Whats 3G mean?

Rogers' current network is 2G meaning, GSM and Edge (Edge is sometimes referred as 2.5G) 3G is the next generation of the service, which is HSDPA. What it means to you? High speeds when you're using data services also unlock some cool services like video telephony. But of course you have to pay the premium to use it.

I am getting ready to make the switch to Rogers, currently with Bell (I HATE BELL)....my question is should I just wait until this is released and get a phone with support or will it just be implemented in to the current services. I am lookinga t getting a Sony Ericsson K790 or W810 ...I just dont want to put out the money for a new phone and find out it wont work with the next stuff coming out.

Well, if you want to use new services you need to wait for the phone that'll launched when Rogers officially launch the 3G services. Mind you, you won't have much choices when selecting the phone because not many vendors are ready to release their phones for 3G in April.
If you get K790 or W810, they will still work under their new network because the network is backward compatible. However those devices will not take advantage of HSDPA services, no high speed capabilities.

or better yet, buy a phone that supports 3G from the UK and make sure it's unlocked.. :bana

not sure if it would work here but I guess we'll have to wait and find out.. the UK have some pretty cool phones.. altho, some of them are so big!! to me they're cameras and the phone is just the accessory to the camera.. =P

I guess this is awesome news. I just wish Rogers would use the Treo 700. My 680 is crap.

So only a few more months.

GREAT

If that phone is UMTS or HSDPA ready phone and unlocked it'll work under Rogers' network using Rogers SIM.

Good to know...now that I think about it, it really makes no difference for me, I dont live in the GTA and so won't have access to the high-speed stuff anyways, with the exception of weekly visits down that way.
I looked on the coverage chart on Rogers website and not much is offered out this way, just the standard GSM stuff. And being that the market isn't exaclty huge this way, I dont expect to see it in the near future.

The main reason they're doing this (I imagine) is for complete iPhone compatibility. So many new features to drool over!

iPhone is an Edge phone. It will work under current Rogers network. You just have find an unlocked one and get it over here :)

My mistake, I thought for some reason that the iPhone took advantage of 3G...
