So the kids are at an age where they love to watch fish.

We have this little play aquarium (actually not sure whether it's a real aquarium (bought from Mastermind or something and had fake sharks...). In any event, knowing the kids, I don't invest too much and buy some "feeder" goldfish (30 cents each or something like that...).

Bought a 10g Topfin filter as that was the smallest I could get. The actual size of the tank is maybe 2g or something.

Well, fish #1 survived 4 days and fish #2 survived a week.

Maybe the filter was too powerful and the fish were swimming too much and died of exhaustion? LOL.

I prefer to think that feeder fish only live a week or so :P, but I doubt that's the case.

Fish people ... chime in. And don't report me to PETA please.

It's been my experience that fish are the worst pets to get. They are such a PITA to keep alive. Get them a dog! :)

Feeder fish are raised to be fed to other fish.

#1- Maybe the "play aquarium" had something to do with it. =P
Longevity and a big tank go hand in hand.

#2- (Ditto marks) 10 g filter for 2 g tank (Ditto marks)
One of the jobs of the filter is to remove ammonia (the waste byproduct of fish) and keep the ammonia at levels that the fish can tolerate - something that is usually done in addition to the role of nitrogen fixing bacteria which can be found in any tank. Most filters do not do this adequately, so as the ammonia levels build up, the fish go downhill.
It's like trapping humans in an airtight box. You can only last so long. Some are able to survive a bit longer than others, but eventually they all die.

Sometimes the stress from just moving them from the petstore to your home gets to them.

Maybe the water wasn't the right temperature.
Wrong temp = wrong pH = trouble.

Were they fed?

Was the water kept clean?

That's all I can think of right now.

I have owned a bunch of fish, and its a labour intensive hobby. In fact I wont buy any more LOL. Some last a day, and some lasted a year from the last batch I bought (tropical fish).

On a side note, the Girlfriend has a $0.25 feeder from 12yrs ago her parents got her at a fair. its HUGE!! Still alive, although it has no name, since her parents said that it would die fast LOL

I bought a pair of blood parrot fish that lived for about 4 years before they choked to death on the food. Accidentally dropped in smaller pellets that was intended for the other smaller fish to eat which they ate and choked to death.

Fish are not really a labour intensive hobby. Well depends on how intensive you would like it to be.

I own a 10 gallon tank with 6 cichlids and a pleco. I clean the tank about once every 2 months. Clean as in remove half the water, sift the poop from the gravel, clean the filters (full cleaning), etc. And the fish are doing great. I just have to make sure that I change the mineral filters once a month and top up the tank with fresh water every week. The filter does the job of keeping the tank clean and the pleco does the job of keeping the algae from growing everywhere.

If you want fish that doesn't require that much cleaning and heating, get some goldfish. Goldfish don't require water heaters.

I laugh when I think of this little experiment. I'll take pictures of the setup.

When the first fish died, I took it out and when the kid asked where it was, I told him he escaped just like in Finding Nemo... He saw the other one sucked next to the inlet and told me that one was dead...

If anyone's getting rid of a small/mid sized tank, lemme know.

We have a small TopFin 10 gallon tank at home and it's not that much work once you get it going. For the first six months or so all of the fish we put in there died. We tested the water and it was fine, so we really don't know what it was. Since then however we put four Jumbo Neon Tetra's in there and they've done perfect. It's now been about two years and one just stopped eating. He was dead a few days later.

Is it just us, or do dead fish not float to the top?

ooh... love Neon Tetra. Really bright colours.

Had a whole bunch of fresh water fish in our 130 gallon tank. Really easy maintenance, since the tank was so large, only had to change the water every summer.

After 6 years, got tired of looking at it. Gave the fishes away to the local pet shop and used the tank as a big storage case. lol.

Damn those freeloading fishes, got free food and a nice place to live. Should have kept live river trouts instead.

It's probably because they don't have enough fur.

I'm pretty sure they had plenty of fur when they died.

How bout just buy those platy/molly at Superpet. They always go on sale like 4 for $10 or something.

My sis has a 2 gallon tank and she bought like 4 before. Before we know it, we had like 8. Then eventually 4 died. Then we had 10 this time. Then a couple died and then more. Well, you pretty much get the cycle.

Bettas are so frickin' boring. We had two side by side for awhile before we gave them away. Wanted to put them together every day I saw 'em just to liven things up...

Leads me to wonder (hey, where is my Who's Ur Daddy World of Wonder thread?...):

Can goldfish reproduce? I recall when I was young, I told the salesperson that I wanted one female and one male goldfish so they could boink each other and I'd get free baby fish... LOL.

During university I had a bowl, a REAL fish bowl that was on my desk. 3 small guppy like fish, they were silver colour.

I would sometimes feed them, rarely change water and they NEVER died.

I think the longest time i got away with it was during a summer where the sun shone on the bowl and it all algae'd up and they stayed alive for over 3 weeks straight without fresh water or food :P

So, one of the goldfish has those buggy eyes... the eyes that stick out of the side of their head (my son called him "Hammerhead"). He is (I mean was) the smallest of the bunch. I forget to feed them dinner one day. The next day, he's swimming around sans eyeballs. Gross.

There's one main reason why I didn't go to med school. Grades. But the other reason was that I am grossed out by these kinda things. In any event, I let him swim around there for a day to build up my courage to take him out. The next thing I know, he's dead. Okay, at least he's less gross (I guess) as a dead fish. Okay, leave him in the tank for a couple of hours. When I finally go pick him out, he's half gone. I presume half-eaten.

I did not know goldfish ate other goldfish.

Unless it's some strange water-based flesh eating bacteria...

Man, you are Dr. Death. Even when one of my fish dies (which is quite rare) it's never been cannibilized by the other fish! I think you may be under feeding your fish.

We have 6 (I mean 5) small goldfish in the 10 gallon tank. I just read that each goldfish should have about 10 gallons of water each. Dammit. Like I'm going to buy a 60 gallon tank for these mofos. I can't even keep up with 10 gallon maintenance.

I should have 'em as sashimi and get it over with...

TheProfessor

10 gallons each? How big are they? From what I've been told, you need one gallon per inch of fish.

I'm assuming all the chlorine has been taken care of from the tank before any fish are added to the water.

When I was a kid, I bugged my mom for fish. She got them, and they kept committing suicide. One particularly tough bugger jumped out of the tank at least 3 times before he finally croaked.

I wonder if he was trying to tell me something.

Get a cat. You don't even have to walk them.

Another one bites the dust. But I really don't think it's directly because of disease... it's the other killer goldfish!

So one of 'em starts to float upside down. Not dead, just floating upside down. A search of the Internet says to feed them green peas of all things. Okay, tried that. Next day, he's right-sided himself again. Yay. Then the next day, he's flipped again. No matter I think to myself: will give him some more green peas at some point. Lo' and behold the next day, he's pretty much keeled over on one side. I look at him closely and he can't swim cuz he's missing his fins! I think the other damn goldfish bit them off!!! He's on his last legs now... :(

Man, those other goldfish are evil.

I've bought a larger filter now. The Petsmart people recommended Aqua Clear over the Top Fin one I bought. I can tell it's a better designed unit for sure. LOL, this little foray into goldfish ownership is costing me an arm and a leg.
