Rain sensor UNappreciation here

Last night driving home a giant massive rock the size of my fist hit my windshiled while traveling at 130km/h
So friggin loud I thought the windshield would've broke. But ALAS! It did its job

Anyhooooooooo
Can anyone recommend any places around Dixie/401 or even Hamilton that can do a good job
Should I take this to a reputable shop like Apple Auto Glass or can anyone do this?

Stupid sensors >:(
A co-worker paid over $500 to get his replaced

Apple Auto Glass is a well know shop and you can alway have ur warranty not having to worry about them going out of business

What does this have to do with the wipers? Aren't the sensors in the RVM for those?

Can you make an insurance claim for it? Might be able to get it replaced for free.

The rain sensor for the auto wipers is actually part of the windshield ;)

That sucks. I always thought it was a stupid design to have the sensor built right into the glass. But I guess it needs to be that way for whatever reason.

Insurance would cover it (provided you don't have a glass coverage exclusion) but it doesn't make sense claiming it if your Comprehensive deductible is $500 and the cost of replacement is $500.

Yeah I definately dont want to deal with insurance for something like this

I just got a quote for $300 with rain sensor included from Star Auto Glass
Not bad

I know. I asked whether the sensor was in the RVM or not. I thought it might be.

You can buy aftermarket kits to put rain sensing wipers in any car. They have a little sensor you stick to the inside of the windshield so it doesn't have to be built in. Just makes these replacements that much more expensive and really, as far as damage repairs go, windshields are fairly common.

The reason I thought the sensor might be in the RVM is I had previously looked up the kits to put in the HomeLink mirror and noticed that they sell a different mirror for cars with rain sensing wipers than those without. See here: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2 F&fkr=1&from=R8&satitle=mazda+3+homelink+mirror&category0=

The rain sensor is in the window, but the sensor is routed through the base of the rear view mirror. That's why you need a different rear view mirror for cars with sensors and cars without.

I went to Speedy for around $750 tax in, MoT quote $800+taxes, so I doubt $300 can do the job. May be glass only??

MAZDA Kitten

You probably got OEM glass (Made in Germany)

I got a quote for OEM glass with sensor for $600, $400 for Pilkengton (sp?) glass ("top of the line" they use them in Jags, BMW's etc), and $360 for Guardian (Made in USA)
These are all with the sensor built into it

This is important - the glass *HAS TO HAVE* the sensor BUILT into the windshield.

Stay away from a place called No Deductible Autoglass - this guy is soooooooo pushy and kept calling me all day to tell me to claim it through my insurance. Literally he would call me every hour. At the end of the day his price magically dropped when I told him I'm going with another company.

Can anyone chime in on this? Is it benefital for me to claim it with my insurance? He said he would pay my deductible. I know this would be a claim against me but can it turn around and bite me in the ass come renewal time? He kept telling me that its not my fault a rock hit my windshield so the insurance company can't fault me for it and can't increase my premiums because of this.

Any truth?

I wouldn't believe anyone who's just trying to sell you something like that. He's not "paying" your deductable. He's just charging that much more from the insurance company.

I'm not really sure how comprehensive claims work but I'm pretty sure if you have enough of them, your rates go up. I don't think there's any concept of "fault" involved, though hopefully someone else can clarify that.

The cheaper place was someone reffered me to from work called STAR AUTO GLASS (quoted $250 with rain sensor)
The place that I feel the best about is called SPEEDY GONAZALES... talk to a PEDRO he's a very nice guy. Guardian (USA made) windshield installed taxes in for $360

I went to Ontario Mazda because they broke my window seal so while I was there I asked. I am pretty good with the guys there and they told me about the crazy mark ups they have at dealerships so they recommened me to a place called FLASH and they are the same... $360 tax in.

One of my co-workers father in law owns an Apple Auto Glass and they can get me a 'brand new' OEM Mazda3 windshield that was taken off a brand new car (it has a 'pit' in it) for $250 CASH

That's not correct. You can have a million comprehensive claims and it won't affect your rates because they are always not at-fault.

MK - the only negative thing that can happen is if you claim for glass replacements too often, the insurance company will put a glass exclusion on your policy. It shouldn't hurt to have it done through insurance once.

Your info was greatly appreciated :)

I think I might as well just go through insurance then and get that guy to pay my deductible :)

Really? So if I just save up all the door dings and stone chips and stuff, I can then make one comprehensive claim and get it all repaired for the cost of my deductable with no penalty?

No penalty, but you have to pay a deductible for each occurence. No adjuster will believe that you got dings and chips on different parts of the car at the same time.

$390 + Tax with rain sensor at 'Auto Glass by GB' 416-243-5453, corner of Jane and Wilson. Had it done this week as required to trade in for the Mazdaspeed3. Small shop. All he does is winshields, so I imagine he knows what he's doing. Took 45 minutes. It's my second windshield with him (1 with previous car).

There is the blackout area above where the rearview mirror is. Lots of little balck dots. As soon as I got in the car, I had to ask myself... "is that the same as the last one". I think it is... if not, it is damn close! I couldn't tell the difference by memory. Personally, after day 1, it felt the same as the last.

You have to ask him for the one 'with' the rain sensor as well.

Most - if not all aftermarket glass replacement shops (including the one that MK was looking at) will pay your deductible for you.
