I've always been curious what "warranty" I would get if I had a cold air intake (let's say the MS CAI) at a Mazda dealership?

What would I be covered for that I wouldn't be, if say I was to do it myself or have Lockdown do the install?

Warenty level is 'Green' which states, "MAZDASPEED "Green" Performance Accessories must be specifically approved by Mazda for their particular application. These parts are warranted for the first 12-months/12,000 miles from the date of purchase, excluding labor."

So the actual CAI is warrantied against any defects "IF and ONLY IF" its installed by a Mazda dealership? But what if my CAI throws a CEL, is that covered?

From my understanding, the mazdaspeed one is under warranty for a year if installed at a mazda dealership

of course they arne't going to warranty anything other than mazda parts.

I think this would depend on what dealership you are dealing with and what part. When I installed an Injen CAI on my Protege5 myself, I had the dealership praise me on the install while I was having brake warranty work done. You can't really expect Mazda to have a blanket policy on parts installed by other people since some of the work I've seen people do on their own cars makes you wonder if they've ever worked with a screwdriver let alone a wrench.

If you're that concerned about warranty and are not confident in work being done (either by yourself or another shop) then ask your Mazda dealership if they will do the work for you and warranty it, in writing. Some dealerships are good that way, some not so.....

oh sorry, I believe that warrenty is for the CAI itself.
In regards to your engine and what not, I believe it's basically

The way I see it, (although my interpretation doesn't matter)
If the CAI is still under it's 1year warrenty and something on the CAI breaks or messes up and as a result your engine gets blown, then your covered for CAI and engine. (only if it's been installed properly)

i had the MS CAI installed at westown
i asked them specifically if it would be warrantied if something went wrong with the engine on account of the intake

they assured me it would

i have nothing in writing, but they have been good to me in general (sometimes it requires a bit of a fight but still in the end we always come to terms)

i am guessing that if installed by a dealer
the part is covered for one year, and if an engine problem occurs, it would be covered, probably for as long as the car is warantied.

i also think joe said (though it is not relevant to your case)
that the part would be warrantied for the full time of the warranty if installed prior to initial pick up of a new car.
(we are talking about the MS CAI)

i had the tech racing CAI before
i had a fried MAF sensor and the dealership relpaced it for me under warranty, however i think they would have been withing their rights to not do it as well
