What a night...to make a long story short: I got rear ended by a drunk driver while I was in a rental car last night, and the driver left the scene before the cops arrived. I have her plate and filed a police report, but apparently I am responsible for the deductible (which is $500 - why should I be held responsible for someone else's stupidity?!) since it's a hit and run. Will my insurance premiums be affected?

Because the driver fled the scene, this constitutes a "hit and run" accident--which falls under your collision coverage. Typically, $500 is the standard deductible. Since you reported it right away, this accident will not count against you and will not affect your premiums.

Follow up with the police because if they do find the driver, then you may not have to pay the deductible. :chuckle

glad you're alright...

Hit & Run like said is under collision, but this will be classified as a Not-at-fault collision. Your deductible will apply in this case unless they can find the other person. But in some cases, you can speak w/ your adjuster and they can see what can be done. I've heard of deductibles waived before in these cases...

I hope you're OK...well, you're posting, so you must be somewhat OK. I hope things turn out well for you.

I'm perfectly fine, but I can see this turning into a huge hassle for me. The police said I might have to go testify in court if they catch her. Drunk drivers suck.

That seriously sucks, but please testify if they ask you to! They'll never be able to prove whether they were drunk or not after the fact, but if you can stick it to them any way possible, it'll be for the good of society.

Whether they were drunk or not, what type of ******* just drives off after hitting someone??

How bad is the damage? Were you able to follow them at all?

I wanted to block her at first, but the 911 dispatcher told me to stay put and leave the car there. The damage isn't as bad as I thought when I heard it hit, but the rear bumper definately needs replacing.
