Just wondering... Im getting a 2007 Mazda 3 sedan with the single cd player and steering mounted audio controls. Now im a big mp3 player fan and want to change the stock deck for an single mp3 deck. I know the deck can be changed, but is there a deck out there that will work with the steering mounted controls or will those controls be just for show.

A lot of guys over at M3F have put aftermarket head units while retaining the controls on the wheel..

Just get an Audi/VW Phatbox (10 Gigs!) and flash it with Mazda firmware. You can control it with the steering wheel buttons. Whole setup should cost no more than $200 and you keep you stock head unit.

Search on the M3F boards for more details.

If you find a link post it up. I need to get my steering wheel controls back... Never really bothered me when I lost them... but if its a cheap fix... why not get them back.

PS. When I installed the deck I thought I would go nuts without the wheel controls... it turned out to not be a big deal after a week.

you can order the swi (steering wheel interface) stuff off ebay for around $50USD.

The model differs depending on your deck.

If your deck doesn't support SWI, you can get swi-x which works on all decks with a remote.

There is an add on to some aftermarket decks known as the PAC Module. It can tap in to the existing wiring for steering wheel controls and hook it into your deck.

I have this mod done to my car. See This Thread (http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=16399).
