I'm in the process of moving to Toronto and was told that if I show the insurance company my driving record, it can lower my insurance. Any truth to this?

Yup, it's true.

I don't see how.
The only thing that can happen is they might raise your rate if you have any convictions on your abstract.
But don't worry - they will check your abstract out when you apply for insurance on their own
Besides - By law, you have like 30 days to change over to an Ontario licence and the MTO will transfer any convictions that they are permitted to to your new abstract. The insurance company will then see that.
Unless you are referring to proof of how long you've had your licence....

No convictions...clean record...In Manitoba we have "merits" that are given every 2 yrs to drivers that have a clean record. The max is 5 and it lowered my insurance by approx. 25%.
Correct me it I'm wrong but Ontario doesn't have a gov't based insurance like Manitoba therefore I have to insure my car through a independant insurance company...
Does proof of how long you've had your license make a difference?

sure it does, but you are not gonna like the differences in insurance prices regardless of how good ur record is!
welcome to toronto!

Start shopping around. Start here: www.kanetix.ca
That will give you some quotes from different companies.
Good luck. I guarantee your rates in Toronto will be no where near as low as your rates were in Manitoba. ;)

Thx for the info..I did the kanetix.ca thing and Belairdirect and RBC gave the best rate @ approx $1600/yr which is pretty close to what I pay here in Mb. The big difference is that I have $100 deductible in Mb while $500 in the quotemaker :( . It prb helped that I've had my license for more than 10 yrs

try insurancehotline (http://insurancehotline.com/scripts/startquote.pl?action=step2&LOB=AUTO)and pcinsurance (http://www.pcinsurance.ca/ROCEN/AI_home_selector.asp?referid=leftnav)
some people will tell you not to deal with PC unless you like dealing with ppl in India when it comes to claim time.. i guess you get what you pay for.. meloche monnex is a good one if you're an alumni of some university but for me they were twice as expensive as my current ins co.

Don't go with PC - go with Scottish and York instead if you like their rates. They have exactly the same rates because they are both ran by Aviva. And S&Y has much better service. I know some more things about PC, but I don't want to post them here...

i am with S&Y.. PC's rates were comparable or a tad less but b/c my parents have their car insured and the house as well we get the multiline/multi vehicle discount..
i think if you were on your own policy with no multi-xxx discounts pc MIGHT be the froogal choice.. some ppl are all about the $ .. what the bottom line is so that is an alternative.. pc and rbc are usually the best rates for newest drivers.. (from my experience when i was looking for quotes)

You definitely get what you pay for. Not crazy about talking to people overseas when it comes to claim time.
Obviously I would like to get the best bang for the buck so to speak. Adding tenants insurance to that should make a bit of a difference too.
