I await Majic's responce to this! haha

normally i don't put up these opinion threads...as i usually research myself and get whatever on my own..but i thought id try this

in teh market for an upgraded sound card, and a 5.1 speaker set, to make this computer room multimedia friendly....i don't play games on my computer, but it'll be mainly for my tv tuner card/movies and music

i remember years ago the sound blaster live was the ish to have for a sound card....but what about nowadays?

lookin to stay in around 50-$100 for the compouter speakers and around 40-60 for the sound card....

never was really in tune with these items for computers as i am with all the rest..

I'm not to sure what you'd find in that price range, but I do have one piece of advice. Behind Alpine Hyundai (the little street between Ford and McDonalds) there is a computer parts warehouse with great prices. Simply go down that street (away from ottawa) and turn into the no exit street on the left at the bend. Can't remember the name of the place at the moment.

a lot of onboard audio is set up for 5.1 6.1 or even 7.1 and the quality is good enough (if you're not an audiophile)

buy my 5.1 speakers (http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=15985) (yours for just 50bux) :) use onboard sound and buy a sub since mine's busted.. and you're done :)

back in 1998 or so i bought SB live digital.. and that was the LAST daughter card i ever bought.. i use onboard audio and it does the trick..

the high end stuff will cost you a pretty penny and the mid range or low end will be comparable to onboard but it'll still cost you whereas the other one is free.. your choice my frugal man ;)

these are the speakers i recommend. There cheap as in price and with decent bass and sound quality. I bought a set of these for my lil bro and they were worth it. Wait to see if you can find them on specials at tigerdirect. I've seen them go for about $68.99.
