Alright, the wife and I are ready for some new cell phones and pretty much have it narrowed down to the SE 810i. First off does anybody here have this phone? I've only ready positive reviews about it, and since we are coming from a SE we know what we're getting into.

Now, I think we will likely take advantage of the hardware upgrade that Rogers offers as our contract just expired and are willing to sign up for a new one. Having said that, how are the prices of phones at Pac Mall? Can a brown dude just walk in there and get a good price, or am I going to get ripped? I'd only consider going this route as there are a few unlocked phones we also like that I know we'll find at PacMall.

Before anyone mentions, I've already spent more than enough time on HoFo reading up on the phone ;)

rogers.. new 3yr contract 199.. bah.. do you have a corp acct? tier AA gives 100$ discount.. so it would be 100bux.. plus an admin fee.. BOOO.. anwyay.. just tell them u want to quit.. and say you want it free.. my friend just scored that with them.. what happened to getting it cheap on your trip?

You could also use the forthcoming WNP as some leverage in your negotiation with Rogers. Whether it will work or not I don't know but no harm in trying I don't think!

Well my wife and I were thinking of picking up a second Nano for our trip so we could each listen to our own music and then I just figured that since the phones double as MP3 players perhaps that was the better route to go. I'm still gonna look there and if I find anything good I'll buy it and either sell the 810 or the one(s) I pick up!

mazidane, what's WNP?

hmm

last time i checked this phone was having problems on rogers. mainly just dropped calls and the locked ability to use mp3's as ringtones.

however the new firmware (which was supposed ot be coming, havent followed this phone) was going to address that problem. i said address not fix.

other then that its probably the best all around phone but everyone has one.

Really, I've done a ton of research on the phone over the past few weeks and the only issues that I've come across is that there is a slight hiss during quiet moments or between songs when using the MP3 player and that the protective coating on the camera lens is quite easy to scratch, however it has no bearing on the quality of the images for whatever reason.

As for the phone being common, that isn't a concern for us.

Anyone know of a good smartphone that not only runs Windows PPC v5 but also has good phone reception?

TheProfessor
10-26-2006, 08:02 AM
Alright, what's a smartphone?

And for anyone who cares, some Rogers insiders on HoFo have leaked that on November 15th the SE K790 will be released, and to make the W810 more attractive they will either lower the price or include 5GB worth of memory!!! Looks like I'm waiting a few weeks to see what happens.

Our sales manager Rui has a cell phone guy that comes in and brings some very unique phones. if you don't want something that everyone and their mother has this is the guy to call. He brought 2 phones yesterday Dolce and Gabana RAZR in gold and the other phone was an LG that was really nice can't remember the model. He gets the from HK.

Let me know if you want his number.

Thanks for the offer Flip but I have a feeling his prices are a little more than we're willing to spend. For us the phone is just that, a phone. If it has MP3 capabilities and/or a decent camera that's just a plus. The one thing a phone is NOT for us is a fashion statement. We keep our phones for 2-3 years. Was the LG phone the guy had the 'chocolate' model? That thing looks amazing!

It looks and perform excellent, thats what i've read, i was thinking to give that phone to my wife as a chrismast gift.* *;D

EDIT: as for the SE 810; meth just got it and i heard him saying that he upgrade the software or something like that, not sure, better ask him.

EDIT 2: I have a Razor from rogers, the black one, does any one know if i can upgrade the software to make it work like the grey one that is distributed by Telus???

You cant go wrong with SE
My last 4 phones were SE and never ever *knock on wood* had a problem with them
I guess the W810 is the cousin to the W600 (which I have from Rogers as well) and the performance is super fast

**JUST AN FYI** SE offers FREE support; I flashed my phone with upgraded firmware straight from SE's website

TheProfessor

Woot, just announced, as of November 1st all W810's will come with a 1GB card in the box and a mail away form for a free 4GB card!!!

Also, the new K790 is now on the Rogers website for purchase or HUP, it doesn't come with a memory card but you can send away for a free 1GB card after November 1st.

W810i = MAD SEEEEG... right majic?

The W800 was a hell of a phone and the 810 is basically the same phone but with better reception :)

The only thing I don't like about it is that the camera lense is always exposed whereas on the W800 you had a cover on it.

The K790 is a very nice phone... slightly bigger but very nice. I bought one for my brother in law for 500 unlocked... and yes he gave me the money first.... he lives in Montreal.

If HUP stands for Handware Upgrade, let me know how to get this done. I was on the phone with Rogers for an hour today, fighting for it.

TheProfessor

HUP does in fact stand for a hardware upgrade, and it can only be done under certain conditions:

1) You are willing to sign up for a 2 or 3 year contract (the price listed online of $249 assumes a 3 year)
2) You have not done a HUP for at least 12 months, and depending on your spending they may want you to have been with them even longer, though I've read conflicting stories on this
3) Wait at least until November 2nd as that is when the memory card promo kicks in.......you will get to mail away for a free 1GB memory card for the K790 or a 4GB card for the W810

I was told this morning that the K790 does not apply to HUP...

Somebody stop me before a crime happens, and you read about me in the paper.

TheProfessor

That may be true, though I have never heard that they restrict which phones you can apply your HUP to. Your best bet is to ask somebody who knows more than I do, which is almost anyone over at www.howardforums.com :)

just a littler correction/addition :) AFAIK,

some plans allow you a 'free' HUP every 12months and some every 24 months
you can HUP after 3 or 6 months
every month before your free HUP period, you'd have to pay 10$ more

I have this really bad feeling that everyone and their mother will be getting the W810i shortly, and that doesn't bother me so long as it doesn't delay the delivery of the 4GB card. I want to make sure I have those in time for our trip in December!

Kevin@nextmod
10-31-2006, 10:59 AM
There is not much point of the 4 gb card unless you have your phone constantly charging or you have a few battery packs with you.

Ooooo but wait.....i remember you can choose to NOT turn on your phoen to listen to mp3s. When you turn on the phone it lets you choose either turn on phone for mp3 only or turn on phone. I think that will save some batteries i hope.

TheProfessor
10-31-2006, 11:16 AM
Pearly, you can turn off the 'phone' functions so it is basically just an MP3 player, and by doing so the battery life is supposed to be quite good.

TheProfessor
11-01-2006, 02:14 PM
So the offer is now posted on the Rogers site......you can get the W810i on a HUP for only $149.99 and it will come with a 1GB card in the box plus you mail away for an extra 4GB card which should take 1-2 weeks to arrive. I tried to go and check out the white one today (of course) and everybody is sold out of the white :(

In case anyone cares, I ended up getting the SE W810i yesterday for $149.99 with 5GB worth of memory! I was a little pissed because we wanted to upgrade both the phones on our family plan and because we are low spenders for wireless services they said we had to pay $299.99 plus $35 admin fee for the second one. So I just took home the one phone, called Rogers up, was extremely polite with them, explained how I didn't think that was fair considering how much money I drop on internet and cable charges. The woman asked me to hold on, came back 30 seconds later and said that she would give us the second phone for the exact same deal as the first! So the second phone is on it's way to us via UPS. We ended up picking one white and one black.

The wife and I always seem to exceed our monthly minutes by around 30-40 and it ends up costing us like $5-7 each month. So I also asked the CSR if there was anything she could do, and again, she put me on hold, came back 30 seconds later and said that she has added an extra 50 minutes per month to our account for free.

So long story short, Rogers comes through again for us 8)

Anyone here know what might be up with my Sony Ericsson W810i?

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?p=8897735

I picked up the phone slightly used in a private sale.

It's originally bought in Hong Kong and was not updated with any new firmwares by the original owner.

I've had the phone for almost three months now and the display has been acting up when I try to display pictures/videos, take pictures/videos, or play certain games.

From a computer perspective, the video drivers are buggy?

Even tho just the other night after flashing to a supposed more stable firmware (not one of the newer ones) with PhoneXS, today the display problem returned.

Here's a video I recorded of the problem when I try to use the digital camera, go to find pictures, and then try to play Midnight Poker;

http://media.putfile.com/Sony-Ericsson-W810i-Display-Problem

.
.
.

Looks like I just have a bad phone from the get-go. Same problems occuring after flashing as before flashing. On top of the above explained and video-proven display issue, I also get the WSOD on occasion.

From standby mode, I try to "wake up" the phone and it'll just display a white screen, fully lit-up. It won't do anything but just show that white screen. Eventually it'll fade out into what seems like regular standby mode. BUT even if I tried to send myself a text msg (ie. from Rogers website), the phone won't acknowledge reception of it (altho I can hear the GSM frequencies buzzing when the phone is nearby speakers).

Normally I'd just shut off the phone or remove battery, wait a minute or two and get the phone back on without issue.

Just a few mins passed and I tried to wake up the phone ... it worked. No WSOD. This phone is pretty messed. http://www.fmvperformance.com/forum_items/Smileys/default/thinking.gif
