I have the VW one and yes it does use steering wheel controls (thats the reason why I bought it)

It is exactly the same thing except how the actual unit looks on the outside
The VW one is just flashed with Mazda software (again... the same stuff that the Mazda OEM unit is)

For the Mazda OEM unit you found a really good price
They were going for like $700+ :loco
