The weather is finally starting to look good.....anyone else itching to put on their summer rims and tires. I generally do it sometime in April, but if in the next week it looks like the weather is going to be consistantly above freezing I might just go ahead and do it.

I'll wait for at least a few weeks before I even think about it, with the weather the way it has been who knows if we are going to get anymore of the white stuff or freezing rain.

I'm with you Prof, I'll be putting my summers on next week and getting an alignment (I got it dropped on the Pro-Kit and am anxious)...I believe we've seen the worst of it this year, ....just a feeling don't kill me on it.But if we do get a little snow or freezing rain one day, I'll just take TTC!

I'm really anxious to put the nice rims back on to see how my car looks dropped. But I'll probably have to wait a while, the weather here in London is just too unpredictable. We randomly get snow squalls.

I'm waiting till I can buy a new set of summers, the BS-A are 90% toasted and i'm not gonna bother puting them on just for a couple months plus I love how my car looks with steelies and swap to summers with temps below 5 degrees is not good.

I am hoping the worst of it is over but man, its still friggin freezing at night.

I don't know if others take this into consideration but generally I'd like to put my summers on when the salt is washed off the streets and when most of the potholes are fixed. Mid April to early May is a good time. :)

the white hatch, possibly middle till or towards the end of April...damn come to think of it, I may have to install them early, wondering if my car could clear the dyno...

now the Winning blue 4-door, a little before april...the car literally sits in the garage 85% of the time...

So thats one set of OEM 17's, hummmm the question is should I sell the other one that goes onto my car, it will be sold cheap wit tires :) (yeah I know hidden for sale post)

Right then! :)

There's no way in hell anyone should be taking their winter tires off in March. We've had snow storms in May before, and we're definitely going to have periods of freezing temperatures leading right up through April.

It doesn't have to be really cold to get lots of snow. Generally, you get more snow up close to 0 degrees than you do when it's down below -5 and what not.

With that in mind, if you're switching from winter tires to all seasons, you can consider it a judgement call any time after mid-April or so. After that, if we get some sort of freak snowstorm, you can simply stay off the roads.

If you're switching from winter to summer tires, I'd wait until we get at least two weeks consistantly over 7 degrees. Remember that summer tires are dangerous in cold weather even when it's sunny and the roads are dry. I wouldn't even consider this change until the beginning of May but hey... if it's nice and warm at the end of April and the forecast is calling for more of the same... then again it's a judgement call. Just be aware of the dangers if it gets cold again.

I'll probably switch to my summers in early May.

How often are you outside looking at your wheels when it is cold out?

Typically, I run from my front door to the car and then from the car to my destination and the reverse on my way home. If that is the case for you changing your steelies to yuor summers might result in 1/2 a minute of seeing your summer rims in a day. Not worth it.

That being said, if you are staring at you car from inside where it is warm, you have issues and you need to invest in an HDTV.

"The World according to Wild Weasel" I was going to leave this alone... ahh but what the hay! Someone really brainwashed you into thinking winters are impossible without snow tires and running tires in -5C? Where do you get this stuff? Oh I know "advertisements" & "tire manufacturer literature" of course they want everyone to have 2 sets of tires for every car...what a concept!!
Give me a break, like I already mentioned in this long drawn-out discussion on winter tires, I've driven many many years on all-seasons with no problems, let me say that again "with no problems".Plus I've been around long enough and seen enough winters that I know anything can happen but according to the long range forecast its going to start warming up so like I said IF we do get a day of snow or freezing rain I'll just park the car, ...theres always the TTC.Maybe more people should park their cars on bad days like that anyways, it'll help the enviroment and maybe, just maybe it'll bring insurance costs down too.

I normally wait until late April however I play it by ear.

If the temps are above +7 for a week or two in a row is a good indication as you don't want the winter rubber to wear too fast.

2nd, if there is no salt deposited for a few weeks and some good showers have washed the road is also a good indication.

If you see the road sweapers out, a sure sign to switch them over.

Each person has their own criteria as to when is the best to switch over. Just keep in mind, the winter tires were for safety and the winter season.

You obviously don't read what I write.

I agree that you can get away with using all seasons in Toronto, so long as you stay off the roads when they're covered in snow. This doesn't even apply if you've got winter rated tires like the TripleTreads.

What I type and what you read are clearly two very different things. Thanks for agreeing with me though, despite your best efforts.

Which bus do I catch to go from Brooklin to Thornhill?

If you cannot choose not to drive, then you also cannot choose not to get winter tires without being irresponsible and totally disrespectful of the other people on the road.

This is no different than going out in the rain with bald tires.

I can't wait to see the snow melt..

Springs, front lip, new summer rims... uggh.

That being said, I must say that even though I am anxious I will be waiting for the first week in April or so.

As for the discussion on winter tires, I felt everyone has voiced their opinion... gotta follow suit.

I have to agree with WW on the whole issue, I was born and raised in Sault Ste Marie and know how to drive in snow. I never had purchased a winter set for my cars before now, but really after driving with both. I can't believe I made it this long.

In fact, just recently they just changed a law from 1971 that prohibited using studded tires (More here (http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/faq/vehicle.htm#studs)) not because the winters have become more mild, or because drivers have become better, but simply due to the number of accidents that happen every year due to icy road conditions.

To each and every person it is a choice.. but for me and my family, I will always be on winter tires in the winter.

In fact, how's this for an idea? I think that insurance companies should reduce a drivers premium if the car they drive is equipped with winter rated tires?

Install springs - end of march

Just a quick question... shouldn't the alignment happen after the summer rims/rubber are put on?

I read just fine, but again there you go with your idea that driving with all seasons on snow is wrong or difficult or whatever.Let me state this again; winters in the GTA can be handled fine with a good quality set of all-seasons combined of course with "proper driving".Simply put, you seem to want to lay blame on the equipment when the obvious problem is lousy drivers.

As for Caz's statement...where the hell is Brooklin? Obviously when I made my statement it was meant within reason, if using transit is not an option then like WW said get snows.
keep this in mind though 2 relatively good snow falls this year in the GTA: 900 accidents, yes thats right 900 accidents in 2 days...How much do you think that cost the insurance companies? and eventually we will all pay for that in our premiums. So isn't it reasonable to state on days like that to stay home or if feasible take transit...not to mention the environment...just think hundreds of thousands of vehicles, cars trucks, buses etc; crawling for hours emmitting all those gases....STUPID!!

Hey its an individual's choice, I for one on really bad days, will take transit, not because of 'my' driving skills, but for the environment and for that moron out there with very little driving skills that will most likely run into me!

Brooklin (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Brooklin+ONTARIO&layer=&ie=UTF8&z=12&om=1&iwloc=addr) Just North of Whitby.

As for the 'taking transit' option... I live in Newmarket, I am sure with 2 transfers and a short work I could get to work 45 late, but I choose to drive and I choose to use winter tires.

If you live within transit and use it, good for you infact I applaud you car pooling and saving the enviroment. To those who can call in to work and say, "I can't come in today because I have Eagle RSAs" I envy you.
But to those who think 'all seasons' mean all Canadian Seasons... Not so.

Lots of good (& somewhat affordable) golfing in and around Brooklin.

FTR - I car pool with someone that doesn't have snow tires and taking some of the back roads is a little sketchy in his car.

Different strokes for different folks.

If you are uber confident in your driving skills then by all means, enjoy the all-seasons on your car!

Unfortunately, majority of the people behind the wheel out there don't really THINK when they drive. Those who do think but have a split-second to perform a complete stop, no matter how good a driver they are, emergency braking will be hindered if on all-seasons and there is snow on the ground or the temperatures are cold enough, ie. below freezing.

It's a good thought on having insurance companies give discounts to the drivers on winter tires but it'd be a helluva lotta work for them to get confirmation the car is fitted with actual winter tires. It's not something I will see happen in this life-time. That or the discount would be so minute it won't attract many of the all-season'ers to even bother spending the additional hundreds to purchase and install winter tires.

Hmmm.... Looks like I missed this one. In my case, I have been riding stock 17's with the RSA's on them all winter.... I have driven on all of the bad snow days we have had. That being said, I was fine.... I grew up in a small town that got its share of snow as well as piss poor snow removal service. I never had a set of winters on any car ever..... I think if you are a good driver who is aware of road conditions etc... your fine in the gta. That being said.... I am probably going to get a set of x-ice's for my stock 17's next winter just because winters are much better and most of all safer to drive on. The 800 dollars spent on a set of 4 far outweigh the cost of my 500 deductable and downtime of my car not to mention peace of mind. The main reason for the winters are my old man has a G35 coupe.... he has a set of four x-ices on that car and to be honest, the car is much much better in snow than my Mazda 3 on the RSA's..... I can only imagine how good my car will be in winter with them. Maybe Im just doing this out of curiority to truly see how well my car is on snows? who knows.... the reasons above along with the fact that I know MY driving is fine..... but I know many around me arent that cautious. The drive to Pmall in the winter is dangerous! lol.... As for summer.... I ordered new rims and tires last month and they should be in April. They will be mounted with Falken all seasons... so they will more than likely be put on when the salt is coming off the roads. Luckily they arent sitting in my place staring at me :D must suck Jeff ;)

I'm likely going to put my summer tires on next weekend the 25th of march if you look 14 day trends it looks good and the fact that next week a spring/summer pattern looks like its going to take hold with the jet stream moving north! also the fact that its going to hit 30C in Dallas this week where some of my family lives... and the reason I’m saying its 30c in Dallas is because every time they hit 30c in the spring we have never got snow after that here in southern Ontario.

Well...I just heard on the radio today (680 news) that in the last 60 or so years in Toronto, only 2 of those years have had April without snow. So the chances of another snow fall (I'm not sure of how much) in April is highly likely.

Yes, RSA's are all season tires. That means they won't be unsafe in freezing conditions like summer tires are.

With that in mind, you could put them on earlier and if the temps drop, you don't need to be concerned.

Just don't drive if we get snow or ice on the roads.

I wouldn't be in a big hurry though. Just run the winters for another month and forget about it. :)

Switched out the tires on our second car this week-end so I'm done for the season. I'm in love with the look of the car again now that the stockers are back on.

OEM rims are sitting in the garage with new low profile rubber..

pearl white hatch will be back in summer mode, second week of April..

yet the WB 4DR is back to summer mode...it mostly lives a majority of its life in the garage...

Good decision... Love the rims and the way they look on your car.

Switching out rims on April 15... the day before my bday... My own little gift to myself :)

I just found out that I may get my car as early as next week. I have to call sometime today to get the details since I just got a voicemail.

If that's the case... I just won't bother putting the summers on the Sunfire until May or so. If we get cold weather, I'll drive the Sunfire. If not, I'll use the 3. :bana

This morning was the iciest of the winter. Every April something like this happens. Glad I kept the winters on. Saw a car spin out. They'll come off in a week or two though when the forecast is consistantly higher.

TheProfessor

I think it looked worse than it was. I had no problems whatsoever getting into work today until it came time to park in my spot. I made the turn and the car kept going straight for a foot or two before actually turning. Thankfully since I get into work first all spots were empty so no harm done. As always, you just have to be smart and take it easy.

Actually I think it melted after I was on the road. I was out REALLY early and it was shear ice - all shiny and slippery. I spun the tires a couple of times on it. But the wife called me a couple of hours later and said it wasn't that bad then.

TheProfessor

Yeah, the snow was definately melting on my way into work at around 7:30am.

saw a 3 car collision that involved the ttc bus.. mid/down-town were slippery as ****.. the higways were ok but in the city it was like an ice rink.. 20-30kph most of the time :( including the highway due to a collision in the OPPOSITE direction.. *sigh*

Yeah, when I left this morning shortly before 7 (not my week to drive so I got to ride shotgun), I think it was actually quite a bit worse than it looked.

It looked like it was just a light dusting of snow, but I'm pretty sure there was ice under that, considering how cars were sliding around.

04-05-2007, 08:53 AM
When I went out to my car last night around 11pm, my car was iced up pretty bad. Roads were quite slippery this morning as well probably because the snow was coming down very wet at first, iced over and then more snow over top.

It will probably melt later this afternoon

I can see Leslie street out of my office window and so far two sets of salt trucks have gone by in the last hour or so. I think the roads for the trip home should be fine.

Something like that. :)

My comment above though referred specifically to summer tires though. I doubt there will be much if any ice and snow left on the roads after this afternoon, but it's still way too cold for summer tires. All seasons should be fine, though they would not have been early this morning!

I just went out for lunch and the roads up here in Richmond Hill are fine. There is no snow or ice at all, and what little there is lying around seems to be melting!

It'll snow pretty hard for like 5 minutes then stop. Start again in half an hour and it continues....

But right now everything looks dry as well
