Has anyone ever had a paint protector put on their car? From what I hear it is supposed to protect against tree sap, bird crap etc. Not sure if it is the same as claying and waxing (which I could do myself)

Same stuff you can do yourself, but comes with a warranty against fading, peeling, cracking surface rust. etc..
Really depends on the comapny offering it.

I got it done at the dealer. It's just as TheBiz described - it's warranted.
Not sure how effective it is or how long it really lasts but I'm kinda anal about paint quality (as many others here) so I opted for it. I'm sure regular waxing will be equally as good or better.
But when I took off my side moldings after 1 year of owning the car, I did notice a very slight color difference (the paint under the molding was darker than the rest - so the exposed paint did fade)
