I have been with Rogers for as long as I can remember...from when HS just came out and they had the grey bricks :p and everything was fine and dandy up until 6-12 months ago.

But recently they have been pissing me off more and more, almost on a daily basis.

About 3-5 months ago Rogers started traffic-shaping in my area, and I was able to get around it in 2mins by using port 1720 and encryption, about 2
days ago, that is no longer the case. DL anything with BitTorrent/P2P is pointless.

DNS problems and routing issues are a daily pain in the ass, and it seems to be getting worse, more recently some drops as well.

Calling the bastids, proves that their techs have no clue what they are talking about (I work in IT, and its not like I sit on a high chair, but some of the BS I hear comming out of their mouth makes my eye twitch)!

I have tried Bell DSL in the past, wasn't that great. Today it seems they are even worse from what I see on the forums (dslreports.com), so I don't plan crawling back to them, especially when they have a 30gb cap on new subscribers.

I have heard great things about Teksavvy.com DSL
...5MB down 800 up, no traffic shapeing whatsoever, no blocked ports, 100gb monthly limit if you are on their more redundant Network, better pings for gameing and all, or you can choose Unlimited to be on their slightly "crappier" network but still no complaints. If I were to try them out, I would have to buy a DSL modem....which I don't mind as long as they turn out to be from what I have been hearing.

I have also heard of 3WEB, nothing possitive tho :P

Now what are my options, or what can you guys reccomend, anyone with Teksavvy??? Any input on the above?

BTW SHAW, MountainCable, Cogeco are not available in my area.

Thnx

wtom, I think I'll definatelly be giving Teksavvy a go.... I hear nothing but praise on the forums, especially their TechSupport, there are employees that are openly answering questions/concerns on dslreports.com.

5 Meg Service $29.95/month 5M/800K Either the Unlimited or Residential 100GB...same price. (+4 for Static IP)

There is a GB on SpeedTouch modems on Dslreports.com. The SpeedTouch516 seems to be a winner with a lot of users with Bell and other DSL providers, especially with poor line conditions and should be pretty cheap. This is a second groupbuy in the last couple of days, they don't list the price for competition reasons, but send 'em an e-mail if you are interested. From teksavvy and others its about $125...the GB is a lot less!

Anyone else want to chime in?

TekSavvy seems to be getting some good reviews at www.canadianisp.com so you might wanna give them a shot. The modems are pretty much transferable between DSL ISP's so you should be okay with that.

I think next month Rogers is raising their prices about a $1, you should see it on your last billing period.

You can use either that or another change made recently. Search the forums, and you will find that you can easily get out of your contract.

Give it a try, because if we are paying $45-55/month we should definatelly be getting more for our money. Just look at what you could get in Quebec for the same cash!

Just got a letter in the mail from Rogers. They're raising prices on their Internet Hi-Speed services. It's only by a buck but **** THEM. Their reason for the price increase? OPERATION-****IN-AL COSTS...

BULL SHIT!

I'm glad I'm on the third group buy for the SpeedTouch modem cuz oh hell yeah I'm cancelling with this piece of shit ISP called Rogers. Same service, MUCH faster speeds, no bandwidth cap, no contract, almost 25% lower on the mazda****ing monthly cost.

ROGERS SUCKS!!!

ADSL MODEM "SpeedTouch 516" amongst others are available for cheap in a Group Buy (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,17880354) set up on DSLReports.com

I suggest you peeps on Rogers Hi-Speed get your ass outta that ISP (if you have access to DSL in your area) and get on Techsavvy. MUCH better service, MUCH better support for when you need it, and HALF the cost ... and NO GOD DAMN BANDWIDTH CAP.

Operational costs my ass ... it's all that extra nonsense they get involved with that drive their costs up. ASSHATs.

For me at least, Teksavvy >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rogers

Paying quite a bit less per month, no contract, no monthly bandwidth cap, awesome customer CARE, and this is a lot faster than those comparably-priced packages from Robbers or Hell (so called "Lite" packages)!

Bumping up an old thread...

Does anyone know what the typical installation fee would be. I don't have a high speed internet modem or anything, I got dial-up :(.

And if I want to be able to access the internet from different locations in my house...

would I need a second modem??
Can run the wires through my walls instead??
or would a wireless router be a better route?

thanks.

SilentJay

To get high speed via DSL, there is no installation fee. Go and get a refurb 2wire modem from CanadaComputers ($22?), and sign up with an ISP (i'd recommend TekSavvy myself). If you want multiple ports or connections in your house, get a wireless router ($30-$60). You can either run wires in your walls, or get a wireless adapter ($15-$45) for your computers.

Wireless is great, but do your research before you set it up, or get someone (like meee :)) to advise/set up for you.

Zubbie

So basically all I gotta do is...(for one computer set up)

1. go to CanadaComputers and get a 2wire modem
2. then call up an ISP and tell them I want to sign up,

then I'm good to go?

Do your research if you plan to download as Rogers does not like Bittorent or anything similiar to it. Check with Bell too...

Note: Rogers CSR's sux bit time

What area are you in? The website apparently has been known to be slightly out of date, so you may want to call up their support/customer service line and make sure anyway. One thing, might I add, is that Teksavvy has the best/most knowledgable support people i've encountered in the industry. This means quite a bit coming from someone who's worked in the tech support area for years, and regularly deal with them now as a sys admin.

If Teksavvy is totally unavailable to you, you can look into other DSL alternatives such as Acanac. They've been getting "alright" reviews, and are even cheaper than Teksavvy.

You'll also need DSL filters (don't get them from Teksavvy). Just go into a Bell World and ask for some. 99% of the time, if you're not asking for 35 filters, they won't give it a second thought and just hand you some. Thats SilentJay's el-cheapo-magnifico tip of the day :)

Hmm.. People with Teksavvy - what are your opinions? Speeds? Downtime? I'm with a Quebec company for the same price. There is downtime like every evening and their tech support is atrocious.

Do you have to have a contract with Teksavvy?

Yep yep - good people to deal with. I think its been down once for me, and it was for... 2 hours? They're usually pretty good at warning you if the system is going to go down, and its usually at 3AM in the morning.

If you guys are really in to downloading movies/apps/games, you should try some type of usenet service such as www.usenetserver.com (http://www.usenetserver.com) and use Newsbin Pro for downloading. Id does involve an additional fee, but considering the speeds you acheive (sometimes up to 10mbits) it's well worth it.

Try it out for a month and you'll know what i mean... if you need help setting it up, PM me.

Loving TS! Mainly because I got lucky by being real close to one of those stations (getting full 5mbit/800kbit).

I have yet to notice any downtime. Been with them since March this year. Nothing but good words in terms of service both at an Internet level and support level.

No contract with TS that I know of. I'm just paying monthly and with their referral program, each person that you refer who signs up with them, you get $1 off your monthly fee.

Speed will depend on distance from the co-location. That said, downtown downtown is pretty well equipped. What area exactly?

I just got pwned. Tried to open a second Teksavvy account (this time at my condo) and they said Bell came back with FAILED when trying to set up the dry-loop. The phone lines are not owned by Bell ... first thought, which I later confirmed with Management (and is probably in the condo docs too) ... ROGERS owns the phone lines!!!

FARK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeesh. Hate Rogers... I wonder if 3Web still provides cable internet. They'll still use the Rogers lines, but come up with cheaper subscription rates. Be forewarned though, apparently once they have you signed up, you will receive ZERO customer service.

I can't quite post in Current Deals yet, but Rogers is having a promo for guys with the Express internet package. Free upgrade to Extreme for 6 months! Just call customer service and ask for it.

ShortBus
08-09-2008, 10:18 PM
if you do get the "free upgrade" make sure you cancel after because the "free upgrade" will be permanent as well as the price increase (if you don't ask to be dropped back to the express package).

Yeah, make sure to ask when is the last day you can call in to cancel at the end of the 6 months before you get charged on the next billing cycle.

Don't really have anymore info. It's a credit of $10 per month to the internet section as the Extreme package is $10 more than Express. So you are getting technically getting the Extreme program with $10 back each month. Also, there's no contract/commitment period. I'm enjoying the 10m down instead of 7m and the extra 35gig bandwidth limit per month.
