Five Alarm Fire Strikes Popular Yorkville Restaurant
Wednesday December 13, 2006

A huge blaze at one of Toronto's most famous nightspots is causing havoc in swanky Yorkville.

Flames broke out at the Sassafraz Restaurant on Cumberland Avenue near Bellair Street around 11:30am Wednesday. It was originally thought the blaze started in the woman's washroom, but now officials are focusing their sights on the kitchen. The cause isn't known.

Heavy black smoke drew attention to the problem and the fire quickly spread into a five-alarm conflagration. There are 29 vehicles on the scene, and at least 135 firefighters battling the stubborn blaze.

And it appears the damage is severe - there are fears the roof could collapse. But until the fire is out, it will be impossible to know the extent of the damage.

So far, the only report of injury is to local traffic. The streets surrounding Yorkville have been closed off, because authorities have needed to run extra hoses from Bay and Avenue Road, and it's feared cars running over them would squeeze off the water. Drivers are urged to avoid the area.

Sassafraz is best known for attracting Hollywood's elite and is a frequent venue for galas during the Toronto International Film Festival.

The whole building will go down. I was in the area this morning shortly after it started..... goddamn... it was like 9/11 all over again... I've never seen more fire trucks on one street in my whole life... Apparently, at one point, there were 29 firetrucks and almost 140 firefighters battling this fire.... There was smoke everywhere, it was hard to see, hard to breathe... And of course, the roads were covered in so much water that it was like a watermain blew up.

Definitely a sight to see.... too bad it was this place... I have been there a number of times over the years, they had the best martinis in town... now I need to find another good martini place.

Rumour has it that the fire was actually a grease fire, which would explain a few things.... that and the building is pretty old.

That's a pretty swanky place, been to the area many times, but never been inside. Too bad, Yorkville is a nice area to be, streets are narrow and parking is brutal during the day.

I thought they said the fire damage to the first floor was minimal but that it was really bad on the second and roof where the smoke came out?

I'm more inclinded to think that 100 fire fighters + hoses did alot of water dmg on their own
