love it.. tells me if i have to GUN it or if i should lay off the accelerator :)

what pisses me off is university avenue.. 4 damn lanes and they can't give us a green wave for more than 2 ****ing lights.. and sometimes you have to exceed the speed limit in order to make it (barely)

As a downtown pedestrian, I can tell you that they are awesome.

Reasoning for the timer was also for the people who have disabilities or what not and cannot walk fast. it lets them know how much time they have before the traffic lights will (eventually) turn red (in their direction).

I love the countdown...like majic said, it gives you and idea as to whether or not you can make the light before it changes.

Yeah, I like them too both when driving and when walking. Can't complain about more information...

Some areas in Pickering had 'em over 4 years ago.

I believe hearing somewhere that they cost slightly more than the old ones. However they would be more cost effective in the long run because they are LED's and will not require to be changed as soon/often as the old incandesent ones.

sure they'll be cheaper to run but there's the retrofit/initial cost.. when i heard it on the radio (about 6 months back) the cost was ridiculous.. 3.5M for 500 intersections.. that's 7K per intersection.. so about 1K per light..

oh i found the link..

I like the whole idea of a countdown, but I agree the cost is unsubstantiated considering it is not conclusive that the LED countdown lights prevent injuries or deaths.

I like the countdown a lot, BUT, can take peoples attention OFF the intersection if they are watching the countdown instead of cars and pedestrians.
Gotta go, 7, 6, 5... weeeeeeee!!!:chuckle

Me and my buddy were discussing this the other day.

First, we had to guess when the Green would turn Amber. Then we had to guess when the Flashing Hand would change to an Amber. Now we have to guess when the countdown changes to an Amber. It's all mind games.

Plus I find the countdown hard to read sometimes. The single digits all look the same to me.

Well they are not designed for drivers... But I do love 'em! Saves on gas as when you know you cant make it, you can let off earlier instead of gunning it hoping to make the light.
