I thought about that, I am 6'1" and I would have a hard time to reach it. I did discuss with the company that manufactures these, they would have to do a whole redesign and I would need a huge business case to support that :(

One can always be added on, I might be able to do something like that if I build up the neve to open mine :p

Did a little research here... and Yes... The garmin system will send video and audio signals to the screen.. However, the Garmin system is relying on the touchscreen feature of the kenwood flip out screen. So long story short.... wont work functionally.

If someone doesn't already have a gps unit, they can get the Garmin GVN 52 as it will work with this screen

I have not tried it can be done of course but you need to take the unit apart which is easy its the putting back together which might get tricky.

Wicked! With that... and this Garmin unit... you could pretty much recreate the factory nav system! And the Garmin engine is probably better than the OEM...

Exactly, cheaper then most of the options out there, looks 100% stock and allows you to hook up another two items like a T.V Receiver or Xbox/PS2 and allows you to keep your stock headunit in place :)

Looking further into it, I notice that the GVN52 only outputs in NTSC composite video.

I'm wondering if going with a car-pc would be the better option.

As cool as a touchscreen version would be, I'm not sure how practical the location would be. It's great for viewing, but probably not so great for touching.

Maybe mount a touch pad somewhere more convenient...

Devin98
01-31-2007, 09:55 AM
The GVN52 out puts to RCA also, that will allow it to be hooked up to the screen no problem. The touch screen would not be practical since you will need to lean forward to touch the screen. A touch pad or there is another device that I will try to find the name of work well.

...

So what's the problem? Composite video = RCA's which is what every screen at least uses. This screen has 3 composite video inputs ;-)

I was just going to point this out. Composite = single RCA :)

It's not that it won't work... it's that you won't get the best image quality. With a carputer you'll be outputting in RGB and getting a perfect image.

I wonder if instead of a touchpad, there's some sort of i-drive like gizmo that would act as a mouse to the carputer? That would be cool...

EvilEric

Wireless track ball mouse. That is what I want.

3GFX
01-31-2007, 03:12 PM
Mold it into your cupholder spot. You'd totally be kickin the i-drive. You'd practically be a BMW to because you got rid of the cupholders ;)

Wild Weasel

I think I'd rather have a touchpad than a trackball though.

What I'm picturing is a knob that you could turn for the side-to-side movement and maybe push forward and back for the up-down movement and press down on it to click.

It would just be really cool for this application. Who knows... if it worked like that it might be completely annoying and impractical... but isn't that what people say about the i-drive as well? :)

3GFX
01-31-2007, 04:59 PM
I-drive is easy and useful. People just need to sit in it and get used to it.

You can do it for under $1500

Monitor - $830CDN
Garmin - $400 new ($300 used)

Total around - $1200

And you can do much more with the screen then just the GPS :p
