I saw this on Attack of the Show.
Ever wondered why they don't make CD-ROMs faster than 52X? Cuz they will explode. :chuckle

BTW, Attack of the Show sux compared to Screen Savers but at least Olivia Munn isn't too bad to look at.
Whoa whoa wait....why on earth would it explode, its just faster rpm.

I think it has something to do with imperfections in the CD which makes it unbalanced and problematic at high RPMs.

Dooooooooooooo it!!!!
Then post a YouTube video....hell I'd be impressed!

The centrifugal forces from the high rpm are too much for the material to handle...plus the potential for some imbalance in the weight distribution on the disc cause the problem.

actually that happened to me before when a windows cd exploded in my cd-rom: i actually had tiny pieces flying out of the cdrom, while it still remained closed.

that's Microsoft Windows for ya. kaboom!
another cool way to destroy a CD is throwing it into the Microwave...ding!
There are several videos of it on youtube.

I heard of that happening but I've never seen it. That was cool.
FYI never put labels on your burned cds especially if you have a disc changer because they can get jammed when the label peels off. It happened to my friend ('02 Nissan Frontier) this week and he had to take apart the dash to get to the cd player and remove the disc.

This was done on myth busters
From the Mythbusters:
CD-ROM Shattering (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MythBusters_(season_1)#CD-ROM_Shattering)
It was proven that a high rotation (in excess of 23,000 RPM) could shatter the CDs, but the MythBusters could not achieve this using an average CD-ROM drive (though it was possible that the computer used, a budget model, simply could not keep up with the drive). Physical damage to the CD made shattering more likely. In addition, there was testimony by at least one person (the salesperson who sold the computer) that seemed to verify the myth. The MythBusters concluded that while this event was very unlikely to happen, it was possible.
