Having such a nice weather yesterday I decided to install the set of cross drilled rotors I just bought, so far they've been working so good, improvement on braking power is very noticeable and obviously the improvement on look. Here are the pics.
Sorry for the dirty car. :D

looks sweet. im almost due for new rotors, mine are starting to get a bit of warp that i can feel when braking from highway speeds. are you still using the same pads from the old rotors?
where did you get those rotors from?

There was nothing wrong with my rotors, I just wanted to upgrade em, I'm still using the OEM pads as my car has only +/- 34000KM, as for the where to get them you can try http://www.eliteparts.com/site/store/dynamicIndex.asp.
They look great, and I'm glad that they 'feel' better. Eventually I'll look into these to.
I couldn't find anything on the site for the 2.3L though :(
How much were those?

They look great. I had 72k on my OEM rotors and had had them machined last spring but now it is about time to have them replaced. Where did you get yours from?

I've always loved cross- drilled or slotted rotors. Makes a huge difference in term of braking and definitely pleasing to the eye :) Just make sure you break them in slowly at first. The last thing you want to do is have them warped :(

I would buy another set for sure. Bought them for my last car... over 14 sets, and no complaints... I would consider the cadium plating also though.

Actually, they don't make much difference at all in terms of braking.
But they do look very cool.

LOL, no Jeff, they are not white, that is the stock caliper color, aluminum I guess, before I didn't like how it looks with all four calipers painted red but now with the rotors I'm gonna paint the rears as well.

looks good....price is decent....im also interested with this, can we set up a group buy ?

Wont work. I spoke to them last season. They said their margin of profit is too low, and that if I could get 5-10 people, I would be able to get $5-10 max off a set of four :(.
Not worth the time, planning, and hassle of a group buy for $5.

Don't cross drilled rotors kill brake pads?
No, they shouldn't. There's a little less surface to make friction, you could likely go through pads a bit quicker than normal, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they kill brake pads.

cc, did you swap the rotors by yourself? if not, which shop did it and how much? tia

I did it my self, Its easy if you are somehow handy with tools, you just need to take the wheels off, remove the caliper from the disc, don't need to disconnect any of the brake lines, don't worry, just remove the 2 bolts located behind the caliper and take the caliper off the rotor, then pull the disc from the vehicle hub, here comes trouble, the rotor might be stickied to the hub due to rust, so you need a rubber/plastic mallet/hammer to loose the rotor from the hub, it'll take you a few minutes but it'll come off, after that its all easy now, apply some DW40 and mount the new rotors in the hub and then the calipers in to the rotors, make sure you don't press the brakes while the calipers are off the rotors, once they are mounted on to the rotors re-attach the bolts and mount the tires, thats all. ;)

When changing the rotors on an RSX, I was quite surprised to find that they actually have a pair of screws holding them to the hub.
No such things on the 3, are there?

Ya, i heard that CD/Slotted both wear pads fast.

Nop, no bolts at all.

Glad to hear it. The screws were annoying since I didn't realize you needed an impact driver to get them loose. Damn near stripped them. :)

well, I don't know how it is in the speed 3, i think it has a slightly different system, but in the 3 there is no bolt holding the rotors to the hub, pretty much just the caliper which is attach to the arm with these two bolts.

sounds easy... i forgot to mention i have to replace the pads too, so with this i dnt wanna take any chances. thanks anyways for the walkthrough..

Once you're in there anyway to change the rotors, changing the pads is a piece of cake.
Since you've never done this before, I'd suggest hooking up with one of the members who has and do it together the first time. The process it easy as pie, but it's nice to have someone to explain the various steps and show you what does what. Give them a case of beer for it, and then you'll be able to do it yourself in the future.

thanks for the suggestion WW thats a good idea, wanna do it ?? hehhe jk...
ive read the HOW TO thread @ Mazda 3 forum courtesy of Soko regarding this, it shows the detailed procedure supplemented with pictures...im just not setup with the tools and i have only the stock jack, dnt wanna buy the stands coz i have too much crap in my garage already....anyways i have lame excuses not to do it :)....and besides i have already hooked with a shop to do the job for me :) ....

I would love to do it, and in the future I'm sure I'll be the guy to go to for this sort of thing, but as it stands I've never done them on the Mazda3 and while they're all pretty much the same, I'd prefer to do it on my own first before volunteering to do it for others.
If you were driving a Cavalier I'd be all over it. :)
I'm sure there are people here who would be more than happy to help you out though.
When my discs are ready to be changed this is where I'm going. The brakes look great Juan! Honestly, with a coating (afterwards) these brakes are a very good price.

oh I know in terms of functionality, the purpose is for it to cool down faster, but I gues just got caught up in the fact of having new brakes... hahahaha.

Actually, cross drilling was never primarily to facilitate cooling. It was to allow gases to escape, though most modern street pads will never produce such gases. :)
Finally found the thread!!!! Thx Cool'!!!
I order these and a set of Hawk HPS pads on friday...hopefully next week these honey's will be on the car :)

for 2 bills can't go wrong.
I think the biggest bitch with drilled roters is the holes rust.

03-26-2008, 04:13 PM
Do the rotors crack between the holes? I'm not a gear head so I not sure of the science of it but I remember hearing from the guys at the 6club that they tend to crack between the holes.
