went on Friday and he didn't find anything interesting.
I only had time to go on Saturday, and when I arrived I didn't even get into the parking lot because it was full.

I went on Friday evening after work. For the most part, it was the same as the years previous, but they added an area in the back for their pro/rental affiliate, Headshots. Am I mistaken or was there a Sigma 200-500 f/2.8 on display? I didn't buy anything, although I was hoping to pick up a Think Tank Speed Racer bag.
cereal83
10-20-2008, 10:37 AM
I think Sigma had every current lens in their display. They had everything, a Nikon section and then the Canon Section. They had a tripod I wanted to pick up but it was like $299 for the legs and then $175 for the head when I can go online and get it for $300 shipped and with customs

Like most things if you go in with high expectations you're bound to be disappointed. Using "pro" series equipment like L glass does not automatically make you a pro. Your pictures are not going to magically turn out amazing. They are just better tools to help the photographer but ultimately it's still upto the photograper to create the photograph.
You are correct in that the higher cost is attributed to higher quality & control and here are some more in addition to your list: not just the coating but higher optical quality of glass, better overall build quality, weather seals on most, constant aperture, larger aperture, hood included, pouch included and of course the luxury of having that red stripe on the barrel of your lens. All of this makes for a more enjoyable user experience when using L glass from day to day. Obviously it also improves image quality (corner to corner sharpness, more lively colours, tones, contrast). It may not be noticeable immediately (especially if all you have is the camera LCD to judge from) but once you get accustomed to the IQ of L glass, you will notice the difference if you go back to regular lenses (kinda like when DVD first came out, I wasn’t that surprised but once accustomed to it you can clearly see that VHS was inferior). This is not to say that non-L lenses are garbage. There are some very good ones (ie. most non-L primes are pretty good).
With Sigma, the one thing I really worry about with them is quality control. You either get a sharp copy or you don’t not to mention back-focusing issues. However, there service is apparently very good if you ever want to swap for a sharper copy. The secondary thing I worry about is the chip they use in there lenses. There is a small chance that the lens you buy today may not work with future camera bodies unless you get the lens re-chipped.

I guess I was expecting the shots I took at the show from those lens to be amazing or something. I looked at them and there was nothing special about it. It just didn't feel like I was holding a $1900 lens when I tried out a 17-45 2.8 L. I guess I am in touch with reality now which is a good thing because I will think alot better.
Yes I know the build quality is better on the L Series and thats one reason as to why I wanted it but its mostly for the aperture that it can do. 3.5-5.6 is poo when you can get a 2.8. The sigma stuff feeled the same. Like I took pics and looked at them when I got home. I didn't see a visual difference except for the wide angle.
Next thing I need to work on is getting a full framed camera. With my Xsi, at 10 mm with the 1.6 magnification, it doesn't show true wide screen which is what I mostly want to take photos with.
I am glad I went because I did learn something and even today I learnt something but I just wasn't happy with the savings they were offering.

17-45mm f/2.8 L? To my knowledge no such lens exists. Perhaps you are thinking of the 17-40mm f/4 L which is about $700.00 and a 16-35mm f/2.8 L MkII which is about $1,500.00. Anyway, the cost cannot be justified by everyone since needs, budget, ROI is different for all.
10mm with 1.6x crop is 16mm. You want even wider than that?!
If you go FF the options are 14mm f/2.8 L which is like $2,000.00, a 15mm f/2.8 fish-eye, a 16-35mm f/2.8 L, or 17-40 f/4 L. The last two are probably the popular choice which brings you back to 16mm that you are already getting with your Xsi (or you loose 1mm with the 17-40mm).
Basically, you already have the widest you can get at the most economical price.

Sorry, it was a 24-70mm 2.8. He wrote down the price at first he wrote it was $1900 but then he scratched it out and put $1500.
When I took a pic at 10 mm with my camera, it looked wide but not really. Maybe I was in the wrong setting to show the wide angle or took a picture of the wrong thing to get the effect of wide angle.
I didn't realize if I go ff I limit my options even more or it becomes extremely expensive.
Thanks for your posts. It does help. I was thinking I was going to have to spend $4k to get wide angle with a good camera. I should just be happy with what I have and save for a Canon 10-22 and learn how to use it properly.
Thanks
