View Full Version : Are Sentra Spec V that fast?

My friend has a 03 Spec V and he's been bragging a lot to us lately that he's been taking down RSX and Sti's. I don't beleive him at all since the only mods he has on his car is a Magnaflow cat-back and motor mounts.
What do you guys think? I wish the 3 had more power so I can take him down.

rsx yes... sti NO!
the spec V is a pretty good solo car... quite nimble.
he probably THOUGHT he was racing the sti..

I would say... rsx no & sti no. sti's are fast. I love the way they drive!

rsx maybe, definately not an STI...
my buddy has a spec V, and when he went away for 6 months, i had to drive his car once a week aroudn the block.
i was very impressed with the motor...lots of pep, 6 speed transmission too...
lmao, the Spec-V is only slightly faster than the comparible to the Mazda 3, it may take down an RSX (not the type-s) but there is no way in hell it could take down an STi. The Spec-V is pretty much a boy racer stripper like an integra gs-r. Its a good car and he has some bragging rights. His car came standard with Brembo brakes.
Here are some stats for you:
2003 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec-V
ENGINE SIZE: 2.5L
HORSEPOWER: 175 (with an intake and exhuast maybe 200)
TORQUE: 180
WEIGHT: 2708lbs
0-60MPH: 7.0 seconds.
2004 MAZDA 3
ENGINE SIZE: 2.3L
HORSEPOWER: 160 (with an intake and exhuast maybe 200)
TORQUE: 150
WEIGHT: 2826lbs (hatch)
0-60MPH: 7.5 seconds.
So your about a car length behind him, but here are some number's that you'll like if you're a sensible person. (And my argument against my domestic buddies):
Base prices from 'The Auto Channel' (an independent auto information source). The current suggest retail price is taken from the Kelly Blue book value for the 2004 model year Spec-V and 2004 3s in excellent condition with 47,000 miles. All prices are in USD.
NISSAN Spec-V
ORIGINAL BASE PRICE
$17, 199
CURRENT BLUE BOOK SUGGESTED RETAIL VALUE
$13, 805
MAZDA 3S (Sedan)
ORIGINAL BASE PRICE
$16, 895
CURRENT BLUE BOOK SUGGESTED RETAIL VALUE
$15, 655
Your car retains a hell of a lot more value, so in the end, your next car could potentially be more expensive (and possibly better) than his car. Or you'll just have more money in your pocket.
Plus which car would you rather have? I was looking at a spec-v I chose the Mazda.

RSX - Probably
RSX TypeS - NO
STI - Hell NO
Mazda3 - YES
The Spec V is pretty nice and it is quick but not that quick.
He either
- "thought" he ran against TypeS or STI
- TypeS or STI didn't push it hard
- TypeS or STI don't know how to drive
- Your friend is on crack :chuckle
Some specs (obviously specs could vary depending on who runs them but it gives you a rough idea)
STI
0-60: 4.8sec
1/4 mile: 13.6@102mph
2005 RSX Type-S
0-60: 6.2sec
1/4 mile: 14.9@95mph
Spec V
0-60: 7.2sec
1/4 mile: 15.2@92mph
mazda3
0-60: 7.4sec
1/4 mile: 16.0@87mph

Let me guess. Your friend is black and drives a silver Spec V and with painted black stock rims that used to or go to markville secondary school?
If its him....he's bull shitting. I've stepped with him before with my car and his car only beat me by little. RSX and STI? BS to the max. Tell him to beat my friends STI and if he loses then tell him to trash his car.

He fits your exact description Pearly.
I want to see him get owned so bad. He always asks me to go to Old finch with him and race there.
The 3 is only slightly slower eh, but our car is actually down 15hp and more than 20 lbs of torque. Also more than 100 pounds heavier.
With some decent amount of mods you could get your car to his level. Intake, exhaust, headers, pulley's, flywheel that may get you to his level.
You could always just get him to line up against a Mazdaspeed 3 and see the skidmark on his undwear get darker.

I should find a speed 3 and get it to rape him. I don't intend to mod my car too much, got no $$ =(.

Politically correct statement: I wouldn't suggest racing on public streets. Be a man, do the right thing.
Whether it be "slightly" slower or not, the SpecV is a quicker car so I wouldn't run against it expecting to win.
He'll get owned soon enough...either by REAL RSX TypeS', STI's or by the cops.
But sadly there's nothing that can save him from his own twisted imagination. :chuckle

Dragging against another car is pointless and shows no driving skill whatso ever. All it proves is that someone has spent more money on their car.

Well... the conversation as about drag racing so that's the sort of track I was talking about.
While my car is set up to handle, I make no claims to being a great track driver. I'd say that with a few practice laps in, I'd likely still beat him but if he's some sort of autox champion (which it doesn't sound like he is) then it probably wouldn't matter what I was driving. :)

I'm not gonna argue that. :) Maybe his winter tires are better than mine, but it seems to me that my buddy's RSX-S with completely stock suspension can still hold the corners better than my car with all the work I've done. :(
Mine corners far better than a stock Sunfire, but it's still not gonna hold a candle to a properly engineered car. http://www.michelleandkevin.ca/forum/images/smiles/gotme.gif
This isn't about me though. This is about some punk kid thinking a Sentra is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Nothing says humiliation like claiming to beat STi's and then getting your ass handed to you by a Sunfire. http://www.michelleandkevin.ca/forum/images/smiles/rollin.gif

I agree, losing to a Sunfire would be pretty bad. I've never been to Shannoville but do they have a drag strip?
doughboyr6
03-04-2007, 02:17 PM
no they don't....
they have a tiny ass skidpad.
and the actual track. Actual track has a few configurations....Nelson/Pro/Long/Fabi.
I've run on 3 of the 4 before, haven't done Pro before which is basically the outer portion of the track.
Never been with a car. All done on a bike.
Cayuga has a strip.
Mosport doesn't as far as i remember
they have RDT (rider development training) and the big Mosport track. RDT is such a fun track, but just too small and poor condition. But configuration is super fun.
Mosport is super fun, but scary also, the speeds are insane...i've been there in a car (passenger) and been there several times on my bike...T2 is scary as hell and the back straight is ridiculous. T2 is a blind downhill, you basically have to have blindfaith and just peel in. The back straight wasn't too bad in the car, basically because you're inside and it wasn't that fast (an old school porsche). On my bike, theres no luxury of a windshield, having a 250km windblast is scary, and there's a crest at the top so the front wheel lifts. Sitting up to brake at the end is like someone just released a sail, you're literally ripped off the bike.

I'm thinkin' the drag strip at Cayuga (TMP) in the spring might be just what the doctor ordered.
I wonder how many members here would be interested in going? Could be a great outing, especially if a lot of you haven't raced your cars before. It's good fun.

Is Cayuga farther then Shannonville?
Wild Weasel
03-05-2007, 11:29 AM
I think it's a little bit closer.
Again... I'm talking about a drag strip, not a road course. I'd totally be up for a road course meet as well. I just think a drag strip is nice and safe for beginners to get a feel for racing without needing much skill to start out.

Cayuga is closer than shannonville becuase you can take the 407. Roundtrip to cayuga by 407 cost me $26 with a transponder.
I went tracking at shannonville last year with the honda guys, it was a blast. We should definately organize a track day here on tm3 cuase tracking with faster cars (ie, subies) is no fun at all.

I suggest if you have never tracked before to go to shanonnville becuase it is a smaller track with no walls. Cayuga HAS walls. If you wipe out at shanonnville there is nothing but grass --- steer into the grass to avoid flipping and there should be little to no damage to your car. If you wipe out at Cayuga you might end up in a wall and i would hate to think of the damage if that happens.

When you go tracking, don't you need a set of spare tires or you need track tires?
Wild Weasel
03-05-2007, 02:59 PM
Yeah... that's why I suggest the drag strip. Pretty much zero chance of crashing. :)
I agree that if we want to do some lapping, Shannonville is the better choice.
For people who are going to go once or twice a year, you just use your regular tires. If you're getting competitive about it, then you'd want dedicated tires.
Up until now, I've only been to the drag strip with my boat-anchor-weight 18's and all season tires. I'm looking forward to getting out this spring with the worn down summer rubber and lighter 17's I picked up late last year.
Kevin@nextmod
03-05-2007, 03:05 PM
I'm going twice or 3 times this year, it doesn't seem but to purchase $700 tires but my all seasons are done and i like cornering on the streets. I love the feeling goign on corners then driving fast like a *** on the road.

yup, do you ride? the bikes old now though, its a 99. Haven't touched it since 05. Crashed at shannonville, busted my shoulder and haven't ridden since other than to do my M test. It may seem overhelming at first getting started, but its not as bad as i thought, i had a lot of guidance, if you're interested, let me know, i can help you out and i still have a lot of friends in the bike scene. Expensive depends on how into it you want to get...i know ppl who buy trailer homes hauling 8 bike enclosed trailers specifically so they can do 4 trackdays in a row and have lodging. I put a hitch on my car and bought a trailer...those are the two opposite spectrums.
Is Cayuga farther then Shannonville?
nope, depends where you live. From oakville, i drove to Cayuga in about 45 mins, i think i got off the QEW at Centennial? Shannonville is like a 2-2.5 hr drive from oakville.

Seeing as i used to own a spec v (that my brother now drives) i figured i should chime in here on this one.
Stock for stock youd be amazed how close this race would be if both drivers were equal. Yes the spec V feels a lot faster, thats because the gearing is so short. Is it faster then the 2.3L yes, but not by as much as people think. Especially with the kids that are driving those cars, i wouldnt be purprised if a properly driven 3 took a stock one out...Mine was modded so its not a good comparison. As for the rsx and the STI
rsx (base and premium) = drivers race
STi.....umm you cant be serious
type s ...from a dig, the spec wins to 40kph, then the type s puts cars on it..
mazda 3....spec v wins from a roll, dig .....but its not by much as i stated..they need to shift to third to hit 100kph, thats .2 .3 sec if your good..but yeah spec v wins
as for your friend....tell him to go join the vboard.com...theres lots of people like him there..he'll fit right in...

Speaking of bikes.... did anyone see the host of pinks! wipe out on a crotch rocket during an episode that was on around 12:30 last night? He was gonna go to the other end of the track to check out a broken down car and he completely got into a speed wobble and got to see what track tastes like. I think he meant to spin the back tire, but the track was hot and it gripped lol.
