well my current computer has become kinda frustrating lately, and its gettin slower for my needs.
i have all the other components (hard drive, burners, ddr ram and so on)
but, the weakest link right now is my motherboard and processor
im currently using the asus a7n8x (not the deluxe version) mobo and a amd anthalon 2400+ processor
as we allll know, its time for dual core, as the socket A chipset is long overdone!!
the motherboard i have now is PERFECT for my needs, and id liek to stick with asus again, as they make good mobo's!
so...any suggestions on mobo, and processor?
just really need onboard sound and lan on teh mobo, thats it really

Your going to have to probably get new ram also has dual core usually uses DDR2 ram. Just match a cpu with a mobo and buy it. Not too hard. I suggest a Core 2 Duo because I use them at work and they are amazing.
I also suggest a Intel mobo with it along with OCZ memory. I also suggest a new Seagate sata drive.
It's all about budget though.
Whats your budget?

given i dont' know the prices on things anymore, ill have to say about
3-400 bones?
don't use the computer for much anymore, just transcoding movies to burn to dvd and dvd burning, thats about it.

intel mobo.. lol.. that is laughable..
ocz memory or corsair.. C2D is more expensive than X2.. as for HD, he already has them.. but WDC would be my choice..
to sue ddr ram you'd have to go 939 socket but that's too old.. so you're looking to add memory to the equation as shreddies83 said..

Hmm you could always donate(or small fee) your DDR memory to me...got some older pc's doin other things :p
Personally I'd go with another Asus or maybe even a Gigabyte MB... and an AMD AM2 CPU (s939...is abandoned completely). Plus AM2 cpu's are now cheaper than s939 ones... if you want an upgrade, its not worth it to buy into a dying format just because of one item... DDR2 memory is faster and will give you more bang for the buck
AMD4200 x2 or higher, prefferably the 65w versions, they give off a lot less heat, but are worse OC's if you're into that.
For memory OCZ is tops for me, if you want 1gb, Canada Computers has a DDR2 6400 Plat DC kit 2x512 for 104.99 after a 10$ rebate and a 2gb kit for 194.99 after 10$ rb.
But without your needs\wants drilled down its hard to be specific...

+1.. good shit plat!
If you're looking for an upgrade for an asus board (I'm a fan of asus board) and want to buy C2D, you're looking over 3 to 400 to spend.
Since you're upgrading, I personally recommend P5N32-E with Nvidia 650 chipset. As for the processor I suggest E6600, this processor at its price, you're getting so much out of it. Depending on if you don't want to SLi, you can go with Asus Commander.
XFX recently made 680 series board, which looks very promising and I don't think they are overpriced like Striker.
I myself have Asus Striker Extreme (Their flag mb atm) and E6700.
If you have more questions, PM me.

We have quad cores at work with Intel mobo's, whats so funny about it??? They work and are super fast. I dunno, I guess I know nothing about computers but I do work on these at work.

Each one of those have 4 dual core xeon mp's and we have about 16 of those boxes so add it up also each one has 16 GB of ram.

we're talking a VALUE box vs an ENTERPRISE system.. each chip in your system is waaay more than he wants to spend on just the mobo and cpu..
you and i BOTH know intel SUCKS at making their own mobos.. he likes asus so he wanted to stick with asus.. *sigh*

i say asus as i have had absolutely zero problems wiht the mobo i have right now thats all, they seem to be quality stuff.
lots of computer talk in here i don't understand anymore, (i would have used to but not anymore)
i appreciate all the info, and ill hit up some sites fo rpricing and see whats what.
as for my needs/wants, i thoguht i already said it.
i only use my computer for the internet, burning stuff, msn, email...transcoding movies (nero recode) and watching movies!
it handles all that right now, but my new dvd burner i got (LG lightscribe) doesn't perform anywhere near where it should. My 2nd burner (ghetto old sony 16x cd burner) will whoop its ass in speed anyday (only comparing burning of cd's)
my old hp dvd burner ihad could burn dvd's faster than this one bla bla and so on.
everythign is updated yadda yadda firmware so on...
as we all know transcoding movies takes a logn time....and they take an even longer time on what i have at the moment.
its not really fesable for me to buy a whole new budget system, as already said i have the following
burners
less than a year old 160gig hdd
power supply (less than a year old)
ram
and all the periferrals (sp?)
i will take all these options listed here in this thread, i greately appreciate it don't get me wrong...itll just take a few days for all the know how i used to have to come back to me to search...

Well...if you want to use all of the below:
+++++++++++++++++++++++
burners
less than a year old 160gig hdd
power supply (less than a year old)
ram
and all the periferrals (sp?)
+++++++++++++++++++++++
You are stuck at s939, now I am not saying ditch the old ram because I want it haha, but because it forces you to stay with a dying line. If you look at CC;s website, you will find that they dont even carry a s939 line of MB's (or any X2 939 cpu's anymore!)
BUT if you still want ya ya... there is a store that I use www.infonec.com that carries several s939 boards. There are 5 ASUS ones to choose from, and 4 ABIT ones as well. I forgot to mention in my b4 post but ABIT is just as good as ASUS or GIGABYTE. There is an ECS board in there, but I would run :). They dont carry any x2 939's either, unless you want to go with the Opteron line, but they are pricey.
SOOO what are we left with here, by sticking with the RAM (and remember you can use everything else that you have, except for the RAM) you are limiting yourself A LOT, and what you save on your RAM, you are going to lose to buying more expensive comparable CPU's because they are so scarce now, and no vendor price reductions are offered anymore (s939 hardware is actually more expensive now than it was before its fallout!), while AM2 hardware is getting cheaper by the day. I mean if you are just a stubborn ol'Neuffie :) and absolutely don't want to part with your RAM then buy the stuff used off of someone that is upgrading.
I say you get an ASUS AM2 Board, with a 4200~ or higher x2 65w CPU and the 1gb OCZ of memory from my first post, the rest you can reuse. Also AMD has promised that they are going to keep the AM2 socket for their new line of Quad CPU's to come, so you are good for near future upgrades (the switch from s939 to AM2, pissed on a lot of ppl that invested into their number crunchers :P)

i agree wholeheartedly with platMS6
another store i like is NCIX.com.. they are out of BC so you don't pay PST but you pay shipping so it's almost the same and on lighter items you save more.
oh also, you forgot to mention VIDEO CARD!!! the current card you have uses an AGP slot.. DOH! so you would have to either get a pci-express card, a motherboard with agp (hard if not impossible to do for the am2 socket, easier for 939) OR probably the best choice, onboard video..
nowto give you a little pricing from canadacomputers here's the pricing
CPU: $140 http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=011233&cid=CPU.907
RAM: $115 http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=011898&cid=RAM.475
VIDEO (if required): $90 for a refurb here http://shopati.ca/product.asp?sku=3130802 or $105 for a silent solution 7600GS http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=009933&cid=999.243.390
MOBO: onboard DVI and RGB!! $105 http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=010295&cid=MB.526

THANKS GUYS!
extra burgers for you...haha
on the ece boards, i rememebr back in teh day when they had the socket A K7 series board *shudders* lol
all this info is awsome, and prices are even more awsome!! that mobo u suggested magic is perfect as ill be eventually be hookin up a lcd tv to it.
with video card its not a necessity, im aportin a e-GeForce FX 5500
and its more than i need.
this is better than i expected!
EDIT: on the vid card thing....are the agp slots still the best place to snap in a card? back a few good years ago it was frowned apon to have a pci vid card?
majic
03-28-2007, 10:48 AM
no no.. !!!
pci < agp < pci-e (pci-express)
most if not all AM2 socket mobos and the core2duo ones come with PCI-e x16 slot for video instead of the ancient dinosaur AGP ;)
M2N-VM comes with ONBOARD video (dvi-d and rgb) PLUS if you want to get a higher end video card down the road you can slap it in the PCI-E slot and disable the onboard video..
http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=101&l3=296&model=1138&modelmenu=1
EDIT: cliff's notes.. yer ol' eh-gee-pee card won't be fittin' in da slot on dis mobo!

lol, so as u can see, this is when i stopped being involved wiht teh computer stuff, when the agp 8x slots were the king /ish back in teh day
hah times sure have changed....

it will.. you have an ATX case and this is uATX (microATX).. the holes will line up.. i think you'll use 6 out of the 9 holes (old mobo) for this mobo

btw the ram has been cut in half so you either save 50% or just go for 2GB as that seems to be the sweet spot today..

Hmm that looks similar to my computer that I bought. I got my parts from CC in June for about $750 I think. How much did yours come out to and which vendor you get it from?
